It was built on a hill and there were many turtles in the pond. It was built in 1890. This temple is the largest Mahayana Chinese Buddhist temple in Malaysia and has a long history since the Chinese Emperor of the Manchu period gave the inscriptions and Tripitaka and donations to build this temple. Including the Thai King Rama VI who gave his personal funds to build a 7-storey pagoda and King Rama IX gave a large Buddha statue to this temple. This temple is considered the center of the minds of Buddhists from all over Asia who come to worship and ask for blessings here. The temple is beautiful, shady and peaceful on a hill. You will also see the Penang city view. Transportation: Take bus number 203 or 204 from the bus stop at Komtar building. Or if there are more than 2 people, it is more worthwhile to call Grab. The fare is not expensive.

Penang is one of my favorite city in Malaysia. The food, culture, places, and also friendly people have special place in my heart. I visited the biggest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, Kek Lok Si Temple. It opens from 8:30 to 17:30. I got there by bus from Penang Street in Georgetown. The bus fare is about RM 2. The journey took about 30 – 40 minutes. I got off at Air Itam bus station and take a walk to Kek Lok Si. The temple is up on the hill, but no need to worry as they provided a funicular train services and you can enjoy the beautiful view of Penang Island from up there. There's a magnificent Kwan Im statue at the peak level of the temple and at the second level there's also a pagoda. This temple consists of several part like the hill gateway, the garden pavilion, the main prayer hall, and at the highest of this temple you can see the Kuan Yin Bodhimandala Statue. To go this temple you can ride Rapid Penang Bus 201/203/204 from Komtar Terminal and pay 2 RM. #penang Penang holds special memories because it was one of the few family overseas trip when my late father was still around. During our visit to Penang, we went to Kek Lok Si Temple as my parents love to visit temples. The most eye catching landmark must be the statue of Guan Yin standing at a height of 30.2 m. Kek Lok Si is a nice and impressive temple that is definitely worth a visit. The temple consists of several layers and is very easy to reach with small elevators (paid). There are men who drive back and forth with electric vans. In the high season I wonder if it is worth visiting the temple, we were there outside the main season and it was already a long wait for the elevators. It was a short yet fulfilling trip to Penang! It started with a visit to the Traditional Kopitiam - Joo Leong cafe where they serve eggs in cute green little cups and toasts with margarine. It was crowded early in the morning so pay a visit there early. Next, we went to the famous tourist spot, Kek Lok Si temple where they housed a huge Guanyin statue. It’s fun to walk around and feel the peacefulness. Do try out the short cable car trip to the second or third station of the temple to reach the Guanyin statue. The popular Ayer Itam Asam laksa is just a stone away from the base of the temple. The service was fast and the soup was flavourful. Not to forget the famous Penang Road chendol that everyone has to try! It has a super rich taste of coconut sugar with coconut milk topped with green smooth jelly ! Perfect choice as a dessert under the hot sun! Do check out the Sunday market - Hin Bus Depot if you happened to visit Penang on weekend. It’s the latest hipster spot where various art and craft creators gather and show their work. Live band performance is pretty cool too. Tortoise pond is one of the main attraction in Kek Lok Si Temple. It is the first part of the temple - the liberation pond, traditionally people liberate animals to gain merit. There are hundreds of tortoise in the pond and are of several species, including the red-eared slider turtles, the Chinese pond tortoises and the Golden Coin turtles. Visitors can buy water convolvulus from vendor nearby to feed to tortoise. But I feel pitty to the tortoise. I want them to let go. I think the space is too small for them. With millions of images of Buddha and hundreds of beautiful cravings, sculptures and murals in the complex, Kek Lok Si Temple is not just a religious site but also an unique heritage treasure. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas with 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, and the bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy. In 1930, the seven-storey main pagoda of the temple, the "Ban Po Thar" (萬佛塔, "Pagoda of the Ten Thousand Buddhas"), a 30-metre-high (98 ft) structure, was completed. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown (spiral dome); reflecting the temple's amalgam of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism. It represents syncretism of the ethnic and religious diversity in the country. King Rama VI of Thailand laid the foundation for the pagoda, so it is also named "Rama Pagoda". In 2002, a 30.2-metre (99 ft) bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy, was completed and opened to the public. The statue is complemented with a 60.9 metres (200 ft) three-tiered roof pavilion (with 16 columns made of bronze supporting the pavilion), which was completed in 2009.
