Yilan: Mountains, Sea, Hot Springs, and Art
Just an hour by bus from Taipei City Hall to the retro hot spring town of Jiaoxi Hot Springs! While trains are available, taking the bus is recommended as it stops at Jiaoxi Hot Springs Park. You can enjoy a stroll through the park, which features forest baths and foot baths, before heading to the train station. The area retains traces of the Japanese colonial era, resembling Hakone with its array of hot spring hotels. Whether you choose to stay overnight or opt for a day trip, both are great options.
On the way to the station, you'll find a delightful coffee shop serving delicious brews.
Once you reach the station, hop on the local train for a few stops to Yilan Station, where a giraffe statue will greet you with a smile! In town, you can explore art installations while enjoying shopping for famous baked goods, tofu pudding, and local snacks.
If the weather is pleasant, the nearby sea is worth a visit, and the Luodong Night Market, known for its delicious Sanxing green onions, is also a must-see.
In recent years, the renowned whiskey distillery has become a popular attraction, accessible by bus or taxi (reservation required).
