Historic buildings
Baokuangyuan belongs to the Rinzai sect. It was originally the Chiwan Temple built by Emperor Shirakawa in the Heian period. The so-called Chiwanji Temple was established to protect the country and ensure the stability of the jade body. It was called Shanjin Temple at that time. Until the Muromachi shogunate era, in 1367 AD, after the death of Ashikaga Yoshihide, the second-generation general of the Muromachi shogunate, Zenruji was renamed Bodhi Temple. After that, the eighth generation general Ashikaga Yoshimasa changed the name of the temple to the name of Ashikaga Yoshihide, that is, Treasure Basket Temple. The monastery is famous for the first tomb of Nanmu Masao, a military commander of the Southern Dynasty, adjacent to the tomb of Yoshihide Ashikaga. The migratory garden and the red maple in the courtyard in late autumn are even more amazing.
