On Sukhumvit Soi 55, Japan Street in Thong Lo District, Bangkok, there is a small shop that specializes in oyster cakes and has been standing firm for a long time. Of course, there is a reason for this! The auntie chef of the shop is right at the door, so it is easy to recognize. The store is not big, and the customers are both local Thais and tourists. The strange thing is that this restaurant seems to be quite famous in Korea, and you can often see a bunch of Korean girls eating there..
Oyster cake, also known as oyster omelette, is called หอยทอด (pronounced: 海 tod) in Thai. หอย (pronounced: 海) actually just means shellfish. When combined with “fried” ทอด (pronounced: tod), it becomes oyster cake / oyster omelette by convention! The shop specializes in oyster cakes, and sells the following types:
Hoy tod Mushroom Oyster Cake (60-80 Baht)
Seafood tod Seafood Omelette (100-120 baht)
Or suan soft oyster cake (about 120 baht)
Or ror Crispy Fried Oyster Cake (about 120 baht)
Pat Thai Kung Sod (80-100 baht)
Nick ordered the Or suan soft oyster pancake with chives and sprouts.
Thai oyster cakes have a stickier texture because they use more batter, and the oysters used here are quite large.
The crispy egg-wrapped shrimp fried with golden rice noodles (pad thai) is also their signature dish.
The golden vermicelli is wrapped in the egg, the shrimp is quite big, and the ingredients are sufficient. It is paired with the delicious homemade chili sauce. Perhaps the real ingredients are the reason why the store can attract local customers and tourists?
