[2025 Tasman River Attraction] Travel Guide for Hooker Valley track (Updated Jan)

10/18 We are at Hooker Valley track🤩 Why does the title say that you can see beautiful scenery by taking a walk? In fact, it was mainly because we went to climb a mountain on 10/16, and the scenery along the way was super beautiful, but it took more than 8 hours in total to go back and forth + take photos😅I’m tired! (I will write about this itinerary later~) Okay, let’s go back to the Hooker Valley track. This trail is really approachable in comparison. It takes about 2 hours to go back and forth without taking pictures, and it’s basically a very easy trail, and there are no steep slopes that need to be climbed or lowered. My legs and feet that climbed a mountain two days ago are very friendly😍 Our final destination one way is Hooker Lake, You will pass three bridges along the way, and you will also see the beautiful Mueller Lake and Hooker River next to you. The weather is very good and the scenery is super beautiful! The color of the water looks like milk has been added🤩 Although walking is easy, there is no shelter, so everyone should remember to wear sun protection and a hat. Finally we reached Hooker Lake. The mountain facing the lake is Mount Cook! There are large ice cubes on the lake that have not yet melted, and there are cute ducks. Although it is starting to get a bit foggy when we get here, it is still so beautiful~🤩 We then drove to Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Shop to eat salmon! (Picture 16-17) This salmon sashimi is really fresh and delicious! Highly recommended! All in all, I highly recommend this trail. Traveling in New Zealand sometimes feel a bit unreal. when you go to Mount cook it’s feel so u real that you need pinch your self !!! The Hooker Vally track is a 3hour walk , 1,5h one way. The walk is so beautiful, you will pass 3 swing bridges on the way. if you are scared of heights - DONT LOOK DOWN!! make sure to brings a wind jacket because the weather can change FAST. you might start the walk with sun but the last part of the walk the wind can change fast and it’s might come some rain! no matter what make sure to visit Mt Cook!

One of the most popular hiking trails in the area is the Hooker Valley Track, which provides stunning views of Aoraki / Mount Cook and the surrounding landscape, including glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and turquoise lakes.

Just a 5-minute drive from Hooker Valley, you'll reach this very short track. The endpoint is a glacial lake, greyish in color. It's essentially surrounded by mountains on all sides. You can climb the mountain on the left to get a better view of the Tasman Glacier, and it seems possible to walk along the ridge to the spot where you can see the Blue Lake. There are no signs, and I didn't dare to go by myself, but two young people went there. This path is very easy, and there were many people taking speedboats on the glacial lake, heading somewhere unknown, probably a group activity.

Hooker Valley Track

This is absolutely amazing and wonderful!!! The view is superb. We spend 4 hours for the hiking in Hooker Valley Track. There is free car parking nearby. And it is super windy and cold in the early morning. So, make sure to bring a windbreaker to keep yourself warm. And also make sure wear a fit sport shoes for hiking. You may bring along some snack incase you need energy when hiking.!!!

Not really arduous, but just arduous for an unfit person like me. But the weather and views make it all so worth it! Recommend to go in winter and do bring some snacks or sandwiches to eat after the hike as there are a couple of picnic locations. Instagrammable, but photos cannot do this place justice. A must visit when you’re in Queenstown NZ!
