During this trip, I will explore Japan’s food and culture, from the unique conger eel cuisine to the fragrant coffee to the magnificent Himeji Castle. This will be an unforgettable journey. 🐟 The unique flavor of conger eel The gastronomic journey begins at Hiiragi Restaurant, famous for its conger eel. Although I personally don't think it tastes better than regular eel rice, the set meal here is surprising. The set meal included conger eel cooked in different ways, such as pan-fried, steamed, and tempura, allowing me to fully experience the diverse flavors of this fish. Every preparation demonstrates the chef's ingenuity, especially the tempura, which is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Even though I was a little disappointed with the taste of the conger eel, I still appreciated the care that was taken to give me a more comprehensive understanding of this fish. ☕ Have a cup of coffee and feel the local culture Afterwards, I headed to Himeji Castle. On the way, I passed by Jiaolaowuji Park. The natural scenery here makes me feel happy. Before entering the park, I made a special stop to visit NAKAZAKI Coffee Roaster. This is a cafe run by friendly grandparents who enthusiastically introduce coffee beans from four to five countries, and the beans from each country have three different roasting degrees to suit the tastes of various coffee lovers. . I ordered a cup of Ethiopian medium-roast hand-brewed coffee. While waiting, I couldn't help but imagine the story behind every bean here. When the coffee was served, I walked outside the park and saw the cherry blossoms dancing in the breeze and petals falling in the air. It was a beautiful scene. If we had visited a week earlier, the cherry blossom trees would have made the scenery even more spectacular, making people marvel at the beauty of nature. 🏰 Stroll to Himeji Castle After staying in the park for about half an hour, we officially set off for Himeji Castle. Following the flow of people, we passed Sakuramon Bridge, passed through Otemon, and finally came to the monument of Himeji Castle. My first castle visit to Himeji Castle during my trip in Japan. There were so many levels in the Castle which you can explore, all the while learning about its history such as it's past occupants/families. Throughout the castle levels (especially at the top), I got to take in the beautiful scenery overseeing the castle's surrounding architecture and its gardens (including the city). Even the entrance and path leading up to the Castle are lined by cherry blossom trees in bloom during the spring period we visited. But if you love greenery/nature the Koko-en garden beside Himeji castle is also a must go with tranquil rivers and a colourful scene painted by a large array of plants and flowers 💮 Tickets are needed for both the castle and garden but can be purchased as a bundle. Himeji is considered an off-the-beaten-path destination. Over two days, we visited the zoo and amusement park. The most unique aspect of the zoo is that if you drive, you can enter the park directly by car. There are tigers, lions, leopards, zebras, and deer. Of course, make sure not to open your windows. The amusement park had many attractions closed, possibly due to the winter season. Himeji Castle is very well-maintained and definitely worth a visit. Remember to buy the combined ticket with Koko-en Garden for ¥1050. The eel rice in Koko-en Garden is also worth trying. 👍🏻👍🏻

#JanuaryGoodPlaces2025 About 100 meters outside Himeji Castle, there is a food and game stall area. I bought a takoyaki from an old man here. It was surprisingly delicious. The teriyaki sauce was sour and sweet, and the octopus inside was large, tender and crispy. It's really fun to eat takoyaki while enjoying the surrounding scenery.

I went to Japan with a friend, and I didn't look at any guides, I just followed along. Himeji Castle wasn't part of the plan, but my friend heard that the maple leaves there were already red, so we went from Takamatsu to Okayama and then to Himeji Castle. Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple is the filming location for the 2003 movie "The Last Samurai" starring Tom Cruise and the 2015 movie "The Assassin" directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, which made this ancient temple known to the world. Shoshazan Engyo-ji Temple was founded by Shoku Shonin in 966. It takes less than 5 minutes to reach the temple by cable car from the foot of the mountain. Known as the "Mount Hiei of the West," the Maniden Hall enshrines the six-armed Nyoirin Kannon Bodhisattva, and it is said that the temple opens on January 18 every year for the Oni-oi (Demon Chasing) Festival. "Mani" is Sanskrit, and it is equivalent to the main hall of Engyo-ji Temple, which was built in the first year of the Tenroku era (970). It is said that before the temple was built, Shoku Shonin saw a celestial being worshiping a cherry tree, so he carved a statue of Kannon on the tree trunk with roots. He then built the Maniden Hall halfway up the mountain. The Maniden Hall is a stage-style building, using the "hanging construction method" technique, with giant wooden tenons fixed on the sloping columns.
