Hoi An's Chua Cau is a symbolic site in the old town, famous for its Japanese-style architecture. Built by Japanese merchants in the 17th century, it is even depicted on Vietnamese currency. Chua Cau is associated with the legendary monster Namazu. It was believed that the monster's body stretched from Vietnam to Japan, causing natural disasters with its movements. The bridge was constructed to control the monster, symbolizing peace and prosperity. This bridge is also known as the Japanese Bridge or Lai Vien Kieu, meaning 'Bridge to Welcome Guests from Afar.'

When I visited, the bridge was still under renovation, and there was much controversy that the bridge had become too white and modern after the renovation, losing its original appearance. I arrived in Hoi An on the evening of July 30th through a travel tour, but when I went to Chùa Cầu with high expectations, the bridge was dark and unacceptable to visitors. It was cold and desolate. However, the next morning, I rented a motorbike and went back to Hoi An with the determination to take pictures of Chùa Cầu. By then, the bridge had already been repainted and work was underway to restore its former appearance. I could feel that Hoi An was listening to the opinions of tourists. Hoi An welcomed me warmly that day. Everything felt light and peaceful, and I was finally able to take the photo I wanted with Jjuakko. It was a truly happy moment.

At the entrance, there is an altar where incense can be burned, and right next to it stands a stele indicating its status as a historical site, along with a statue. The most memorable moment was when I stepped into the area with the altar. The air was filled with the scent of incense, and the sacred atmosphere and warm feeling deeply touched my heart.

Hoi An's Japanese Covered Bridge, which is also featured on the back of the Vietnamese 20,000 VND banknote, has been undergoing restoration work since 2023 due to its aging.
