[2025 Kamakura Attraction] Travel Guide for Grave of Minamoto Yoritomo (Updated May)

[Kamakura and Kanagawa] Kamakura was the center of Japan's first shogunate, and is the main reason I came here. The Kamakura shogunate existed for about 150 years, a period known as the Kamakura period. The Kamakura shogunate was established by Minamoto no Yoritomo, the head of the Minamoto clan, and later evolved into a samurai government centered around Hojo Tokimasa, Hojo Yoshitoki, and others. During the Kamakura period, Japan was once again influenced by the culture of the Song dynasty in China, and Buddhism once again received a lot of new input and independent development (as mentioned earlier). A large number of Song dynasty coins have also been found in Kamakura. Kamakura also retains a large number of historical sites, such as the tomb of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the valley where the last shogun Hojo Takatoki committed seppuku, and a large number of Buddhist temples. The entire city of Kamakura is very quiet, and I really like it. In addition, Kanagawa's most famous beaches are also in the Kamakura area. Kamakura was a must-pass place on the way to Tokyo during the Edo period, and a large number of tribute bearers and caravans would pass through here. Many of Katsushika Hokusai's ukiyo-e paintings are of the Kamakura area. Kamakura has also left an indelible mark in modern times. For example, the classic scene of a monster appearing in Ultraman was filmed in Kamakura; and the train station and intersection from Slam Dunk, which always has many pilgrims. Enoshima in Kanagawa was originally a good place to see Mount Fuji, but unfortunately the weather was not ideal. The bulletin board is full of small advertisements.

In Kamakura City, Japan, I had the honor of visiting the Tomb of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the resting place of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, which has profound historical and cultural significance. I took thirteen photos to record this historic visit. The tomb of Minamoto no Yoritomo is located in the quiet mountains, surrounded by lush trees, giving people a solemn and peaceful feeling. Walking on the stone steps leading to the cemetery, I felt the solemnity and tranquility here. The cemetery itself is simple and solemn, blending harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape and showcasing traditional Japanese aesthetics. During the visit, I learned about Minamoto no Yoritomo's life and his historical contributions, which gave me a deeper understanding and respect for Japanese history. There are also many related historical sites and interpretive signs around the cemetery, detailing Minamoto no Yoritomo's deeds and his influence. This visit to the tomb of Minamoto no Yoritomo not only made me feel the profoundness of Japanese history, but also allowed me to experience the inheritance and respect of culture. Beyond Shirahata Shrine, which is associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo, lies his grave at the top of a long flight of stone steps. It was built in 1779 by Shimazu Shigehide, the lord of the Satsuma domain. The stone tower was moved from Shochojuin Temple. Apart from Yoritomo's grave, the place is spacious but actually quite bleak.
