This impressive golden-roofed building stands out in Male's skyline and has become a landmark in the city. This is the largest mosque in the Maldives. Historical Background The Friday Grand Mosque was developed in 1984 with the assistance of the Gulf countries, Pakistan, Brunei and Malaysia. Its architecture is unpretentious, with the exterior built in white marble, almost undecorated. As you sail into Male Bay, you can see its golden dome shining in the sun. Visiting Instructions Visits to the Friday Grand Mosque are between 9am and 5pm, and outside of prayer time. Before noon and 2-3 pm are good times to visit. Casually dressed visitors are not allowed in, men must wear long trousers and women must wear long skirts or formal attire. Interiors The main prayer hall inside the mosque can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers and has beautifully carved wood side panels and doors, a specially woven carpet and impressive chandeliers.
