All Moments About Castelsardo
Falling in love Castelsardo - Sardinia
Castelsardo is a picturesque historic town on the northern coast of Sardinia. The old town, fortified with a castle, is an interesting and atmospheric place to visit, and Castelsardo's position makes it a good stop on a tour between western Sardinia and the islands and resorts of the east.
A local town bus run by a company called Spina runs several times a day up to the castle, around the town and out to the nearby beach resort Lu Bagnu. This may be helpful for visitors. It is a tiring walk up to the castle, especially on a hot day; either along a zigzag road or steeply up an alley and steps. It is worth the climb, though. The picturesque old town is completely different to the modern town spread below. There are old buildings, atmospheric lanes and stairways, and enticing cafe and restaurant tables set around corners and on terraces.
This historic town is best known for its ancient castle. Still, there are also beautiful sandy beaches, making this a strategic stopover between west Sardinia and the islands in the east.
Castelsardo was named the "Città Regia" (Royal city) in 1448, when it was united to the Aragonese Kingdom of Sardinia. During the reign of Charles Emmanuel III of Savoy, in 1767, it took the final name of Castelsardo, but instead of replacing its emblem with the cross of the Savoy, kept the bars of Aragon.

The castle village towering over the village
Just on the northwestern coast of Sardinia, you’ll find Castelsardo. A village with an old castle towering over it… containing a good part of the village. You’ll find a few bars, a museum, a few lovely viewpoints and a lot of history right between the residences. Quite the climb, but one that’s absolutely worthwhile. #sardinia #italy #italia #castelsardo #castle #sassari

Walking to Castelsardo while avoiding the main road.
I was visiting Lu Bagno and wanted to go to Castelsardo without walking too much on the main road, as there is a small curvy stretch of main road without any real footpath. I did actually walk the main road on my way back, but this involves climbing over a road barrier and can't or shouldn't be done with kids. The route through the back land is a nice albeit longer alternative and will take you through beautiful countryside and lost places, also past the well stocked Eurospin Supermarket and the marina/port of Castelsardo. Once in Castelsardo, you get some amazing views going up to the old Castello, which also features a museum.
