Seto Inland Sea Bike Tour
DAY 57:
Remember yesterday I mentioned that the stone wall used to build Osaka Castle came from Shodoshima? Today, when I looked out from the Kankakei Observatory, I realized that Shodoshima is a very famous rock climbing site. Many rock climbing experts come here to compete and exchange ideas. Kankakei is one of the three most beautiful valleys in Japan and a famous scenic spot in the Setonaikai National Park. Here you can enjoy the fresh green of spring, the deep green of summer, the red leaves of autumn, and the snowy scenery of winter, and you can also overlook the Seto Inland Sea; the various strange rocks are also a must-see attraction. These are rocks formed by volcanic activity 13 million years ago. After years of crustal movement and weathering erosion, they have formed a geologically interesting landscape.
The Shipozhi Observatory is located in the center of Shodoshima. It is the only plateau on the island, with an altitude of about 777 meters. It offers a 360-degree panoramic view with a radius of 60 kilometers. Since ancient times, it has been described as "the view of the seven cities, eighteen states, one hundred islands and six high mountains"! On clear days, you can see the Seto Inland Sea, including the Great Seto Bridge and the Onaruto Bridge that connect Honshu and Shikoku.
In the Shodoshima Monkey Kingdom in the Choshi Valley, more than 500 wild monkeys live freely. The monkey group is divided into two groups, A and B, each with its own leader, and they live peacefully in their own territory. It costs ¥100 to feed the monkeys here and you have to lock yourself in a cage first. Because the monkeys here are all wild, they probably think that the people in the cage will feed them, so as soon as they see someone coming in, the monkeys start to gather around and the food in their hands will be eaten up in an instant.
Finally, let me introduce the huge Guanyin statue located in the "Main Temple Shodoshima Daikannon Buddha Tooth Temple". It won the first place in the "ARC International Art Grand Prix" in France, and is therefore known as the most beautiful Guanyin statue in the world. You can pay ¥500 to enter and worship it, and at the same time climb up to the head of the Guanyin statue to enjoy the scenery.
