[2025 Shimoda Stay] Travel Guide for Kanaya Ryokan (Updated Jun)

Let us introduce 'Kanaya Ryokan,' a famous inn in Izu Shimoda known for its 'Sen-nin Buro' (Thousand-person Bath) at Kawauchi Onsen!! 
This charming and nostalgic inn is truly wonderful🤍
This time, we stayed in the main building✨
All the rooms in the main building are built in the traditional Sukiya-zukuri style✨ 
The rooms are located past the front desk and the large communal bath, further inside the inn. The layout is like a maze, with stairs to climb up and down, making it feel like an exciting exploration🩶 
The room even had a retro black telephone, adding to its nostalgic charm🤍 
Of course, the baths were absolutely amazing🤍
I tried the 'Sen-nin Buro,' but personally found it quite crowded. Next time, I’d like to visit during a quieter weekday🥺 ✼••┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈••✼

Introducing the tips for enjoying the famous mixed-gender "Sen-nin Buro" at Kanaya Ryokan!! Taking on the challenge of the mixed-gender bath requires quite a bit of courage 🤣. The population density is higher than expected, and near the entrance, many gentlemen are waiting... 🫢 Here are some tips and precautions for entering the Sen-nin Buro. Feel free to use them as a reference 🤍 ✼••┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈••✼••┈┈┈••✼ ➸ Tips ☑︎ Towels are allowed!! ☑︎ Bathing clothes are allowed!! ☑︎ Swimsuits are not allowed. ☑︎ It's honestly tough for women to enter alone 😭. Having a male companion is reassuring. ☑︎ Ask your male companion to meet you at the door connecting to the women's bath. ☑︎ The recommended time for the mixed-gender bath is after 10 PM. The bath is open 24 hours, so late-night or early-morning baths are also great options. ☑︎ Be prepared for "wani-san" (men) waiting at the entrance 🙃. ☑︎ The women's bath is spacious enough, so if mixed-gender bathing feels too challenging, enjoy the "Manyo no Yu" (women's bath) instead. ※ The photo is of the women's bath. ☑︎ Guests can borrow as many towels as they need, so you can visit the bath multiple times. ☑︎ The front desk closes at 9 PM, so it's better to borrow towels in advance. The women's large bath is very spacious, and depending on the time, it can feel like a private bath. I think the women's bath alone is sufficient 🫧. Of course, the vastness of the mixed-gender bath is appealing, so it would be great if it were made a bit more accessible for women. 📍Kanaya Ryokan During a 2-day, 1-night trip to Shimoda, I visited Kanaya Ryokan to take a day trip to the hot springs♨️ The day trip hot springs are open from 9:00am to 9:00pm. I visited around 11:00am. The day trip hot springs' opening hours vary depending on the day, so I recommend calling to check before visiting🙆 It was a traditional wooden bath, and it was a wonderful hot spring where you could feel the warmth of the wood🧖 There was a tatami rest room, so I was able to relax after the bath♨️ It was a very comfortable place, so I would like to use it as a lodging the next time I visit🫶
