This afternoon, I passed by Gwanggyo Park and visited the Suwon Museum's "Suwon's Old Clan" special exhibition, where I discovered the depth of local roots! The huge family tree wall at the entrance caught my eye. The branching process of the Hwaseong Lee clan, spread out under the lights, was impressive, like a tributary of a river. In particular, the family register document from the 1700s was so old that the paper had turned brown, but the writing was still clear, which was amazing!
📌 Points for solo travelers
Recommended experience: Making your own family motto → Writing with calligraphy on traditional Korean paper (20 minutes, 5,000 won)
Hidden spot: "Family's Room" on the 2nd floor → Gyeonggi-do family cultural heritage exhibition hall with few visitors
Recommended snack: Museum cafe "Jongga's Tea" (7,000 won) → Traditional tea set of noble families
🚨 Notes
Family motto experience ends at 4:35 p.m. (need time to clean up the brush)
The stairs on the 2nd floor are steep, so it is recommended to use the elevator
Tea may be sold out as it is made on the day
I came to understand the historical context connected to the construction of Hwaseong Fortress by King Jeongjo while looking at the Jeonju Lee clan records! I wrote 'Ongojishin' on a hanging scroll-shaped family motto (7,000 won) made in the experience zone, but the handwriting was crooked, so it was a little disappointing. There's nothing I can do about it.. The change in residence by family name at the end of the exhibition hall shows how the distribution of family names in the Suwon area has changed from the Joseon Dynasty to the present. It showed vividly what had changed haha
