One of the must-visit temples in China - Hanshan Temple.
"Outside the Gu Su city lies the Cold Mountain Temple, at midnight the bell rings for the passing boats" - How can one claim to have been to Suzhou without visiting the Cold Mountain Temple outside the city?
The temple is not big, but the incense is very strong. Some people say that it is most effective to pray for marriage here. So the young talents who kneel in front of the Buddha become the incense guests here.
🌟Highlight features:
In history, Hanshan Temple was once one of the top ten famous temples in China, with many ancient relics and stone inscriptions inside the temple.
Every year there is a bell-ringing ceremony for New Year's Eve. Some say there are 108 worries in a year, and in Buddhist scriptures it says "Hearing the sound of the bell, worries are cleared, wisdom grows, and enlightenment arises." On this day, ringing the bell 108 times can eliminate all worries.
🕙Business hours:

Hanshan Temple one of the top visited temples
Getting There - You can take a Didi to the entrance, the metro is around a 20 minute walk, there are local coaches and buses running too
Attractions - Although it's busy there's also a sense of calm between the madness, there's endless temples to look into and pay respect to the gods, fish in small ponds and a variety of statues
Hotels - There are most likely several hotels in this area however I didn't stay here, it'll be cheaper to stay outside the city center
Food & Restaurants - there are some small street food vendors outside selling local snacks and drinks
Price - 20 rmb per person

More sight from the Hanshan Temple!
The Hanshan temple is a really huge tourist location, it’s located towards the western part of Suzhou, this location is one that I found was really good for photography. you can see many different spots around the area that are highly photogenic.
I Definitely recommend that you visit this place during the spring time, a time which I feel you would experience this temple at its finest.
I visited this spot with my photography buddy and walked around and got these awesome shots.
One thing is that this spot can get pretty crowded. so many tourists and locals come to visit this spot which sometimes makes it really crowded so you have to find the right time to come if you mind having random tourists walk into your shot. #scenicspotguide #travelinspiration #momentsmission #unforgettableexperiences #springholiday

The pleasant sights of Hanshan temple!
These are a few more shots from my last trip to the Hanshan temple! where I went exploring around the Hanshan temple. the Hanshan Temple is situated three miles (about five kilometers) from Fengqiao Old Town in Suzhou.
A question some people might ask is, why is it called the Hanshan temple. Well It is said that in the Tang Dynasty, a famous monk Han Shan came to take charge of the temple, hence its name. This place is known for its rich sense of history and culture such as the annual ringing of the temple bells to signify the entrance into the new year.
Another thing you can do at Hanshan is to take a boat tour of the place to see the sights while enjoying the peaceful boat cruise!

The Hanshan Temple. Suzhou from Above!
This was one of the most aesthetically impressive places that I’ve been privileged to fly my drone at. this majestic place is located in the Gusu district of Suzhou China.
This is a Buddhist temple and Monastery characterized by its wonderful Chinese structures and its rich traditions and culture. The current name of the monastery derives from Hanshan, the legendary monk and poet.
Knowing all this, I was sure that I had to make the trip to see It for myself, and of course I took my drone with me so I would be able to get a unique perspective of the whole experience!
The general temple are was free to enter, except for the main temple which I could only properly capture from an aerial perspective. #suzhou #scenicspotguide #china #travelinspiration #temples #hanshantemple

Hanshan Temple, Suzhou, China

📍Hanshan Temple, Suzhou
Hanshan Temple is also called “cold mountain temple”. It’s a Buddhist temple in Suzhou. This is one of my favorite temple. Even though I’m not a temple person, but I just like this temple. I like it because it’s just simple. Dominated by yellow and red. Not much decoration. It’s just simple and beautiful. I came here in December. It’s already cold enough and the leaves fell from the trees. The color of the leaves matched the temple (see my third pict). What a pretty combination

A city that captures your heart at first glance—Suzhou
D4:2024.6.16 Record of a delightful journey
I, who am already familiar with Suzhou, feel a longing every time I visit, truly fond of this warm city. Perhaps it's because one can fall in love with a city just like with a person...
Stroll along the bustling Pingjiang Road, experience the charm of 'When you arrive in Gusu, every household rests by the river'; seek out the tranquility hidden in the bustling 'Cat's Sky City', recite Bai Juyi's 'The south of the Yangtze is good, the scenery I knew of old, at sunrise river flowers red and fiery, in spring the river water's green as blue, can one not recall the south of the Yangtze?' and feel the romance of a thousand-year-old Gusu...
The bell tones of Hanshan Temple are deep and lingering, Maple Bridge and Jiangcun Bridge gaze at each other from afar, wandering by the vast Grand Canal, the lines 'The moon sets, crows cry and frost fills the sky, maple trees and fishing lights match the sleepless, outside Gusu city is Hanshan Temple, where midnight bell tones reach the passenger boats' will intoxicate you in this dreamy Jiangnan...

After visiting the 1000years temple - Hanshan Temple, there is this huge bell that is actually the sub-site of this temple. Reason being the chinese poem does mention the sound of the bell that reminded the poet about the arrival of the ship by the ship deck at late hour while waiting for someone that poet misses.
The huge bell was covered in a small pagoda and were well kept for its purpose. To add-on, there is this huge stone carved with the poem about less than 200metres away. Strongly recommend to also visit this place before leaving to next destination.

The ancient temple bell tolls, a serene journey to Hanshan Temple
🌟 The moment you step into Hanshan Temple, it's as if you've crossed the boundaries of time and space, arriving at a sanctuary where the soul can find rest. Ancient trees reach for the sky, light mist curls around, and every step echoes with a thousand years of history. At the temple gate, the three powerful characters for 'Hanshan Temple' draw one in with their compelling presence.
👍 Wandering through the temple, each Buddha statue radiates compassion and wisdom, compelling visitors to slow their pace and feel a sense of reverence rising within. The temple's bell tower is particularly striking; the ancient bell, ringing out during festivals or at dawn and dusk, sends its distant peals washing over the spirit, as if narrating ancient and eternal tales.
✅ The most unforgettable moment is standing by the Maple Bridge, watching the babbling water, with the immortal lines 'The moon sets, crows caw, frost fills the sky; maples and fishing lights face my sleepless sorrow' echoing in one's ears. In that moment, it's as if you're engaging in a timeless spiritual dialogue with Zhang Ji, experiencing the solitude and transcendence of spending the night moored by Maple Bridge.
❤ Hanshan Temple is not just a temple; it is a flowing painting, a silent poem. Here, I learned to listen to the tranquility within, to feel the peace and wisdom that come with the passage of time. Upon leaving, my heart was filled not only with a longing for the beautiful scenery but also with new insights into life—finding inner freedom and composure amidst the restless world.

Cold Mountain Temple outside Gusu City
A famous ancient poem has made certain scenic spots famous, and Hanshan Temple in Suzhou is one of them. The Tang Dynasty poet once wrote: 'Cold Mountain Temple outside Gusu City, the midnight bell reaches the traveler's boat,' etching the thousand-year-old temple and Maple Bridge into the long river of history. Located in the Gusu District of Suzhou, Hanshan Temple is connected to Maple Bridge. Nowadays, when traveling to Hanshan Temple, visiting Maple Bridge is also a must, as the poetic sentiment of the past, combined with today's scenery, can be intoxicating.

.
✅Travel Recommendations
There are many worthwhile attractions in Suzhou, let's start with two recommendations:
.
- Shantang Street: The night view here is very beautiful, with white walls and black tiles, the sound of oars and the shadow of lights, the beauty of Jiangnan is all in sight.
- Suzhou Museum: Designed by Mr. I. M. Pei, the museum itself is like a work of art, where every casual snapshot is a masterpiece.
.
In addition, Suzhou also has Pingjiang Road, Humble Administrator's Garden, Xiyuan Temple, Tiger Hill, Hanshan Temple, and other attractions worth visiting.

Once you enter Gusu, you are surrounded by the beauty of Jiangnan
In mid-January, we arrived in Suzhou, Jiangsu
We visited the Hanshan Temple, known for the verse 'Outside Gusu city, Hanshan Temple's bell tolls reach the passenger boats at midnight,' enjoyed the scenery, and fed the koi
We went to Pingjiang Road, full of Jiangnan charm, tried on Hanfu, and tasted Suzhou-style snacks
We strolled along Shantang Street at night with its dimming lights, and felt the breeze of Suzhou
...
The most satisfying part of this trip was the homestay we chose. It was clean and sanitary, with a duplex structure, Nordic style, warm and comfortable indoors, and it was also very cheap! Just over a hundred yuan in price!
Overall, I am very satisfied with this trip! I love Suzhou so much!

Autumn Scenic Spot | Autumn in Suzhou begins with Hanshan Temple
| Autumn in Suzhou begins with Hanshan Temple. When you feel the cool breeze, it's the time when autumn quietly arrives🍂. "The moon sets, crows cry and frost fills the sky; maple trees and fishermen's lights reflect my troubled sleep." In the must-visit list for autumn appreciation🎞, Hanshan Temple in Suzhou is definitely a renowned spot🔥.
·
🕌🕌Hanshan Temple
🗺Address: Fengqiao Road, Gusu District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province
·
Autumn in Suzhou begins at Hanshan Temple🕌. When an autumn breeze blows the ancient bell in the temple tower overnight🔔, in an instant, bright yellow leaves flutter down, and the red maples set off the corner pavilions, presenting a vivid autumn oil painting🎨.
The autumn days at Hanshan Temple are truly suitable for leisurely autumn appreciation. Light pink and bright yellow form the main color scheme of the temple🎈, with the bright yellow complementing the yellowing leaf tips. The warm sun of autumn frolics on the walls and eaves, twinkling with a comforting warm light.
Take a deep breath, and the inconspicuous osmanthus flowers hidden among the trees, carrying an intoxicatingly strong fragrance, vie to enter your lungs. And it's not just the osmanthus that's bursting with lively energy, but also the pond full of koi and the cats that can be seen everywhere🐱~
The cats lazily enjoy the autumn sun☀, and if you get hungry, go for a bowl of the temple's unique vegetarian noodles🍜. Even simple food can bring you great satisfaction!

A temple fulls of Chinese poem ♥️
#chinatrip
Located in Gusu district in Suzhou, Han Shan temple that built for over 1300 years, covering 13000 square meters is one of the top 10 famous temple in China. It has gained its popularity among the Chinese people because of a poem from a famous poet, Zhang Ji from Tang Dynasty and nowadays, it has been written all over the temples by many poets in variety of fonts.
Besides that, the temple is famous with a super giant bell that allows the believer to ring it and pray to get the blessing from the god. Right opposite of it, a super huge monument writing the poem on it is also towering over to commemorate ZhangJi.
If you travel to Suzhou, make sure you put it in your list and spend a least 2-3 hours to explore the poetic and picturesque place♥️

Come to the ancestral home of the Hehe culture, and worship China's own gods of love and marriage
Suzhou has many cultural hallmarks, such as gardens, Suzhou craftsmanship, Kunqu opera, Pingtan narrative singing, Suzhou embroidery, and the bells of Hanshan Temple are certainly one of them. Visit the Maple Bridge scenic area where the great poet Zhang Ji once moored his boat, enjoy a serving of Guanyin's blessed noodles, contemplate the way of harmony, get a stamp, and engage in activities like fish petting, cat cuddling, and bell ringing...
Hanshan Temple, originally built during the Tianjian era of the Southern Dynasties (502-519), is also known as 'Miaoli Pubright Court'. During the Tang Dynasty's Kaiyuan era, Monk Xiqian established the temple, and because the poet-monk Hanshan once practiced in seclusion here, it was named Hanshan Temple, one of China's top ten famous temples.
Hanshan was one of the three great vernacular poets of the Tang Dynasty and was revered as a patriarch during America's hippie movement. His inseparable friend Shide once traveled to Japan to spread the teachings and established 'Shide Temple' there. The two were considered eccentric and unrestrained, and in Buddhism, they were seen as incarnations of the Bodhisattvas Manjusri and Samantabhadra, thus becoming symbols of harmony among the people.
Later, Hanshan and Shide became deities overseeing marriage, known as the 'Joyous Gods of Harmony', and were granted the title 'Hehe Ersheng' by Emperor Yongzheng, with the alternative name 'Joyous Heaven and Earth'.
Hanshan Temple is the ancestral home of the Hehe culture, and today the temple houses the Hanshi Spring and Hanshi Hall. Hanshi Hall, located inside the Sutra Depository, is adorned with carvings on the roof ridge depicting the return from the journey to the West to obtain the true scriptures.
Here, the joyous Hehe Immortals are worshipped, with their bare chests and smiling faces. They embody the beauty of adulthood and inherit the virtues of Tai Bo, Zhong Yong, and Ji Zha, who thrice declined the throne, and are deeply revered by the people. 'If I am joyful, my troubles are few; the troubles of the world turn into joyous smiles.'
In the Wu region, there is a custom of ringing bells at midnight, known as 'Fenye Bell' or 'Dingye Bell'. The Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji, after failing the imperial examination and seeking to avoid the 'An Lushan Rebellion', traveled south along the Grand Canal. Due to the canal being blocked, he moored at Maple Bridge.
Hearing the midnight bell, his traveler's sorrow surged, and he wrote the timeless masterpiece 'Night Mooring at Maple Bridge', which was later included in the 'Complete Tang Poems' by Gao Zhongwu, becoming a household name.
Hanshan Temple faces east and west, with the ancient canal just outside the temple, likely for the convenience of boat passengers coming ashore to offer incense. The mountain gate bears the inscription 'Miaoli Zongfeng' written by the late Qing Jiangsu Governor Cheng Dequan.
Generations of literati have come here to recite poetry and inscribe words. The temple houses three stele pavilions displaying many famous calligraphic works by figures such as Yue Fei, Wang Gui, Shen Du, Tang Yin, Wen Zhengming, Yu Yue, Kang Youwei, Li Dazhao, Liu Haisu, Lian Zhan, and others. The poetry stele written by the great master of simplicity Yu Yue is considered a unique treasure of Hanshan Temple.
In front of the Mahavira Hall, there are two Chenglu platforms, covered with ginkgo leaves swept from the roof by the temple monks. The Chenglu platform was originally built by Emperor Wu of Han under the influence of an old Taoist, and later became a platform for offering food to the departed spirits.
The main hall features yellow walls and grey tiles, with a single-eave hipped-gable roof. The openwork ridge is adorned with a coiled dragon sculpture, with Ao fish ridge crests at both ends. The hanging and oblique ridges are made of openwork spliced tiles, with Vajra warriors standing at the ends of the hanging ridges.
The Buddha niche's backdrop in the Mahavira Hall is a stone carving of 'Hanshan and Shide' by Luo Pin, one of the 'Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou' from the Qing Dynasty.
The highest point within the temple is the Puming Pagoda. The Puming Pagoda is a Tang-style five-tiered wooden pagoda with flying eaves and upturned corners, solemn and robust. Each side has a door, with the plaque 'Puming Pagoda' hanging high above each door, inscribed by Zhao Puchu, Xie Xiaosi, Fei Xinwo, and Shen Peng.
In 1993, Monk Xingkong initiated the construction of the Hanshan Annex. Inside the Fan Yin Pavilion of the Hanshan Annex hangs 'China's First Dharma Bell', which is also the world's largest redwood bell tower. The bell weighs 108 tons, stands 8.6 meters tall, and is currently the largest Buddhist bell in the world.

1. Humble Administrator's Garden
The Humble Administrator's Garden is a famous garden in Suzhou, centered around water, with winding paths leading to ingeniously arranged rockeries and exquisite courtyard buildings, lush with flowers and trees. This paradigm of gardens in the Jiangnan area, along with Beijing's Summer Palace, Chengde's Mountain Resort, and Suzhou's Lingering Garden, is known as one of the 'Four Famous Gardens of China' and has been included in the list of World Cultural Heritage.
2. Hanshan Temple
Hanshan Temple is located in the western suburbs of Suzhou and has a history of over 1,400 years. It is famous worldwide for the line 'At midnight, the sound of the temple's bell reaches the guest's boat' from the poem 'Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night' by the Tang Dynasty poet Zhang Ji. Hanshan Temple is a renowned place for praying for blessings, with a constant stream of believers ringing the bell and offering incense to pray for peace every day.

The Twin Bridges, depicted by the painter Chen Yifei, portray the gentleness of the 'small bridges and flowing water' of the town. The South Lake on the south side of the town is open and beautiful. When the lights are on at night in Zhouzhuang, it presents a different kind of charm.

Shanghai-Suzhou-Zhejiang Parent-Child Travel Nanny-Level Guide Part Two—Suzhou (2 Days)
Take the high-speed train from Shanghai to Suzhou. There are many trains, and it takes about 30 minutes to get to Suzhou, which is very convenient.
Stay: It is recommended to stay near Pingjiang Road in Suzhou, which is close to the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove, Suzhou Museum, and Humble Administrator's Garden Bus Station. You can walk to these places. We booked a hotel on Pingjiang Road.
Day One: Humble Administrator's Garden, Hanshan Temple, Shantang Street
After arriving in Suzhou in the morning, go straight to eat. We found a local Suzhou restaurant near the hotel and had squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, osmanthus sugar lotus roots...
🌟 In the afternoon, walk to the Humble Administrator's Garden (Suzhou Museum and Lion Grove are near the Humble Administrator's Garden. Since we didn't want to get too tired, we only visited the Humble Administrator's Garden on the first day)—a representative work of Suzhou gardens. If you only want to visit one garden, the Humble Administrator's Garden is a good choice.
🌟 After leaving the Humble Administrator's Garden, head to Hanshan Temple. Hanshan Temple doesn't burn incense in the afternoon, just for a visit. We saw the Maple Bridge and the stele of the poem 'Mooring by Maple Bridge at Night'...
🌟 Shantang Street is not far from Hanshan Temple. After leaving Hanshan Temple, you can go to Shantang Street. The night view of Shantang Street is more beautiful than during the day, so it is recommended to go at night and take a rocking boat tour on Shantang River to experience the charm of small bridges and flowing water.
Day Two: Suzhou Museum, Lion Grove, Pingjiang Road
🌟 Sleep in the morning and then visit the Suzhou Museum designed by master I.M. Pei. There is a special area designed for children where they can learn the basics of calligraphy and painting.
At noon, we found a restaurant where we could listen to Pingtan, a form of musical storytelling. Eating while listening to Pingtan has a unique charm.
🌟 In the afternoon, visit Lion Grove. It is a paradise for boys, full of rockeries. Each rockery is like a maze, and playing is so much fun. The baby climbed each rockery several times until I was too tired to let him stop.
🌟 In the evening, stroll along Pingjiang Road. Pingjiang Road is an old historical street in Suzhou, a small path along the river, which is named Pingjiang River. Walking along Pingjiang Road and snacking—sweet soups, small dumplings, plum blossom cakes, and crabapple cakes are all good choices.

Real-life Dream of Splendor‼️ The most comprehensive guide for two days and one night in Suzhou📝
1⃣️Qi Li Shantang Street is really crowded
But the sunset and night views are truly beautiful!
Taking a ride on a Wupeng boat is really romantic~✨
2⃣️There are so many delicious foods on Pingjiang Road!
You can't finish walking down the road in half an hour, it's all about eating and drinking😁
(There's also Guanqian Street, which I personally think every city has a similar central street, more or less the same)
3⃣️I love Hanshan Temple, it's so beautiful~
It's not inferior to the neighboring Lingyin Temple (remember to buy incense in advance at the entrance, it's more cost-effective!)
The pond full of koi is really stunning♨️
In the morning, you can eat a famous bowl of vegetarian noodles nearby
4⃣️You can finish touring the Humble Administrator's Garden in about ten minutes (not 🆓)
It's not as amazing as I imagined
But it's still pretty good for taking photos
5⃣️Turns out, Suzhou Museum, Humble Administrator's Garden, and Lion Grove are on the same route
You can plan to finish them in half a day
You need to book the museum one week in advance! (The picture is of the main museum, the West Museum can be booked one day in advance)
But the museum is really, really, really beautiful and photogenic!
The area selling souvenirs is also worth a long visit! Lots of desirable items~
6⃣️You can no longer queue for the old man's name paintings on Pingjiang Road🤣! Too scary!
Families, come early to reserve😭 The spot is right at the entrance
7⃣️Hotel, we chose Hotel Indigo, the standard room is 400 per person
The city skyline is perfectly unobstructed! Absolutely!
8⃣️Hot springs♨️
If you have enough time, you can drive to Wang Yan Hot Springs
I heard it's the largest outdoor hot spring in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, and it's really fun!
And there's a pool full of little yellow ducks! So fun you won't want to leave!
🍧🍡🧁🍤🥤🍵
Food category:
1. For the 'Crab Three Treasures', you need to reserve two and a half hours to be able to eat
(You can queue up first and then have enough time to visit Pingjiang Road and the Humble Administrator's Garden)
2. There's no real need to buy the siu mai from Dongguan Shangdian
Took a 40-minute ride to check it out, not amazing at all
3. The three stores of 'Tea Color Misty Rain' are all on Pingjiang Road, but they are extremely crowded
The photos are indeed beautiful, but the trash cans are full of unfinished milk tea, you know what I mean!
4. 'Overlord Tea Ji' is quite popular, but it's really good
'Little Tea Color Delight' is truly 👍
5. The six-grid puzzle dish, called 'Xin Mei Hua', is frequented by locals, delicious!

۸₅₆₮﹠Lingering Garden:
Although it's not large, this classical private garden is very exquisite. In autumn, the golden ginkgo trees in the garden are intertwined with the surrounding buildings, which is unique.(((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))
⭐Dinghui Temple:
This is a free temple, the autumn scenery is quite charming. There are two large ginkgo trees at the entrance, the scenery is very artistic.ヽ(`・Д・`)ノ It's just like a work of art!

This is one of the four major red maple viewing spots in China, the red leaves decorate the entire scenic area like a fairy tale world, it's too shocking!(✿◡‿◡)
✨Yi Garden:
Although it's not large, the scenery is surprisingly beautiful. In autumn, the ginkgo trees, maple leaves, and buildings in the garden form a unique landscape.◻‿◻ <(•̀ᴗ•́)و ̑̑
☺Xiyuan Temple:
This is one of my favorite temples, there are free incense sticks to pick up in the temple, and you can also eat vegetarian meals, copy scriptures, taste tea, and pray for blessings. The Arhat Hall in the temple is said to be super spiritual for drawing lots, it's worth a visit~(ó∀ ó)/
When you come to Suzhou, of course you have to taste the local food! The vegetarian noodles in Xiyuan Temple are super delicious, I have tried it myself, it's really super delicious howl)^O^.

Five recommended check-in places in Suzhou without pitfalls
1, Pingjiang Road
A Pingjiang Road, half of the Suzhou city🍃
Pingjiang Historical and Cultural Block is a miniature of the ancient city of Suzhou with white walls and green tiles, small bridges and flowing water, old-style houses.. It is the style of the Jiangnan water town. The favorite place to go to Suzhou is Pingjiang Road. It is very convenient to arrive, near the subway entrance. The unique Suzhou-style architecture is full of Jiangnan atmosphere.
2, Hanshan Temple
'Outside the Suzhou city is Hanshan Temple, the bell rings at midnight to the guest ship'
(Came to the place in the poem) Choose a good weather to come to Hanshan Temple, blue sky and white clouds, yellow walls and green trees, don't take too many pictures. I heard that the koi in Hanshan Temple is very spiritual, come and touch the koi's head, don't worry about everything
3, Guanqian Street
There are too many delicious foods on Guanqian Street!
It takes half an hour to walk a road, all eat and drink. Guanqian Street is recommended to go, there are many people and many foods~ You won't be hungry here haha! The pedestrian street is in the shape of a well
4, Xiyuan Temple
The biggest feeling of Xiyuan Temple is calm🍃
Compared with it, there are not many people who come early to eat vegetarian noodles and vegetarian buns. There are many local people but they don't need to queue. When you come to Xiyuan Temple, you will be given 3 incense for free when you enter the door. The temple administrator will say that you will burn incense first and then come to touch the cat. However, this small temple is really worth a visit. It is a combination of a temple and a garden. It has the characteristics of Suzhou gardens and the quietness of the temple.
5, Eslite Bookstore
Although the Eslite Bookstore is called this name, it is actually a shopping mall-like existence. There are bookstores, catering, shops in the building, selling some toy children's clothing, the clothes look good and the price is very suitable, very good shopping, there are three floors, one floor is a music album, Jay Chou's album is really very complete. One floor is cultural and creative products, all kinds of cute peripherals are hard not to be moved, and there is a floor of books! There are best-selling rankings, and there are books of various types! Worth a visit!
