When I first heard Chau Kwok Yin's song 'Kinugawa', I learned that it is a place in Japan. Taking advantage of a solo trip, I decided to include it in my itinerary. Kinugawa was once a famous hot spring town, but during the economic bubble of the 1990s, the number of visitors to the hot springs sharply decreased, leading to the closure of many hot spring hotels and the abandonment of buildings. Arriving in Kinugawa at night, I could feel its desolation. The streets were empty, the streetlights were dim, and the restaurants had closed early. Only the convenience store near the hot spring hotels was open. If you plan to stay overnight next time, I would recommend choosing a hotel that includes dinner, so you don't have to worry about where to eat. The next morning presented a different scene, with beautiful and bright scenery. Although there were few tourists and many hot spring hotels had fallen into disrepair, the whole place gave me a very special feeling, with a mysterious and decadent beauty. Kinugawa Onsen Station Square Since this is the starting and ending station for the steam locomotive, there is a turntable in the station square. Depending on the time, you can see the train turning up close. I went at night so I couldn't see it, but it was illuminated. The train I rode this time was the SL Daiki Futara 72 bound for Kinugawa Onsen, departing Shimoimaichi Station at 13:30. Because it had snowed the day before, only one round trip was operated that day, but miraculously I was able to ride the steam locomotive. Normally, it runs four round trips a day. The seats on the SL Daiki that I rode were two-seater cross seats like those on the Shinkansen or limited express trains. Kinugawa Onsen, Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. I had been curious about Nikko Purin-tei's Kinugawa branch, so I decided to stop by. It is a cute and retro pudding specialty store from Nikko that evokes the romance of the Taisho period. When I entered the store, there were many delicious-looking puddings lined up. This time, I purchased the most popular Nikko pudding, the second most popular Otome pudding (strawberry), and the third most popular Nikko Classical pudding as souvenirs. The puddings were rich, yet smooth and delicious. They also gave me an ice pack. I visited the store on a weekday after 3pm, but it wasn't crowded and I was able to make my purchase smoothly. It is located inside the Yuing PLAZA commercial facility.
