Kanamori Nagachika used the ruins of Tenjinyama Castle to build Takayama Castle and planned the castle town at the same time. Later, the shogunate used political means to make Takayama a "Tenryo" and razed Takayama Castle to the ground, allowing the emperor to directly govern it. Looking back to the Edo period more than 400 years ago, this place was a gathering place for merchants and craftsmen, forming a prosperous business district. Today, the old buildings have been preserved, and the machiya buildings and "lattice" windows exude a simple elegance. The local brewery brewed sake for Reiwa, and the hospital was integrated into the streetscape, using a simple sign.
