Strolling through the narrow stone-paved streets, you'll find handmade bamboo crafts, embroidered fabrics, local calligraphy, and traditional clay teapots. A must-buy is Huangyao fermented tofu and Osmanthus wine, both local specialties. Bargaining is common but friendly. The peaceful atmosphere and historic setting make shopping here a unique cultural experience.

On February 28, I went to the train station at 7am and took the first bus at 7:50 to visit Guposhan. Arrive at the scenic spot at 8:40. Tickets are free (for those over 65 years old), but you must buy a sightseeing bus for ￥15 as the elderly may be too tired. The sightseeing bus drives directly to Xiangu Waterfall, takes a short rest below the waterfall, breathes high concentration of negative ions (more than 90,000 per cubic centimeter), then goes to Xiangu Lawn (Xiangu Temple) → Lover's Forest → Fang Family Tea Garden → Xiangu Village → Guyaochong → returns to the gate of the scenic area, a total of 4.8 kilometers. At 11:00, wait for the bus back to the train station at the bus stop at the entrance of the scenic area. The bus will depart at 11:30 → train station (12:15). We went to Huangyao Ancient Town in the afternoon. The bus left the train station at 12:20 and arrived at the bus terminal at 12:50. It was very noisy on the bus and the passengers spoke in loud voices, which was really not something we were used to. It has been two hours and I haven’t reached my destination yet, so I started to live a slow life. An interesting thing happened. Large trucks couldn't pass through the section of road where the bridge was being repaired, so we had to switch to a van. After passing an unknown local market in Huangyao, we arrived at the Yanxi Gate in the west of the ancient town at 15:00. I called Yuegu Farmhouse but no one answered. I asked the security guard at the ticket gate and he roughly knew how to get there. People over 65 years old are free of charge. Mainland ID cards can be recognized by facial recognition, but Taiwan ID cards and temporary residence permits cannot. You need to show your ID to enter and exit. We passed Yuegu Farmhouse Restaurant along the cobblestone streets of the ancient town. The proprietress of the farmhouse was here. Since we hadn’t had lunch yet, she immediately made a portion of black bean noodles. The portion was large and very filling. She added black bean and chili sauce. It tasted so good that we finished our meal. The boss's wife said that her daughter is getting married in a few days and asked me to have lunch with them tomorrow at noon. She was so enthusiastic. Sitting in the dining area, looking at the scenery and the tourists coming and going is very comfortable and quiet. After resting for a while, the boss took me to check into the B&B. The boss’s surname is Mo. The Mo family is one of the three most prominent families in Huangyao. The other two are the Liang family and the Gu family, and the Liang family is the largest. Each family has its own ancestral hall. In addition to the ancestral hall, the Mo family's old house has been rented out as a hotel with about forty guest rooms. The boss’s wife is the boss’s daughter-in-law. They are both indigenous people, smart and capable, and are kind and warm to others. This time I had the rare opportunity to stay in their homestay, so I was able to quickly learn about some of the historical origins of Huangyao Ancient Town, which is a cause for celebration. Although this B&B is not in the ancient town, it is cost-effective. The owner said that I was the first Taiwanese to stay here. Maybe this is fate! After putting away my luggage, I entered the ancient town from the East Gate Tower and walked around again. My back was sweating. I plan to walk around again tomorrow morning.
