Turpan | I only recommend these two destinations (including a one-day tour strategy)
North of Xinjiang is Altay
Where the wild mountain breeze blows
South of Xinjiang is Kashgar
Where the exotic human warmth settles
And in Turpan to the east of Tianshan Mountains
Lies an underestimated civilization and scenery
Desert, Gobi, canyon, village...
Here hides more unknown past and mystery
If you are considering Turpan as your travel destination
Then I definitely won't recommend you to visit the Flaming Mountains
Instead, I recommend you to visit this millennium-old village—Mazha Village
🚄 Transportation tips: Depart from Urumqi in the morning, take a high-speed train or train, one hour by high-speed train, two hours by train, and you will arrive at the beautiful Turpan North Station! After exiting the station, carpooling services are readily available, with a day trip carpool costing about 100 yuan. Want more freedom? Charter a car for 300-400 yuan, or take a dedicated route bus.
🎫 Ticket: 30r/person
🚗 Parking: Free
📷 Recommended photo spots
✅ The Grand Mosque
Considered a landmark here, not open to the public, but has an exotic feel
✅ Maimaiti's Yard
A folk store with unique handicrafts, great for taking photos
✅ Hoca Mausoleum
Also known as the Saint's Tomb, it is said to have a history of over 1300 years
✅ Parking lot
You can capture the entire village landscape, a good spot for photography
Mazha Village is suitable for a leisurely stroll
It's a niche attraction in Turpan that I personally think is worth visiting
🚘1⃣️ Day tour route
Urumqi——Turpan——Flaming Mountains——Mazha Village——Kumtag Desert——Shanshan——Urumqi
🎈Turpan city has attractions like the Karez Wells (Ticket: 40r/person), Mummy Museum (Ticket: Free), etc., which I personally find average
🎈Flaming Mountains (Ticket: 40r/person) are not recommended for buying tickets, just check-in and take photos outside, the Thousand Buddha Caves behind the mountains (Ticket: 40r/person) feel more worth it, with more photogenic scenery!
🎈Kumtag Desert (Ticket: 30r/person) is the only desert in the world connected to a city, personally I think it's quite good for taking photos, you can experience off-road vehicles (160r/person) which is quite thrilling
🎈Urumqi——Turpan——Shanshan all have direct high-speed trains, transportation is very convenient
🎈Turpan day trip carpool is about 100r/person, we chartered a car, about 300 per person, for your reference
🎈The temperature is quite high, remember to protect yourself from the sun
Food Section
🥘 Suleiman Mixed Noodles —— Authentic Turpan flavor
Suleiman Mixed Noodles opposite the museum, both pilaf and barbecue are very delicious, and the baked buns next door are also a must-try delicacy. 🥟
🍧 Yogurt Shaved Ice —— Coolness of summer
On the streets of Turpan, you can see yogurt shaved ice carts everywhere, with a price of 5 yuan per cup which is very affordable. The real yogurt shaved ice has a pure taste and is an excellent summer refreshment. If you don't like it too sweet, you can ask the boss to put less honey and more yogurt, sweet and sour, for a better taste. 🥤
👗 Dressing advice: The climate in Turpan is variable, it is recommended to wear light and comfortable clothing, and it is strongly recommended to bring a hat and sunglasses, which can not only protect from the sun but also take beautiful photos!
RUBY HARVEY
Being in the second deepest depression point, the temperature itself is referred as the Turpan depression here. Turpan is "the" hottest place in China and it derived it's name from the Turpan volcano which once flowed here a long ago. As we started to thinking about the Xinjiang expedition, the first place came to my mind is Turpan. Although back in home was also hot, even I couldn't bear this heat. Also in the history of China, this land has been ruled by many kingdoms and it has seen so many wars. For a while, I just questioned myself whether I'm in Mars or Earth; such is the effect of this landscape. Be prepared for a sweating tour guys #urbanexplorer #leaveyourmark #xinjiangtravel

Popularised by the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, the Flaming Mountains near Turpan - in Xinjiang province - are renowned for their fiery red appearance.⠀
⠀
During the day, under the blazing sunlight, the mountains glow and seemingly burn, with hot air swirling into the air - implying the notion that they are, indeed, on fire. During the summer months, the Flaming Mountains become the hottest place in China, and not even a single blade of grass dares to grow.⠀

As a classic recollection of the Journey to the West, the Flame Mountain naturally has the elements of Journey to the West. The door logo is a sculpture with a shape like a flame. The sun is standing on the tip of the tongue, and the banana fan is still on the shoulder. From the door, visitors are quickly substituted into the Journey to the West. There is also a sculpture on the pillars along the way, with the shape of the palm of the Buddha's hand. There is a image of Sun Wukong in each palm. This is actually not difficult to understand. Borrowing the opening of the Journey to the West, Sun Wukong can't escape the story of the palm of his hand. Its so wonderful, its very special! The ticket for
Flame Mountain is 40 yuan per person. After the ticket is purchased in turn, the oncoming is a promenade. This gallery is also very memorable and distinctive. First of all, the ceiling is shaped like a blue sky, and it feels very attentive. However, the most classic is that there are dozens of stone carvings on either side of the gallery. These paintings are the stories of each chapter in the Journey to the West. Although not every chapter has been shown, basically the most classic ones are left on the wall. From Wuzhishan to rescue Wukong, to return to the ninety-nine, a corridor is a Journey to the West. Many people will slow down here and slowly recall the stories that accompany us to grow up.
From the lobby, it is a sunken mini-square with a logo of the Flame Mountain View. This is a thermometer for measuring the temperature of the earth's surface. It is made of a gold hoop. There is also a sculpture of Sun Wukong next to it, looking at the stick, as if it is "bigger, bigger." Very representative. Listening to the staff, the hottest time of the year, the surface temperature in the Turpan area can reach 80-90 degrees, and the sand is buried in the egg for half an hour. Because the terrain is a basin, and the annual precipitation is very small, the weather is hot, the name of the flame mountain is born.
Going to the ground, there are 3 sculptures that are familiar to tourists. They are the figure of the four figures of Emperor Tang and the masters of the Flame Mountain, the statue of the demon king and the statue of the iron fan. These are places where tourists are keen to take photos, and they are very popular!
Finally, I will share some dry goods for you. Because I just arrived at the Flame Mountain, I heard the peers say that the Flame Mountain can't fly the drone. It was hit down last year, and we are also shocked. But in the end, by asking the locals and actual combat, I would like to summarize the following. The Flame Mountain Scenic Area is definitely not flying. If it is flying, it must be stopped. If it is, it will be violently defeated. But the flame mountain can fly! ! The mountain behind the Flame Mountain and a mountain next to it form a canyon where you can take off successfully. But please be careful not to fly over the hill to the scenic spot. If the violation is broken, it should be deserved. Taking off in the back mountain, you can also enjoy the magnificent scenery of the Flame Mountain, and there are canyons to accompany, the scenery is more charming. So here we are dedicated to the most exclusive flame mountain aerial photography tips, we must pay attention!

Flaming Mountains Scenic Area travel route!
I just came back from Turpan last week, and I would like to share my travel route and tips.
I chose a one-day tour for CNY 96, including transportation but excluding scenic area tickets. You can choose the attractions you want to visit.
Itinerary/Attractions:
1) Flaming Mountains Scenic Area - Back Mountain of Flaming Mountains (Ticket: CNY 30)
The filming location of Journey to the West. You can see the banana leaf fan thermometer outside the front mountain scenic area. I didn't buy a ticket to visit the scenic area. I just took some photos at the exit of the back mountain scenic area. I think the background on both sides of the road is more photogenic.
2) Tuyugou Mazha Village (Ticket: CNY 30)
A mysterious and exotic Uyghur village with a history of thousands of years. The village is not big, so you can take a walk in the ancient alleys.
3) Lunch
The driver recommended a local restaurant with affordable prices and good taste. The special cold noodles with yellow sauce are CNY 3 per plate, sour and delicious, and the lamb skewers are CNY 4 each.
4) Tuyugou Grand Canyon (Free to pass by the highway)
5) Kumtag Desert (Ticket: CNY 30, half price for Hunan residents)
It is recommended to bring a pair of shoe covers. They are CNY 10 per pair at the entrance and CNY 15 in the scenic area. The desert in the scenic area is average. If you drive by yourself, you can go to a desert with fewer people and no tickets. It is recommended to bring a coat in the evening when the temperature drops.

Xinjiang Turpan travel guide.
🚗Self-driving main line: Hami-Turpan
Crossing the sea road, enter the east gate and exit through the north gate, and then drive 300+km to Turpan.
👍Travel route
day1: Shanshan-Tuyugou-Jiaohe Ancient City
day2: Grandpa Antique Shop-Grape Valley-Flaming Mountain
Traveling from Hami to Turpan, passing through Shanshan as a transit and rest point, passing through Tuyugou + Flame Mountain to reach Turpan City
Tips: You can play while visiting/leaving the Flame Mountain. The main thing is to avoid taking the wrong path.
📍Tuyugou 10:00-19:30 💰Ticket 29 yuan, shuttle bus 10 yuan
It’s a small village with quite folk customs, and it’s great for taking photos.
Before arriving, we drove through a grand canyon, and the cantaloupe on the observation deck was 7 yuan each! one! Jujujujutian is the most delicious one in Xinjiang
📍Jiaohe Old Town 9:30-19:00 💰Ancient Village + Old Town + Shuttle Bus 117 Yuan
I randomly bought a package ticket at the entrance of the scenic spot. After playing it, I think it is enough to go to the ancient city alone. If you bring children, you can experience both. There is a folk museum in the ancient village which is more lively.
The sunset is beautiful in the evening, and the lights and Tang music on the night tour create a unique atmosphere.
📍Grandpa Antique Shop 💰10 yuan
Real-life version of "Howl's Moving Castle", the old objects inside will bring back some childhood memories
When we go there during the National Day, it says on the board that we will move after the National Day, so don’t miss it~
📍Grape Valley 9:00-19:30 💰83 yuan
"Grape Valley" in the primary school Chinese textbook finally got what I saw
It's very big inside, and the scenery along the way is beautiful. There are 3 or 4 scenic spots, and it feels like it's worth the price. July and August are the seasons for fresh grapes. In October, there are only some scattered grapes hanging on the vines.
📍Flaming Mountain 8:30-20:00 💰40 yuan
Due to time constraints, I only took photos and checked in at the door. The banana fan can be taken in the parking lot, and the thermometer is inside the scenic spot.
Pictures 13-15 are the mountains behind the Flame Mountain. If you want to make a film, you can check in and navigate directly to the "Grape Valley Folk Crafts Heritage Area" here.

1. Wander around by yourself without spending extra money.
2. Take a helicopter ride for around 3 minutes - expensive but if it is what you want to experience then GO FOR IT! 😊
3. Ride a jeep or a buggy- there are a lot of four wheels vehicles there that you can rent for a limited time.
4. Take an aeroplane- Same as the helicopter
5. Ride a donkey, a horse or a camel- the price really depends on how long will you be riding them.
The scenic area where you can take all your photos is not massive at all so you can stay here as quick or as long as you like.
I like the museum before you enter the scenic area. I really appreciated that. You will learned about the scholars who walked on the silk road and did some notable jobs during their time. The story of the Journey to the West is very interesting.
Ticket price: 40 rmb ( not including all the activities inside)

Flaming Mountain: A Journey to the West Comes Alive
#chinatrip
As a fan of the classic tale Journey to the West, I was thrilled to visit the infamous Flaming Mountain, a pivotal setting in the legendary story. This scorching hotspot, infamous for its sweltering temperatures reaching up to 80°C in summer, was once the obstacle course for Sun Wukong, Pigsy, Sandy, and Tang Sanzang on their quest for Buddhist Scriptures.
I couldn't resist snapping a photo with the giant thermometer, a testament to the extreme heat. The villainous Fan Princess's legacy lives on, her iron fan still fanning the flames in my imagination.
Fortunately, our final destination, Grape Valley, offered a refreshing respite. This serene gated community, nestled amidst lush vineyards, boasted crisp, cool air and a crystal-clear stream flowing with snowmelt from nearby mountains. A perfect conclusion to our Flaming Mountain adventure!

Travel Notes of Flaming Mountain Scenic Area
The Flaming Mountain Scenic Area is famous for its association with the classic Chinese novel 'Journey to the West'. It is the filming location where Tang Sanzang and his three disciples crossed the 800-mile Flaming Mountain. Therefore, many attractions related to 'Journey to the West' have been built here.
After parking, you will pass through a square and then enter an underground palace, which is different from other scenic spots as it is built underground. After that, you will pass through a cultural corridor of 'Journey to the West', which features stories and illustrations from the chapters of the novel. If you look closely, you will find some typos in these stories! You can play a game of spotting the mistakes!
After passing through the corridor, you will see a large sand table that gives you a direct understanding of the terrain of Flaming Mountain and the four small villages around it. On the wall behind, there is an introduction to the origin of the heat of Flaming Mountain, its history, and an overview of Turpan.
After coming out, you will see the iconic building of the Flaming Mountain Scenic Area, a giant thermometer resembling the Golden Cudgel. I just went there yesterday, and it was 60°C, not too high, but it can reach up to 80°C. Many people line up here to take photos.
When you go upstairs, there are some bronze statues to check out, such as the statues of Bull Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, and the zero-altitude marker. There is little shade upstairs, and the temperature is high, with heat waves hitting you, so be sure to protect yourself from the sun and heatstroke.
The Flaming Mountain Scenic Area is not very large, and given the heat, you won't stay long. One hour is enough. If you have time, you can visit the back mountain. There is a shuttle bus to take you there. The back mountain has some buildings that are great for photos, including Mantou Mountain in the distance, the red mountain opposite, and some 'Journey to the West' themed buildings.
Finally, the temperature in the Flaming Mountain Scenic Area has been very high recently, so be sure to protect yourself from the heat and sun. Have a great time!

Walking in the Desert Turpan Flaming Mountains
The Kumutage Desert in Shanshan County, adjacent to the famous Turpan Flaming Mountains, creates an extreme and unique natural environment. Walking through it, despite the magnificent scenery, the high temperatures cause a significant rise in perceived temperature, making one deeply feel an indescribable heat. Notably, with each step, fine sand particles quietly invade the shoes, accumulating into piles, adding a bit of difficulty and challenge to this desert journey. Therefore, while enjoying the magnificent natural scenery, it is also necessary to be fully prepared to cope with the unique challenges of the desert environment.

Xinjiang·Turpan | The ancient road is long, the oasis remains
| The ancient road is long, the oasis remains. Xinjiang Turpan
An ancient yet young city
As an important town on the ancient Silk Road
A thousand years ago, the sound of camel bells was melodious, and merchants were endless
Now high-speed trains pass through the city, and planes come and go frequently
A modern city is rising
Here is the Flaming Mountain from 'Journey to the West'
Through the interpretation of the TV series 'Journey to the West'
Turpan's Flaming Mountain is almost a household name
It has become an important tourist card of the local area
The Flaming Mountain is one of the branches of the Tianshan Mountains
The horizontal movement of the crust has left countless folds
After wind erosion and rain stripping
Formed the undulating mountains and crisscrossing ravines of the Flaming Mountain
Because of the Flaming Mountain
Turpan is also known as the 'Land of Fire'
The special geographical conditions create the 'furnace effect'
There is a saying locally
'You can bake bread on the stones and bury eggs in the sand to cook them'
The 'Land of Fire' also has a cool place
There is an oasis in the canyon on the west side of the Flaming Mountain
Named Grape Valley because of its rich grape production
Now it has become a national 5A-level tourist attraction
Nearly a hundred kinds of grapes are planted in Grape Valley
It is a natural grape museum
Every summer
The Flaming Mountain is scorching hot, and no grass grows
In Grape Valley, the water flows gently, and the trees are shaded
It is the cool world of 'Land of Fire' Turpan

Xinjiang is worth checking in countless times
After many years, I have come to the beautiful Xinjiang once again. The summer in Yili is as beautiful as Hayao Miyazaki's animations, frame by frame, step by step, all so touching. This time, a 7-day trip was arranged, which was enjoyable, free, and happy.
DAY1: Urumqi—Turpan—Kumtag Desert
Coming to Turpan to feel the hottest sun, the uniform red brick and mud buildings, the cultural streets with strong Western Region style, eating the sweetest watermelons in Turpan in summer, running freely in the desert, the fine soft sand, leaving footprints with every step, the stacked sand sea in the distance, the blue sky, and the intermittent small green plants in the sand sea complement each other, creating a picturesque scene.
DAY2: Turpan—Flaming Mountains—Shihezi
1. The story of Journey to the West has accompanied me since childhood. Visiting the scenic spot, I personally experienced every scene in the drama, so real and yet so dreamy. I never thought that one day I could be so immersed in the scenes of the master and disciples' journey to the West from TV dramas and storybooks, fulfilling a small childhood dream.
2. I've heard of Shihezi University, and this is my first visit to Shihezi, a lively city with a sense of life. By chance, I arrived on June 1st, and had some beer with friends at yue pub, listened to the live singing, and spent a special Children's Day together. The happiness among friends is just that simple.
DAY3: Turpan—Duku Highway—Tangbula Fairy Lake
1. Lucky baby, I caught up with the opening of the Duku Highway. This year, Duku opened early, and I was shocked by the natural landscapes along the way. The Duku Highway is indeed a masterpiece of nature, and the martyrs sacrificed their wisdom and hardworking hands to fully present this natural magic and beauty for us to stop and admire, inspiring awe.
2. Tangbula Fairy Lake, my friends rode horses up the mountain, and we caught a small hailstorm, which was a unique experience in life.
DAY4: Narat—Valley Grassland—Sky Grassland
Driving into the scenic area was really cool. The valley grassland of Narat is so beautiful, with snow-capped mountains, forests, grasslands, blue sky, and sunshine—all the good elements of travel gathered in one day. Cattle, sheep, and horses running freely, nature showed us a series of vivid and dreamy paintings, the green grassland, the snow-capped mountains with unthawed snow on the distant peaks shining in the sunlight, showing their beauty. Under the sunset glow, the freely running horses were so unrestrained and handsome. At this moment, I felt that this trip was worth it, and I was happy.
DAY5: Narat—Kazanqi—Six-Star Street
The blue of Kazanqi is its unique signature, the healing blue. Taking photos against the blue walls and red and blue windows, super photogenic. Of course, what surprised me even more was Six-Star Street, with lots of delicious food. Different from Kazanqi, its windows and walls are blue, green, and red, with more colorful and diverse colors, making it more suitable for checking in and taking photos.
DAY6: Sayram Lake
The last tear of the Atlantic, a dazzling pearl, the azure blue lake water, driving on the road of Sayram Lake, I exclaimed how beautiful it was. The colorful words of this world are not enough to praise it. It is so pure and beautiful, like a dignified and calm lady, like a cute and exquisite girl, like an elder quietly telling stories about it, peaceful and beautiful, loved and cherished.
DAY7: Anjihai Grand Canyon
The fractured canyon area still deeply shocked me. This place is suitable for drone photography to capture the grandeur of the canyon.
Just like that, the 7-day journey covered only a small part of Xinjiang. The last time I came to Yili, I also visited Kanas and Bayinbuluk, with the same surprises that remain in my mind and heart. I really love this land so much.
Xinjiang is truly worth checking in countless times. Its beauty needs every stopping person to experience and feel with their heart. The distance is far, but it's worth it.

Flame Mountain in Brief
The famous Flame Mountain was formed about 14.1 billion years ago, during the lateral movement of the Earth's crust, leaving behind countless fold belts and the effects of natural wind erosion and rain erosion, creating the undulating terrain and crisscrossing ravines of the Flame Mountain. It is located on the northern edge of the Turpan Basin, on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road. The main peak is over 830 meters above sea level. Here, not a blade of grass grows, and birds are nowhere to be seen. In the scorching summer, the red sun hangs high in the sky, and the reddish-brown mountain body glows under the blazing sun, with the hot air tumbling and rising, resembling roaring flames and licking tongues of fire. The entire mountain range looks like a burning flame, with tongues of fire licking the sky, presenting the grandeur and magnificence of nature.
Wu Cheng'en's 'Journey to the West', which tells the story of Tang Sanzang and his disciples' pilgrimage to the Western Heaven for scriptures, became widely popular. In chapters fifty-nine and sixty, the story of 'Tang Sanzang's journey being blocked by the Flame Mountain, Sun Wukong adjusting the banana fan three times' adds a layer of mystery to the Flame Mountain. The temperature of Flame Mountain is extremely high, reaching up to 70 degrees, and eggs can even be cooked in the sand pits. However, in the valleys of Flame Mountain, there is shade from the greenery, babbling streams, and the fragrance of melons and fruits. The natural landscape and historical and cultural heritage of Flame Mountain are astonishing, making it a dazzling pearl on the ancient Silk Road.

Experiencing the Flame Mountain firsthand, its reputation is well-deserved; without a banana fan, it's really tough to endure
Some say
At the end of the world, there lies the entrance to paradise
But the world has no end
And we have never seen such an entrance
Fortunately, the universe favors this planet
Leaving mankind a place
Called Xinjiang
The legendary Flame Mountain. 🌋
With temperatures over forty degrees, scorching sun, evaporation, suffocation.
The highest temperature I've ever experienced in my life, minutes away from heatstroke.
It turns out the ground color at 48°+ is truly flame red Journey to the West didn't lie to me!! Without a banana fan, one can only be slowly evaporated...
On the road, I saw local Xinjiang aunties and uncles burying themselves up to their waists in mud under the Flame Mountain; we thought our eyes were deceiving us, but upon asking, they said it was to treat rheumatism Another wave of amazement❗NB, forgive me for even finding breathing difficult
Turpan, with hardly any decent rainfall throughout the year, aside from a few seasonal rivers, there are no other water sources here. Yet, this place is abundant with grapes, Hami melons, and other fruits. Where does the water come from? The water comes from the underground 'Karez' wells. Since the Han dynasty, locals have been digging these underground water collection wells and channels, transporting snow and groundwater from afar to agricultural areas and villages. Today, the crisscrossing Karez wells extend over five thousand kilometers, turning the extremely arid Gobi desert into a lush oasis of fruits.
