On an autumn morning, as the sky begins to brighten, one enters the temple through the Niōmon Gate, stepping onto white sand and stone steps. Probably the most underrated temple in Kyoto by far! I mean there’s a reason it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not as popular as most other temples in the area which is great! No queues or crowds. You will get your money’s worth. Be sure to go inside all the temples if you can. Photography is prohibited inside the temples but it is definitely something to behold! We were lucky enough to be able to visit the temple during one of their special night viewings. There’s something special about seeing the statues inside the temples light up while still being surrounded by the darkness of night. The temple garden was also quite beautiful to walk around, especially at night.

Perfectly positioned along your city walking route, Yasaka Shrine sits at one of Kyoto’s most vibrant intersections. While it draws crowds throughout the day, the shrine truly comes alive after dark when the lanterns glow against the night sky. The evening illumination transforms the shrine into a magical sight, offering a more serene atmosphere compared to the daytime bustle. It’s well worth timing your visit for sunset to witness this beautiful transition. Whether you stop by briefly during a stroll or make it a dedicated evening visit, Yasaka Shrine makes for an unforgettable Kyoto experience at any hour.

For me personally this was one of the best temple in Kyoto. The grounds are vast and aesthetically done. The water body, water lilies and the trees surrounding it took my breath away. There was a special exhibition of sliding screen exhibition by Mr Morihiro Hosokawa which was stunning. The zen garden of 15 mysteriously arranged stones was very calming. They also house a pure veg restaurant in the temple premises which is an experience not to be missed. There were many signs for accessibility

A magical and serene place that feels like stepping into another world. The towering bamboo stalks swaying gently in the breeze create a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a morning walk. It can get crowded later in the day, so visiting early is best. The surrounding area, with temples and the river, makes it a beautiful spot to explore. A must-see in Kyoto!

This facility reopened in 2018 as the "SagaArashiyama Bunkakan." The highlight is its focus on "Hyakunin Isshu." Originating in the Kamakura period, Fujiwara no Teika, who lived in Kokurayama, is said to have carefully selected 100 representative works from approximately 600 years of waka poetry and arranged them chronologically to create this classic collection. About an 8-minute walk from Arashiyama Station, it's located in front of the Katsura River boathouse and the boat dock, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle. The second floor houses a tatami gallery, requiring admission and shoe removal. The river views are stunning. The first floor houses a café, and the terrace seating is a popular spot for dining while appreciating the beauty of the rock garden and Kokurayama.

✓ Daikaku-ji Temple Located in Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, Daikaku-ji Temple was originally built as an imperial villa for Emperor Saga. In 876 AD, it was converted into a Shingon Buddhist temple. Since several of its abbots were members of the imperial family, Daikaku-ji Temple is regarded as an imperial residence and is also known as Saga Imperial Palace. Next to the temple lies a lakeside garden featuring Osawa Pond, which is designed in the Chinese-style "pond boating" architecture, modeled after China's Dongting Lake. It is considered the oldest man-made pond in Japan. Access: From JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, it is approximately a 15-minute walk to Daikaku-ji Temple.

This place is absolutely not to be missed and is open 24 hours. Every step takes you deep into nature, enjoying the magnificent scenery of Kyoto. The bright red gates create a striking contrast with the surrounding greenery, leaving one in awe. The hike to the top is definitely worth it! It's a magical and timeless place. #7月好去地方2025 ✓ Daiwa Roynet Hotel Kyoto Shijo Karasuma ダイワロイネットホテル Kyoto Shijo Karasuma Located next to Exit 5 of Kyoto Subway Shijo Station, on a busy commercial avenue, the location is very convenient and the living functions are good. There are 7-11 and Lawson next to it, and Matsuya opposite, so it is not a problem to eat or buy things in the middle of the night. Perhaps because it is located in the commercial district, the lobby decoration of this Daiwa Roynet in Shijo is stylish and looks quite high-end, but the interior decoration of the room is similar, simple and neat, clean and bright, maintaining the consistent style of the chain brand business hotel. Stay in a 23-square-meter twin room. The room price for two people per night on weekdays does not include breakfast. ¥13,000 yen, about NT$2,600, is very cost-effective for this location and is highly recommended.

✓ Daiwa Roynet Hotel PREMIER Kyoto Station Front Daiwa Roynet's Premier business hotel at Kyoto Station Front is located just behind the Skytree and only a 10-minute walk from the Kyoto Station entrance. Its location is highly convenient, with numerous restaurants and shops nearby, making it an excellent choice for travelers. Daiwa Roynet has three hotels around Kyoto Station: one at the station front and two at the rear. As a chain brand, the design and decor are consistent—simple, bright, with self-service amenities and ample charging facilities, meeting all the essential needs of a business hotel. The rooms are also slightly more spacious compared to other hotels. The standard double room costs ¥16,000 per night, approximately NT$3,200. Being a Premier-level hotel, the price is relatively higher, but considering its prime location, it's worth it.

✓ Kyoto Terrace Hachijo East Exit Daiwa Roynet Hotel Daiwa Roynet Hotel has two locations near Kyoto Station's Hachijo Exit. One is the Premier near the East Exit, and the other is situated between Kyoto Station and Kujo Subway Station. In terms of accessibility, the Premier is slightly closer and only marginally more expensive. We stayed in a Superior Twin Room, which costs around ¥12,000 (approximately NT$2,400) per night for two people on weekdays, excluding breakfast. The room is about 24 square meters in size and features Daiwa Roynet's signature simple and bright design. For a business hotel, the value for money is quite good.

Located about a 15-minute walk from JR Kyoto Station. This month marks the grand opening of Sushi Ichi, and I couldn't wait to try it out. After dining here, I can confidently say that this meal alone is worth a special trip to Kyoto. The omakase dishes are imbued with a sense of ceremony and seasonal flair, and every single item reflects the chef's sincerity and meticulous effort. From sushi, seafood, tempura, to wagyu beef, every dish is exquisitely prepared and delicious. I enjoyed five types of sushi, with the sea urchin and salmon roe being incredibly fresh. The tempura had a light, crispy, and sweet coating, while the vegetables inside retained their moisture—fried eggplant and corn were particularly delightful. The potato dish with eel in the middle was astonishingly good, with a silky and delicate texture complemented by the sauce. Each bite felt like a celebration of life. The dessert exceeded my expectations, featuring a fruit platter with green grapes, cantaloupe, and peaches that were fresh and sweet. The two master chefs not only crafted exquisite dishes but also provided friendly service. They even offer their own cooking classes, which can be booked for an interactive experience. Kiyomizu-dera Temple, founded during the Nara period, traces its origins back to 778 when the monk Enchin (originally named Kenshin) received a divine revelation in a dream. Following the vision, he journeyed to Otowa Mountain in search of a sacred spring, where he encountered the ascetic Gyoei. Gyoei gifted him a sacred piece of wood, which Enchin carved into a statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. He then built a humble hermitage to enshrine the statue and protect the area. Enchin became the temple's founding priest, and over time, Kiyomizu-dera evolved into a significant temple of the Kita Hosso sect of Buddhism. In 1994, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto." On a summer morning before dawn, the air is crisp, and a delicate mist drapes the mountains like a veil. As the two of us ascended the stone steps leading to the temple, each step felt deliberate and mindful, accompanied by a sense of peace. The atmosphere was tranquil, with few visitors around. A gentle breeze carried the occasional symphony of birdsong and insect chirps, blending into the natural harmony of the surroundings. Our pilgrimage to the Thousand-Armed Kannon began at the temple's Nio-mon Gate. The first sight to greet us was the towering three-story pagoda, its vivid vermilion structure harmonizing with the natural environment. This majestic gateway seemed to invite us into a realm of spiritual vitality. Following the path, we passed through the Rokuro-do Hall and the West Gate before arriving at the iconic "Kiyomizu Stage." This platform, supported by 139 wooden pillars standing 13 meters tall, is constructed using traditional Japanese joinery techniques without nails, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of Japanese wooden architecture. Suspended in mid-air, the Kiyomizu Stage seems to float amidst the clouds, drawing countless devotees and visitors eager to witness its ethereal beauty and enjoy panoramic views of Kyoto's ever-changing seasonal landscapes. Standing on the platform, the morning light bathed the eaves of the Main Hall, blending the surrounding environment with a sense of Zen tranquility. The space offers an ideal setting for spiritual healing. Inside the Main Hall, the solemn atmosphere invites visitors to kneel, clasp their hands in prayer, and sincerely make their wishes, feeling the compassionate presence of the Thousand-Armed Kannon. This pilgrimage was not merely an act of worship but a profound spiritual journey that brought us closer to our true selves.

This state of mind is revered yet unassuming, imbued with a calm and solemn aura. The main hall within the temple is solemn and majestic, its aura calm and unassuming. Tofukuji Temple was founded in the Kamakura period. It was built by the regent Kujo Michiie (completed in 1255 after 19 years) and invited the eminent monk Enni (Shengyi Guoshi) to serve as the founding abbot. Enni was a disciple of the Yangqi School of Linji Sect in the Southern Song Dynasty capital (Lin'an). He laid the foundation of Linji Zen in Japan for Tofukuji Temple and also promoted the deep integration of Chinese and Japanese Buddhist culture, the practice of "Kanhua Zen" and Koan Chan. I walked slowly into Tofukuji Temple. The afternoon sun fell on the stone slabs in front of the Buddha Hall and the Dharma Hall, reflecting the leisurely and clear atmosphere of summer. On the shore of Siyuan Lake, the breeze brushed past my ears, and the shadows of the trees danced. There was less passionate propaganda of autumn maples, and more green and quiet. I stood alone in front of the 22-meter-high gate of Japan's oldest Zen temple, "The Unkaku", looking up at the clear blue sky. A few white clouds floated by leisurely, as if I could also sense the breath of this ancient temple. Time flows slowly here, nature and Zen blend together, and the air is filled with a silent comfort, so many visitors choose to sit and meditate in Tofukuji, allowing themselves to temporarily escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and return to the purest state of freedom. The main hall of Tofukuji Temple, "Hondo" and "Hojo", are the core spaces for Zen practice. The uniqueness of the Hojo garden is that it breaks the natural shape of traditional dry landscapes and uses abstract geometric shapes (such as straight lines, squares, and circles) to express Zen; the stone group and moss interweave an abstract natural landscape, creating a strong visual tension and spatial depth, and then showing the modern Zen aesthetics of the Showa era. The architectural style in this temple combines the rigor of Chinese Song Dynasty Zen and the simple aesthetics of Japan, showing cross-cultural communication and evolution, and the Zen tranquility is no longer an abstract concept.
