[2025 Matsumoto Attraction] Travel Guide for Kappa-bashi Bridge (Updated Apr)

#MarchGoodPlaces2025 Kamikochi is located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the most beautiful mountain scenic spots in Japan. It is about 1,500 meters above sea level and is part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park. There is a Kappa Bridge in this area which is one of the famous attractions in Kamikochi. The bridge is named after the Japanese mythological creature "Kappa". The river under the bridge is the Azusa River. There is a gravel trail on each side, which is a good choice for many tourists and Japanese people to hike. The river trail has towering trees, beautiful scenery, and fresh air, so you won't feel tired walking on it. In addition, you can hear the sound of bells everywhere. It is said that there are bears in the mountains and forests. For safety, when bears hear the sound of human bells, they will avoid them, just like what we call alerting the snake. No wonder there are bells of various shapes for sale in the art shops near Kappa Bridge. It takes about three or four hours to walk to the trailhead. The tour group did not have so much time to allow tourists to hike here, so we spent about an hour enjoying the scenery along the Azusa River.

Early in the morning, we set off from Matsumoto and took the bus to Kamikochi. The scenery along the way is picturesque, with mountains and rivers intertwining, making people feel happy. After arriving at Kamikochi, the first thing that catches our eyes is the majestic Mount Hotaka. The towering peaks look particularly spectacular against the blue sky. We chose to hike along the trail along the river, admiring the clear Azusa River along the way. The water is like a mirror, reflecting the surrounding mountain scenery. As we walked, we came to the famous Kappa Bridge. This ancient wooden bridge is the best place to take pictures of the beautiful scenery of Kamikochi. After dinner, we continued exploring and headed to Taisho Pond, where the water shines like sapphire and the surrounding red leaves are reflected in the water, making it feel like a fairyland on earth. You can feel the charm of nature in every corner of Kamikochi. Whether it is the magnificent mountain scenery or the quiet lake, I am deeply intoxicated. This trip to Kamikochi not only allowed me to appreciate the beautiful scenery, but also made me feel the power and tranquility of nature.

Kappa Bridge is a suspension bridge over the Azusa River in the center of Kamikochi, not far from the bus terminal. Several hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops can be found around the bridge.The structure of the bridge is wooden and it has become a distinctive symbol of Kamikochi. My walking route for the day was Kamikochi Bus Terminal → Kappa Bridge → Taisho Pond → Kappa Bridge → Myojin Pond → Kappa Bridge → Kamikochi Bus Terminal. At this time, the night buses from Shinjuku and the buses from Nagoya and Nagano are all suspended. Even the first direct bus from Matsumoto is full. I signed up for a one-day tour to Kamikochi online. Early in the morning, I took the Shinkansen from Kyoto to Nagoya Station, where I met up with the small tour group. Kamikochi is one of Japan's most beautiful mountain scenic spots. As soon as you enter the highlands, you feel surrounded by the majestic beauty of the towering mountains. Upon arrival, we headed straight to the iconic Kappa Bridge of Kamikochi. From the bridge, you can gaze at the Hotaka Mountain Range and the Yakezawa Valley between the peaks. The clear stream under the bridge is so inviting that it makes you want to jump in and play in the water. After checking in at Kappa Bridge, we set off for Myojin Pond. The trail on the right bank was closed, so we had to take the left bank trail. The scenery along the way was stunning, often referred to as Japan's Jiuzhaigou, with lakes, clear streams, forests, and high mountains, all breathtakingly beautiful. For me, the greatest charm of Kamikochi lies in the joy of hiking in the magnificent and grand nature while getting a close-up view of the Hida Mountains (also known as the Japanese Alps) towering over 3,000 meters. Due to time constraints, we didn't make it to Taisho Pond this time, which was a small regret.

I've seen photos of Kappa Bridge in various places! I've always wanted to go there, and finally I was able to visit this time!! I've seen many photos of Kamikochi and thought they were edited, but when I saw it in person, I was shocked! It was so beautiful!!! It was like I was in a different country. I definitely recommend this place to nature lovers. [Tourist points]--- ○ If you go, you must stay overnight in Kamikochi → Hiking in Kamikochi is the best thing, but the morning when there are not many people is definitely recommended. Also, the hike will be aimed at Taisho Pond or Myojin Pond near Kappa Bridge. Both take more than an hour round trip, so if you're going for a day trip, you can either get off the bus at Taisho Pond and walk to Kappa Bridge, or go from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond and come back. Kamikochi has restrictions on private cars, and it takes quite a long time to get there, so I recommend staying overnight and taking a leisurely hike starting early the next morning! ○ Wear hiking boots → If you are going hiking, even if you are not going to hike, it is a good idea to have them. There were some places where the footing was rougher and more slippery than expected, and many places were wet with dew from the grass. ○ Insect repellent and long pants are essential → The hiking path is basically paved, but in places with lots of grass your feet will sting and you will get bitten by mosquitoes a lot. [Caution] -------- ○ You cannot drive to Kamikochi → To protect the environment, you will need to park your car in a nearby parking lot and take a bus. So dress as lightly as possible. This time I stayed at the Konashidaira campsite, so in addition to the bare minimum of a tent and sleeping bag, I brought a tarp and plenty of drinks and food, and I regretted it because it was too heavy. At Konashidaira Campsite, they rent out tarps and sell a lot of food, and the food and drinks were about the same price as buying them at a supermarket. To reach Tashiro Wetland, it is recommended to take a bus and get off at the Kamikochi Bus Terminal as a starting point for hiking. Along the way, you will pass by Kappa Bridge, and it takes about 20 minutes to arrive!
