Linxia was called Hezhou in ancient times. Hezhou was especially famous for "Bafang", so "Bafang" and "Hezhou" became the nicknames of Linxia at the same time. As early as the Tang Dynasty, merchants and religious figures from countries such as the Arabs and Persians traveled to Bafang for business and settled down. Gradually, eight temples and teaching houses were built, forming a settlement area where people "lived around temples and did business around houses", hence the name "Bafang", which contains the meanings of "teaching house" and "foreign house".
