The one and only art hotel, Shiraiya Hotel
I went to the one and only art hotel "Shiraiya Hotel / SHIROIYA HOTEL" ✨
Shiraiya Ryokan was founded in Maebashi, Gunma during the Edo period and was loved by many famous people. It had a history of about 300 years, but closed down in 2008.
And in 2020, "Shiraiya Hotel" was reborn under the design of Sou Fujimoto. I'm happy to finally be able to go to this hotel that I've been wanting to go to ever since it opened.
When I arrived, I was surprised to see that the Heritage Tower, which is eye-catching from the outside, is also a work of art (Pic.7).
When I entered the building, I felt like I had wandered into a museum, with all the art works inside.
And above all, there was an atrium that went up to the 4th floor. Leandro Erlich's Lightning Pipes were installed as if they were threading through the stairs, which was fantastic. It was also impressive that I could experience the art works just by going up and down the stairs...
At night, it was illuminated in various colors, which was also fantastic.
Each room had a different work of art on display, and I stayed in a room designed by Sou Fujimoto, which I had always wanted to stay in.

Gunma Maebashi City Roadside Station - Food, Fun, and Hot Springs at their Best!!
Maebashi Akagi Roadside Station in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, opened on March 21, 2023♪
It is a large roadside station with hot springs♨, a dog run, a fluffy dome, and more that the whole family can enjoy✨
Various events are held, and even though it was a weekday, there was a cute monkey show♪
It seems that there will also be an illumination event from December 9th to February next year.
I happened to stop by this roadside station during my trip, but it was full of other facilities that I had expected, and I spent the whole day relaxing~♡
The baked manju with red bean paste was very delicious, and I want to eat it again~♪

A specialty bakery where artisans bake bread in the hotel's ovens every day
This bakery doesn't compromise just because it's inside a hotel, and bakers make their bread in the oven every day.
Of course, there are many people who go here to buy bread, as well as guests staying at the hotel. 😚⭐️
Both the exterior and interior of this bakery are stylish, and the bread is of course delicious. 🙏

It was so delicious that I wanted to go there every month...!
Beautiful and delicious food made with plenty of local specialties from Gunma, where the hotel is located, and luxurious alcohol pairings including red wine, white wine, sake, and even shochu! It was always delicious...Next time I'd like to try the 7,000 yen lunch course🤣💓💓

Autumn leaves at Kakumanbuchi Falls
Mount Akagi is home to a variety of natural wonders, but the most spectacular of these is Kakumanbuchi. The beautiful marshland, also known as Little Oze, has a promenade where you can take a stroll. Although it is not as grand as Onuma and Konuma, the scenery is just as complete.

Autumn leaves in the mountains of Mount Akagi
Mount Akagi is one of the famous peaks in northern Kanto. Although Mount Akagi is a general term for multiple mountains, let me just write Mount Akagi here. The path from the base to the ridgeline is easy to walk on. It's a long climb, but the autumn leaves along the way are soothing. When you reach the ridgeline, you'll feel a great sense of openness.

Akagi Shrine (Sanyasawacho, Maebashi City)
There are three Akagi Shrines in Gunma Prefecture alone, with Mount Akagi as the object of worship, and this one is located at the foot of Mount Akagi. The date of its founding is unknown, but it is known to have been here since ancient times. It is a little dark, perhaps because it is located in a cedar forest, but this creates a solemn atmosphere.

Autumn leaves on Mount Akagi (Mt. Komagatake)
Mount Akagi is one of the three mountains of Jomo, along with Mount Haruna and Mount Myogi. Like Mount Haruna, it is a collective name for multiple mountains. It is a famous peak chosen as one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan, and there is a variety of rich natural scenery within the mountain, including Lake Onuma. This is a photo of Mount Komagatake, which is part of that range.

[Gunma] Hotels recommended for art lovers
📍Shiraiya Hotel (Maebashi, Gunma)
"It was like an art museum for two."
Shiraiya Hotel in Maebashi, Gunma, is a complex hotel of art and greenery that was renovated from a former long-established inn.
From the moment you check in, you feel like you're being transported to a different world...🕊️
Works by Yayoi Kusama and Jean Prouvé are casually placed throughout the hotel,
which is sure to be irresistible for couples who love visiting art museums🤍
The rooms are simple but comfortable, and the greenery and art outside reflected through the windows was absolutely beautiful~✨
Recharge your energy with a breakfast of local ingredients in the morning, and enjoy a seasonal dessert at the hotel cafe for lunch.
We also recommend a course dinner in the dining area in the evening. The casual yet elegant atmosphere was just too wonderful! It was a hotel that was perfect for a trip where the couple could chat leisurely, read, and not pack their schedules in. 🌿
👼It's a cultural hub in Gunma, and a stay that will help develop the sensibilities of adult couples.

A symbol of Mount Akagi where you can enjoy nature and activities throughout the seasons
#0yentravel
"Mt. Akagi Onuma," located in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, is a caldera lake at an altitude of about 1,340 meters, and is a tourist spot representing the summit area of Mt. Akagi. Surrounded by virgin forest, the lakeside has a 4-kilometer promenade that can be completed in about an hour, making it ideal for hiking and nature walks.
From spring to autumn, you can enjoy outdoor activities such as renting boats, canoeing, and camping. In particular, in summer, it is about 10 degrees cooler on average than the city, making it a popular summer resort.

A "wetland in the sky" that stands on the summit of Mount Akagi and is woven with nature throughout the seasons
#0 yen trip
Located at an altitude of 1,360m on Mount Akagi in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, Kakumanbuchi is a small marshland with a circumference of about 800m, and is also known as "Ko-Oze" for its beauty. A boardwalk has been established and it can be completed in about 30 to 40 minutes, making it a popular spot for beginner hikers and families.
In spring, Asian skunk cabbage and Renge azaleas bloom in full bloom, in summer the marshland is enveloped in cool greenery, and in autumn the grass leaves color the marshland. In winter, the snowscape spreads, and you can enjoy the scenery of each season. The early morning fog is particularly fantastic, making it a popular spot for photography enthusiasts.

Shikishima Park, Gunma
#cherryblossom25
Shikishima Park in Maebashi is the kind of place you go to feel like part of the community. It’s huge and sprawling, with big open lawns lined by over 1,000 cherry trees. I visited on a sunny afternoon, and it was alive with energy — families with picnics, kids flying kites, and couples on bikes weaving through pink-lined paths. I set up my camera by the small lake at the center of the park and caught a beautiful shot of the blossoms reflecting in the water. It had such a warm, homey vibe — very different from the more “Instagram-famous” spots. If you want to really feel the season the way locals do, this is it. I got some lovely interactions with people who were curious about #cherryblossom25 and ended up sharing mochi and stories under the trees. It's the kind of day that stays with you.

Maebashi Park, Gunma
#cherryblossom25
Maebashi Park was such a cozy hanami experience. It’s not a huge park, but the layout makes it feel intimate and really accessible — winding paths, a river running through, and tons of sakura trees creating perfect little nooks for sitting and relaxing. I came on a weekday and joined some office workers on lunch break just soaking up the sun and petals. There’s a cute little bridge in the middle that gives great symmetry shots — I took a self-timer shot there for my #cherryblossom25 gallery and it felt like a postcard. The park is close to Maebashi Station, so it’s easy to pop in if you’re traveling through Gunma. It may not have the fame of the mega spots, but it had heart. Peaceful, charming, and totally local.

Akagi Senbonzakura, Gunma
#cherryblossom25
“Senbonzakura” means “a thousand cherry trees,” and Akagi Senbonzakura lives up to the name. This Gunma gem has two distinct vibes — a forested cherry blossom tunnel that feels like you’re walking through a sakura cathedral, and a massive field of bright yellow rapeseed flowers stretching out beside it. The contrast is unreal. I came early in the morning and had the place nearly to myself — mist rising off the fields, blossoms just starting to open in soft light. It’s the kind of place where you don’t need music or apps, just take slow steps and breathe it in. I ended up staying for a mini food festival they were holding, tried miso skewers and sakura mochi while sitting under the trees. It was low-key perfect. My photo with the pink-and-yellow landscape got featured on a local page via #cherryblossom25 — and totally deserves it.

Akagi Nanmen Senbonzakura, Gunma
#cherryblossom25
Akagi Nanmen Senbonzakura is what cherry blossom dreams are made of. Tucked in Gunma Prefecture at the southern base of Mt. Akagi, this place is a 1.3 km stretch lined with over 1,000 cherry trees, and it literally feels like walking through a pink tunnel. I came here because someone tagged it in #cherryblossom25 and I knew I had to see it for myself. There’s something magical about being surrounded by blossoms on both sides — and Mt. Akagi looming gently in the background only adds to the dramatic scenery. There was a local festival going on too, with food stalls selling everything from miso konjac to sakura-flavored mochi. The air was filled with the scent of flowers and festival food — not a bad combo. It’s a bit of a trip from Tokyo, but if you’re a blossom chaser like me, it’s 100% worth it. This was a major highlight of #cherryblossom25!

Classic retro café! Photogenic lunch at "Parlor Restaurant Momoya" in Maebashi 🍝☕
#Spring0yentrip
"Momoya" in Maebashi is a retro Showa-era parlor-style restaurant that has been loved by locals for many years. The nostalgic red sofas and wooden tables are comfortable and create a truly striking space!
Their signature dishes are teppan napolitan and cream soda! The traditional taste is still the same today, and it was somehow comforting and delicious🍽️
Access: About 10 minutes on foot from Maebashi Station. It gets crowded during lunchtime, so it's best to go after 2pm!

Uniqlo Coffee
This cafe at the top of Uniqlo isn't large and there's a small but seemingly adequate amount of seating for the fast turnover. We tried the special Geisha blend hand-drip coffee and it was a bit fruity but otherwise not particularly special. Still, it was an ok cup of black coffee.
They also sell a few small packaged snacks to go with your coffee.
Not bad for a convenient coffee break whilst shopping at Uniqlo, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come for the coffee.
