Futang Ancient Street is a historical and cultural attraction in Yiwu with unique charm. Here is a detailed introduction:
1. History:
- The history of Futang Ancient Street can be traced back to the Song Dynasty, when a market had already formed here. The town was named after Guangfu Temple, which enshrined Guanyin Bodhisattva. By the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Futang had reached its peak, with more than 200 shops of all sizes, attracting merchants from all over the country.
2. Architectural Style:
- The buildings on the ancient street are mainly from the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, featuring a full-wood mortise and tenon structure, unique local wood carving, brick carving, and stone carving crafts, and exquisite carving decorations and patterns.

Yiwu Fotang Ancient Town
Yiwu Fotang Ancient Town is a thousand-year-old town named after Buddha, thriving because of water, and flourishing due to commerce. It is known as one of the four major ancient towns in Zhejiang, along with Wuzhen, Xitang, and Nanxun.
There is a beautiful legend about the origin of Fotang Ancient Town. It is said that more than 1500 years ago, the eminent monk Bodhidharma traveled to Shuanglin Temple in Yiwu and encountered a flood in the Yiwu River. To save the people, he threw a chime into the river, which transformed into a ferry, rescuing the people trapped by the flood. In gratitude for Bodhidharma's benevolent act, the locals built the Duqing Temple at the site where the chime was thrown. The temple has a couplet that reads, 'The Buddha's light shines through the ages, the hall's candles illuminate all directions,' hence the name 'Fotang' (Buddha Hall).
Fotang Ancient Town was built along the Yiwu River, showcasing a grand aspect with its large river, big bridges, and bustling commercial ports, embodying the elegance of a 'great lady.' Historical records indicate that from the Ming and Qing dynasties, countless merchant ships traveled along the Yiwu River, making Fotang Ancient Town a renowned center of commercial activity, often referred to as the old Yiwu International Trade City.
The soul of the ancient town is a 2-kilometer-long old street, witnessing the commercial prosperity of Fotang Ancient Town. Additionally, the Wanshan Bridge is an important landmark of Fotang Ancient Town. This floating bridge was first built in the early years of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, lying across the Yiwu River, with the bridgehead becoming a dock. Subsequently, more than ten docks, including 'Dog Market Dock' and 'Pig Market Dock,' were built along the Yiwu River, making Fotang one of the 'four major towns' in Zhejiang due to its commercial prosperity.
Today, although the busy scenes of boats on the Yiwu River are no longer visible, Fotang Ancient Town still retains its unique charm. Its long history and culture, along with its beautiful natural scenery, continue to attract countless tourists to visit and experience.

Reverse Tourism Yiwu—3
☁️ The ancient town is located to the southwest of Yiwu's urban area, a 20-minute drive from the city center. Most of the ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River have the style of 'small bridge, flowing water, and family' which is like 'a small piece of jade', while Fotang ancient town shows its grandeur with big rivers, big bridges, and ports, displaying the elegance of 'a lady of a big family'. It is precisely because of its unique style that it has a place among the many famous towns and ancient villages in Zhejiang.
💧 When I first stepped into Fotang ancient town, the sight that greeted me was eye-opening. The ancient residences with white walls, black tiles, and horse-head walls formed a stark contrast with the modern city. The change was so sudden that it caught me off guard, and I felt an irresistible urge to explore it further.
☀️ The entire ancient town is built along the Yiwu River, with a bridge that combines Chinese and Western styles connecting the two banks of the river. According to historical records, since the Ming and Qing dynasties, countless merchant ships have traveled on the Yiwu River. In Fotang, there was a pontoon dock, which was not only an important stop for ships on the river but also an important port for commerce.
⭐️ Thanks to the convenient water transportation on the Yiwu River, trade in ancient Fotang was very prosperous, making it a well-known center for commercial activities far and wide. Some people called it the Yiwu International Trade City of the old times. During the Republic of China period, it was even listed as one of the 'four major towns in eastern Zhejiang', which shows its prosperity at that time.
🌈 The soul of Fotang ancient town is undoubtedly its 2-kilometer-long old street. Although it no longer has its former glory, when you walk into it, you can still catch a glimpse of its prosperous past from the dazzling array of window lattices, bull legs, brick carvings, and stone carvings on the ancient residential buildings.
☁️ Shang Lu A Zhong Wontons
The wontons are freshly wrapped in a drawer. I ordered the fresh meat small wontons. The filling is very solid, and the wonton skin has the aroma of alkaline noodles. The soup base is also quite tasty. I was torn between Mitte and Ni Sa Er, but in the end, I chose this one with a higher rating.
I ordered the boss's recommended beef butter cake with chicken curry and masala crispy balls, which tasted just as good as the Indian restaurant I used to love crazily in the Nepalese restaurant.
🌟Leifeng Juice
This chain has several branches, so if you want to go, you can search the map to see which one is on the way. Highly recommend the mango milkshake! The milk flavor is very rich, the taste leans towards the texture of cheese, it's delicious but not thirst-quenching, and it has a strong sense of fullness.
☁️BEYTI Restaurant
I searched for a long time for reviews of Beyti and Sultan. When I saw someone say that the waiters at Beyti restaurant were tall and handsome, I decisively chose this one!
I ordered rice pudding which tasted like melted small pudding ice cream, and there was also free black tea which tasted a bit bitter.

CAPTURING THE HISTORY OF FOTANG ANCIENT TOWN
Fotang Ancient Town or Fotangzhen as known in Chinese is one of the four most ancient towns in Zhejiang. It has a reputation of being a thousand year old town, a commercial port and also a holy place for Buddhism.
Strolling around this town gives you a feeling of going back to hundred years back. Although most of the ancient houses has been transform into commercial shoplots, apparently there are still some older generations who still lives there. The houses and buildings are very well maintained to preserve their authenticity.
You can also noticed some activities around like young ladies taking opportunity to dressed up in traditional costumes and have a makeover done for photography sessions. Older generations will gather together for some Chinese chess, mahjong or poker card session. It was quite an eye opening as such activities we can only see on TV if we are a foreigner.
No entrance fee for this town and it's opened till midnight. Ohya, remember to bring a powerbank as your mobile phone will be busy capturing photos 😉

DREAMY NIGHT SCENERY AT FOTANG ANCIENT TOWN
The night scenery was unexpectedly breathtaking at this ancient town, which has the historical story of 300 years old. We arrived in the afternoon and had a wonderful time exploring the town during the day time. Then we decided to explore the local foods just right across the street. After the dinner, and when we walked out and were surprised to discover another kind of feeling the ancient town has to give.
The night scenery are just both dreamy and breathtaking. As we decided to strolled thru the town again, we discovered more activities at night, where younger locals and families came out to spend time together. Activities like karaoke, public square dancing, pets dressed up, young ladies dressing up in traditional costumes for photography, and of course not forgetting the various choices of foods and snacks to choose.
There are also lighting performance which is really amazing. The whole town was made so lively.
Remember to bring a power bank as you will taking a whole lots of photos here!

Jinhua Fota Ancient Town | Wandering through the city known for bartering chicken feathers for sugar candies
Location: Fota Ancient Town
🚖Transportation: Self-driving | Taxi | Bus
🅿️Parking: Free
I took the bus to Xinshiji Station and started exploring from the end of the old street
📸Fota Old Street
The main street is very commercial and not very long.
Initially, this street was nothing special to me, but as I turned a corner, a scene I once saw in a dream suddenly popped into my mind.
The location and arrangement of that shop were exactly the same as what I had seen in my dream; it felt quite fateful to encounter the shop I had dreamed of in Fota Ancient Town.
The alleys on both sides of the main street are worth exploring; you might discover something more interesting, and they still retain the flavor of the old street compared to the main street.
📸Food
🥡Fota Qianzhang Noodles
These noodles are really good, truly living up to everyone's high recommendations.
🥡Wudi's Sister-in-law's Sweet Fermented Rice
Way too sweet~ Not friendly for sisters who prefer their milk tea with less sugar or no sugar, but the taste is not bad. If you don't like sweet, then forget about it.
🥡Fota Baked Flatbread
I happened to catch a fresh batch out of the oven; it's very crispy, tastes average, you can try one, but eating too much can be a bit greasy, it has a meat filling with a bit too much fat.
📸Puchuan Water Street
Coming out from the main street, next to it is Puchuan Water Street.
Strolling leisurely along the river, there are Hui-style buildings, also a kind of antique charm. I visited in the afternoon, but I heard that the scenery is even more beautiful at night. If you have time, you can stay until evening to enjoy.
📸Fuhu Bridge
Walking on the small bridge feels quite nice; the different boat numbers marked on the right side of the boat heads represent those boats from the past.
Whether looking from above down or taking pictures at level, this bridge is very photogenic.
If you happen to be in Yiwu, and happen to be not far from Fota Ancient Town, and happen to want to experience the ancient town, and happen to have good weather, then it's just right to set off.

Yiwu Two-Day One-Night Guide, Jiming Pavilion, Fotang Ancient Town
Yiwu Two-Day One-Night Guide, Jiming Pavilion, Fotang Ancient Town, Old Train Station 1970 Cultural and Creative Park, Santing Road Night Market
:Depart from Hangzhou, about 0.5 hours, with high-speed train station and airport. p2~4 Jiming Pavilion: Located in Jiming Mountain Park, Jiming Pavilion is a good place to appreciate Dongyang wood carving art. Climbing the mountain is very convenient, it is recommended to go in the afternoon to evening, so you can see the daytime scenery and night view, and taking contrast photos is quite interesting. From the top of Jiming Pavilion, you can overlook the entire Yiwu. It is also a great spot for taking Hanfu photos, and when we went there, we even encountered people shooting videos for selling goods, and got brainwashed several times.
Red p5~8 Fotang Ancient Town: It's a bit far from Yiwu city center, about 0.5 hours by taxi. Fotang has always been a trading port, and the ancient town perfectly blends the grandeur of Huizhou architecture with the finesse of Zhejiang carvings. Overall, it has an antique charm and is not overly developed. Besides the local snacks which are quite special, other purchases are not highly recommended.
p9~13 Old Train Station 1970 Cultural and Creative Park: It's a great place for photography, quite artistic, with some small shops, cafes, bookstores, a rainbow track, and graffiti walls. It's nice to walk around when the weather is good, and it seems to be a popular spot for families with children.
p14: Santing Road Night Market, also known as Binwang Night Market. There are snacks, small commodities, and clothes for sale. The snacks are similar to other night markets, but small commodities and crafts can be bought here, as most of the Yiwu Small Commodities City does not retail. Bargaining doesn't seem to make a big difference, so you can buy when the price reaches your psychological limit.
1o Notes on food have been updated in another article. √ Small tips: The lights of Jiming Pavilion are on from 18:30 to 21:30, but sometimes there are delays. When we went, it was a bit late, and they also turn off the lights. After the lights are on, waiting until it's completely dark to take photos is even more beautiful.
