The golden glow of the Kinkaku-ji Temple comes from actual gold leaves plated on the exterior walls of its upper levels. My heart leapt as I saw it luminesce in glory and grace. Meaning “the golden pavilion,” the Kinkaku-ji Temple came from the year 1397, as originally the villa of the powerful statesman Saionji Kintsune. In this year, the Ashikaga shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu purchased this estate from the Saionji family. The Kinkaku-ji was constructed in the year 1399 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. In accordance with his wish, his son converted it into a Zen temple. This original temple had always been covered in gold leaves. Like so many of Japan’s treasured heritage buildings, Kinkaku-ji Temple suffered from fire destruction. During the Onin War, all of the buildings in the estate were burned down, but Kinkaku-ji was spared. Unfortunately, in 1950, a monk committed arson, resulting in the complete destruction of the Kinkaku-ji Temple, the golden pavilion itself. The current Kinkaku-ji Temple was rebuilt in 1955. To prevent confusion, the Kinkaku-ji Temple has an official name of Rokuon-ji, meaning “deer garden temple.” Needless to say, it acquired the common name of Kinkaku-ji because of its golden pavilion. All of the touring at the Kinkaku-ji Temple are done outdoors. As far as I could remember, there was no entry into the temple itself. I arrived at the time it opened, a little after 9am. Once I entered the garden, I proceeded in a very long queue that took up all of the touring route. Kinkaku-ji was originally the Kitayama Palace, rebuilt by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397. After his death, it was converted into a Zen Buddhist temple according to his wishes and named Rokuon-ji after his posthumous name. Rokuon-ji is commonly known as Kinkaku-ji due to the fame of the Golden Pavilion. The pavilion is three stories high, with the top two stories covered in 200,000 gold leaf pieces, giving it a dazzling appearance! It has been destroyed twice, once by arson committed by a monk, and was rebuilt in 1955. The reflection of the pavilion on the lake is stunning, and the garden design is also worth appreciating. Captivating Architecture The first thing that catches your attention upon arrival is the magnificent structure of the pavilion, which seems to emerge from the water like a golden masterpiece. Its gleam under the sun reflects the perfect balance between man and nature, creating an atmosphere of serenity and contemplation. The combination of gold and wood in its design showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional architecture, offering a unique insight into local history and art. There was a 15-minute wait to enter, and the area was slightly crowded, but I still had a good time there. There is one route that leads around the temple and gardens, and it moves at a decent pace. You will have opportunities to admire the beauty of the area and take plenty of pictures. Once you get to the end, there's an area where you can pay to drink some matcha tea and eat a sweet treat while taking some time to rest. This was a great way to finish our trip to the temple.

The first time I went to Kyoto was during the maple leaf season. The Kinkaku-ji Temple, the Sagano Scenic Railway, and the Kiyomizu-dera Temple surrounded by a sea of red and green leaves left me in awe of Kyoto! Last summer, I went to the Kifune Shrine just to try the flowing noodles. Although the line was too long and I didn't get to eat, I enjoyed water fortune-telling and soaked up plenty of negative ions. This April, I came back to chase the cherry blossoms. Even though they weren't in full bloom, the weather was perfect as I strolled along. I enjoyed the seventy percent bloomed Yoshino cherry trees, a century-old Western-style restaurant, authentic sukiyaki, and more, satisfying both my eyes and taste buds. Indeed, Kyoto is my favorite place, without a doubt!

Kinkakuji/Golden Pavilion) is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto whose top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf. Kinkakuji is an impressive structure built overlooking a large pond, and is the only building left of Yoshimitsu's former retirement complex. It has burned down numerous times throughout its history including twice during the Onin War, a civil war that destroyed much of Kyoto; and once again more recently in 1950 when it was set on fire by a fanatic monk. The present structure was rebuilt in 1955. Getting there and around Kinkakuji can be accessed from Kyoto Station by direct Kyoto City Bus number 205 in about 40 minutes and for 230 yen. Alternatively, it can be faster and more reliable to take the Karasuma Subway Line to Kitaoji Station (15 minutes, 260 yen) and a taxi (10 minutes, about 1300 yen) or bus (10 minutes, 230 yen, bus numbers 204 or 205) from there to Kinkakuji. #kyototrip
