Tsuruga Castle is located in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima. This castle has been built since 1384. The red colored roof tiles are the signature of this castle. The castle can be conveniently reached from Aizu-Wakamatsu station. We went here as a part of our 5-day Tohoku trip. We purchased the JR East Tohoku Pass that cost us 20,000. We were there during the winter, so it was a bit too cold. But the scenery was so beautiful. We chose to rent a car (Nippon Rent-a-Car), driving from Narita to Aizu and staying there for four days. Then we moved to Saitama to end the trip. During our stay in Aizu, we drove around the region, and it was fun. This might be the best Japan trip we have ever had. On a note, going to a remote area like this, you really need a car. Moving around by bus would make you too exhausted to enjoy it.

This hot spring inn was founded 1300 years ago at the birthplace of Aizu Higashiyama Onsen, and has been in business for over 140 years This is the hot spring that Shosuke Obara, famous for the song "Why did you ruin your life?", continued to visit. The actual stone bath he used was also on display. While bathing in the open-air bath, you can see the magnificent waterfall up close, and just watching it makes you feel refreshed. Because it was raining, we weren't able to fully enjoy the private hot spring, but the water quality was good, and there were various services available.
