Travel Together Season 16 - Gansu-Qinghai-Ningxia Road Trip (20) Labrang Monastery, the Tibetan Academy of the World Linxia, Gannan, Gansu Sep 15, 2023 Cloudy, 5–25°C, max altitude 3,235 m. If you yearn for it, tomorrow will be a whole new world. This is the case every day on a road trip. Head to the next stop in the morning. Follow the winding Zheda Highway along the Liujiaxia Reservoir, with the "Blue Yellow River" accompanying you. There is a viewing platform on each side of the Liujiaxia Bridge. The local Dongxiang County government has thoughtfully built relatively complete facilities to make it easy for road trippers to take photos and rest here (Figures 1–2). Arrive at the Ganjia Secret Land in Xiahe County before noon. It is the most complete and mysterious sacred site preserved in Gannan Prefecture. After passing through 26 km of grassland roads, you will arrive at Ganjia, a place with diverse natural and cultural landscapes. There are few tourists here, and the villages are desolate. The unique geological structure contains various geological resources such as cliffs, grasslands, stone forests, and canyons. Bajiao City is located on a platform at the confluence of two rivers on the Ganjia Grassland. There is no consensus in academia on when this octagonal ancient city was built. The ancient city is actually a hollow cross-shaped city. Because there is a city pier at each corner of the hollow cross, forming eight protruding corners, the city is named after this (Figure 3). It is now called Bajiao Village, and there are residents living here. On the west side of Bajiao City is Baishiya Monastery, a Gelug monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. The abbot is Gönrikhang Rinpoche, one of the three reincarnated female living Buddhas in the Tibetan area, and the lineage has been passed down for six generations. Behind the monastery is the towering Baishiya. The cliff is not pure white. It is named Baishiya because it contrasts with the green. It is like a white jade screen, rising from the ground and hanging in mid-air (Figure 4, Baishiya Monastery in the foreground, Baishiya in the background). It is estimated that this place will soon be fenced off and developed into a new scenic area. Visit the second scenic area, Labrang Monastery, in the afternoon. Labrang Monastery (4A) is one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is the most famous Tibetan esoteric academy in the world and has the most complete Tibetan Buddhist teaching system in China (Figure 5). The monastery is large in scale, with magnificent monastery buildings (Figures 6–8), countless huge Buddha statues, and various exquisite sculptures, murals, ritual implements, etc. The main hall is resplendent and magnificent, and the monks' quarters are simple and tidy. There is an ultra-long prayer wheel corridor in the monastery, which is rare in the world, with a total of more than 2,000 prayer wheels. It is said that it takes nearly an hour to turn every prayer wheel (Figure 9). Stay overnight in Xiahe County. Continue to visit Gannan tomorrow.

I did some travel guide before coming to Gannan, and it seemed that the Gangga Secret Realm was not mysterious, so I was not looking forward to it. But when you climb up and look around, you will be a little surprised by the vastness and remoteness, the pristine ecology, and the ancient city of Baguao, which is both ancient and mysterious. Walking further in, the white stone cliff is towering into the clouds, the river valley below the cliff is wide, the water is gurgling, and the entrance of the cave is 30 meters high and embedded in the stone cliff. Going further, it becomes even more secluded and peaceful. Apart from the ten of us tourists, there is no one else. The vast wilderness is all light green. There is a small village on the hillside in the distance, and a group of horses are grazing leisurely... Looking around 360 degrees, it seems as if you have traveled to another world. There is no modern atmosphere at all, everything is natural and born. It is rare to see such a pure and primitive scenic spot, so don't "develop" it! Tips: Vehicles with less than 5 seats can drive into the scenic area. Our 7-seater car can only transfer to the scenic shuttle bus, but there are very few scenic shuttle buses, and the waiting time is very anxious.
