I can't remember how many times I've walked around the icy lake, but this is definitely the most beautiful one. 🧥Notes for recent trekking on the icy lake: 1, Trekking poles, ice claws, sunglasses, snow covers, gloves, hats are all necessities. 2, The average thickness of the snow along the whole journey is around the calf, but because the path has been walked out by everyone, it's relatively easy to walk, just need to pay attention to clean the ice claws in time, otherwise it will still be slippery. 3, For friends who have no trekking experience, the difficulty of the icy lake after the blizzard is greater than usual, because the whole journey is icy and snowy. Although there are ice claws, walking on the snow will consume more leg strength and energy, it is recommended to start as early as possible, and assume that it takes about 1 hour longer than usual. 🪡About dressing: Top: lulu quick-drying base layer + pata wool fleece + Arc'teryx beta ar Bottom: quick-drying compression pants + Arc'teryx gamma lt I didn't add or remove any clothes during the whole journey. Getting There - From the Upper Yubeng Village, it is about two hours’ hike to reach Yakou with an alititude of 3,700 meters. Then you will pass through a primitive forest to reach the Base Camp. From there, it’s another one hour’s hike to reach the Ice Lake. I hiked from upper Yubeng village to the Iced Lake for less than three hours one way and honestly the views along the way were absolutely stunning - having traveled to quite some places I have never seen anything like that in the entire world. It is literally out of the world. When you reach the Iced Lake, you will see that it is a dark green lake that is formed by the melting snow water from the Meili Snow Mountain. The Icy Lake near Yubeng Village is about 3800m height, which takes 4-5 hours to arrive and 3 hours to go back. It's my first snow hiking trail, kinda of super excited. First we will come across a farm, then all the way up into the forest with more and more snow piling up. It's unbelievable how those lovely and bold those squirrels are. They just came into us and even jump onto us for food, eat and carry some back to their home. There is a platform where we can have a quite open view of the icy lake, and forest decorated with snow, what a Christmas vibe! Coming down from the platform, here comes my favourite part：super thick snow in the forest! Can't help laying down and have fun, while other people have a snowball fight! Hahaha~ After 1.5 hours hike through another farm, and a small peak, we finally arrived the gorgeous Icy Lake covered in white, with some glaciers on the top. Among them, the Sacred Waterfall route is relatively easy, taking about 4-5 hours round trip; the Ice Lake route is more challenging, requiring a full day; and the Sacred Lake route is the most mysterious and difficult, with high altitude and easy to get lost, requiring a guide and not recommended for the weak or those with altitude sickness. Starting from the village, the initial part is a relatively gentle forest with lush green vegetation. During the mushroom season, villagers can be seen going up the mountain to search for matsutake mushrooms, but the harvest is minimal, which explains the high prices. There is a steep slope before Xiaonong Ranch, which becomes slippery after rain, making it difficult even for horses and mules to stand firm. In the wooden house at Xiaonong Ranch, you can replenish your energy and rest for a while before starting the final ascent. The weather changes unpredictably, with sudden heavy rain catching you off guard. After a short while, the sky clears up again, only to turn cloudy and rainy once more. The ascent is a test of physical strength. My first-ever hiking trip was dedicated to Yubeng. I have longed to visit Yubeng for a very long time, and since 2019, I have finally realized my dream of hiking there. It took a whole day to travel from Lijiang to Yubeng Village, and by the time I checked into the Upper Yubeng hostel, it was already six in the evening. The plan was to take two routes: the first day was Upper Yubeng to the Ice Lake; the second day was Upper Yubeng to Lower Yubeng to the Sacred Waterfall. 1️⃣ The hike to the Ice Lake was exhilarating with many steep slopes. We set off at 8:30 in the morning and successfully reached the summit before one in the afternoon. On the way down, we 'slid' all the way; 2️⃣ The second day's hike to the Sacred Waterfall was much easier compared to the Ice Lake route. Unfortunately, it has been snowing in Yubeng for the past few days, and we couldn't reach the top of the waterfall due to an avalanche. Therefore, we only made it to the base camp before turning back. However, the snowy scenery of the Sacred Waterfall route was much more spectacular than that of the Ice Lake, and it was also particularly suitable for snowball fights. Hanging prayer flags and performing the Sarlonba were all done on the Sacred Waterfall route. Each has its own charm, but the path from Lower Yubeng to Upper Yubeng was really difficult to walk, with steep slopes all the way . The original plan for the third day was to go down the mountain by off-road vehicle, but continuous snowfall in Yubeng had blocked the mountain roads. So we hiked from Upper Yubeng to Lower Yubeng, took a ride to the starting point of Ninong, and hiked eight kilometers down the mountain. It was indeed a pleasant surprise. The Ninong Grand Canyon is also very beautiful. The downhill was too shaky, and the last kilometer was completed entirely by willpower.
