[2025 Suzhou Attraction] Travel Guide for Hanshan Temple (Updated Jan)

#chinatrip After visiting the 1000years temple - Hanshan Temple, there is this huge bell that is actually the sub-site of this temple. Reason being the chinese poem does mention the sound of the bell that reminded the poet about the arrival of the ship by the ship deck at late hour while waiting for someone that poet misses. The huge bell was covered in a small pagoda and were well kept for its purpose. To add-on, there is this huge stone carved with the poem about less than 200metres away. Strongly recommend to also visit this place before leaving to next destination.

It has gained its popularity among the Chinese people because of a poem from a famous poet, Zhang Ji from Tang Dynasty and nowadays, it has been written all over the temples by many poets in variety of fonts. Besides that, the temple is famous with a super giant bell that allows the believer to ring it and pray to get the blessing from the god. Right opposite of it, a super huge monument writing the poem on it is also towering over to commemorate ZhangJi. Hanshan Temple is famous both at home and abroad for Zhang Ji's "Night Mooring on Maple Bridge: The moon sets, crows cry and the sky is filled with frost, the river maple fishermen are facing melancholy, the Hanshan Temple outside the city of Suzhou, the midnight bell rings for the passenger ship." Therefore, Hanshan Temple is one of the must-visit attractions in Suzhou. However, many people feel that their interest in visiting is affected, which is a pity. The Hanshan temple is a really huge tourist location, it’s located towards the western part of Suzhou, this location is one that I found was really good for photography. you can see many different spots around the area that are highly photogenic. I Definitely recommend that you visit this place during the spring time, a time which I feel you would experience this temple at its finest. I visited this spot with my photography buddy and walked around and got these awesome shots. These are a few more shots from my last trip to the Hanshan temple! where I went exploring around the Hanshan temple. the Hanshan Temple is situated three miles (about five kilometers) from Fengqiao Old Town in Suzhou. A question some people might ask is, why is it called the Hanshan temple. Well It is said that in the Tang Dynasty, a famous monk Han Shan came to take charge of the temple, hence its name. This place is known for its rich sense of history and culture such as the annual ringing of the temple bells to signify the entrance into the new year. This was one of the most aesthetically impressive places that I’ve been privileged to fly my drone at. this majestic place is located in the Gusu district of Suzhou China. This is a Buddhist temple and Monastery characterized by its wonderful Chinese structures and its rich traditions and culture. The current name of the monastery derives from Hanshan, the legendary monk and poet. Knowing all this, I was sure that I had to make the trip to see It for myself, and of course I took my drone with me so I would be able to get a unique perspective of the whole experience! 📍Hanshan Temple, Suzhou Hanshan Temple is also called “cold mountain temple”. It’s a Buddhist temple in Suzhou. This is one of my favorite temple. Even though I’m not a temple person, but I just like this temple. I like it because it’s just simple. Dominated by yellow and red. Not much decoration. It’s just simple and beautiful. I came here in December. It’s already cold enough and the leaves fell from the trees. The color of the leaves matched the temple (see my third pict). Hanshan Temple was built during the Tianjian period of the Southern Liang Dynasty. During the Zhide period of the Tang Dynasty, the poet Zhang Ji passed by Hanshan Temple and wrote the famous poem "A Night Mooring by Maple Bridge," which made Hanshan Temple famous. The main attractions in Hanshan Temple include the Mahavira Hall, Sutra Library, Bell Tower, Stele Gallery, and Fengjiang Tower. The main scenery is collectively known as the Twelve Scenic Spots. On this trip to Suzhou, I saw the Hanshan Temple and Maple Bridge from the famous poem with my own eyes. The water under the Maple Bridge is gentle, and the ancient temple is solemn and dignified. I recorded it here and hope to give you some reference. 🏠Accommodation 📍UrCove by Hyatt Suzhou Shantang Street, the hotel is very clean, very close to Qilishantang, and convenient transportation 🚶🏻‍♀️Itinerary DAY1️⃣: Qilishantang I set off from Shanghai on the 29th and arrived at Suzhou Station in the afternoon. I stored my luggage at the hotel first. I wanted to go to Jinji Lake to watch the sunset in the afternoon, but I was too hungry, so I went to eat crab roe noodles first. I took a walk around Shantang Street and took some satisfactory photos before going back to the hotel to rest. DAY2️⃣: Lingering Garden ➡ Xiyuan Temple ➡ Hanshan Temple ➡ Night Tour of Shantang Street When I went there, many leaves had fallen in the Lingering Garden, but it was still very beautiful. There is also a check-in place for Zhang Linghe on the first floor, and the stairs are also very good for taking photos. For someone like me who likes taking photos, I love it so much.
