📌Travel Tips📮
Be sure to wear sunscreen, as the altitude is high and the UV rays are strong💥!
Stay hydrated, as the climate is dry🥤 and the sun is long!
Altitude sickness is common. Don't take a shower on the first night, and don't exercise vigorously, or you'll be in trouble😖!
Shangri-La is a place to stroll around slowly. One day is too short to enjoy it. It is recommended to spend 2–3 days📅!

I visited several bars with live music in Shangri-La's old town, where the atmosphere was relaxed, and most of the singers had beautiful voices and performed wonderfully.
Nightlife in Shangri-La is more laid-back and culturally immersive than bustling city scenes. Centered around Dukezong Ancient Town, the evening offers cozy Tibetan-style bars and teahouses with live music, travelers gather to enjoy traditional music, dance, and storytelling.
Some venues host performances of Tibetan folk songs or dances, providing a glimpse into the local culture. For a more tranquil experience, visitors can take an evening stroll through the ancient town’s narrow streets, admiring the illuminated prayer wheels and temples. Transportation pitfall avoidance
1. If you choose to fly to Shangri-La, it is best to book your flight in advance, as flight prices may increase during peak season. Also, pay attention to the on-time rate of the flight to avoid delays affecting your itinerary.
2. There are many bus routes from Lijiang or Dali to Shangri-La, but be sure to choose a reputable bus company and avoid taking black cars. Black cars may have safety risks and opaque pricing, making it easy to be overcharged.
3. There are relatively few taxis in Shangri-La city, so it may be difficult to hail a taxi. Consider using a ride-hailing app or taking a bus. However, pay attention to the bus routes and operating hours to avoid delays in your itinerary.
Accommodation pitfall avoidance
1. Shangri-La has many hotels and guesthouses, but the quality varies. When choosing accommodation, don't just look at the price, but also consider the location, facilities and service of the hotel. It is best to choose a hotel near Dukezong Ancient Town or in a convenient location, as this will make it easier to get around.
2. Before booking a hotel, you can check other guests' reviews to get an idea of the actual situation. Also, pay attention to whether the hotel provides hot water, heating and other facilities, especially in winter, as these facilities are very important.
3. Some guesthouses may have false advertising, and the actual rooms may not match the pictures. Before booking, you can ask the guesthouse to provide real photos or videos of the rooms to get a better understanding of the room conditions.
Scenic spot pitfall avoidance
1. Inside Dukezong Ancient Town, there are many merchants selling various goods, such as souvenirs and handicrafts. Pay attention to the quality and price of the goods to avoid buying fake or inferior products or being overcharged.
2. The world's largest prayer wheel in Turtle Mountain Park requires multiple people to turn it. When turning the prayer wheel, pay attention to local religious customs and turn it clockwise, not counterclockwise.
3. Pudacuo National Park is large, so it is recommended to plan your itinerary in advance and allocate your time wisely. Also, pay attention to environmental protection and do not litter.
4. Songzanlin Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist temple. When visiting, please abide by the temple's regulations and respect local religious beliefs and cultural customs. Do not wear overly revealing clothing, and do not make loud noises or take photos inside the temple.
Food pitfall avoidance
1. Shangri-La's cuisine is mainly Tibetan-style, such as yak beef hotpot and butter tea. When choosing a restaurant, be sure to choose a reputable restaurant and avoid choosing roadside stalls or small restaurants to avoid food hygiene issues.
2. Yak beef is a specialty of Shangri-La, but it is relatively expensive. When buying yak beef, pay attention to distinguishing between real and fake, and avoid buying fake or inferior products.
3. Butter tea may have a special taste, and not everyone can accept it. When trying butter tea, you can start with a small amount to see if you like it. If you don't like it, you can choose other drinks.
Shopping pitfall avoidance
1. Shangri-La has many specialties, such as yak beef jerky, Tibetan carpets and Tibetan medicine. When buying specialties, be sure to choose a reputable store and avoid buying fake or inferior products.
2. Pay attention to the quality and price of the specialties, and don't be misled by the merchant's false advertising. You can compare prices at multiple stores and choose products with good value for money.
3. When buying Tibetan medicine, choose carefully and preferably under the guidance of a professional. Also, note that Tibetan medicine can be expensive, so don't easily believe the merchant's low-price promotions.
In summary, when traveling to Shangri-La, it is important to plan ahead and understand the local situation to avoid falling into various pitfalls. I hope the above guide will be helpful to you and allow you to have a pleasant journey in Shangri-La.

If you can't go to Xinjiang, then head to Shangri-La's Napahai!
Navigation🧭 Napahai (Yila Grassland) Depart from Shangri-La to Napahai, passing through Songzanlin Monastery on the way, where there is an observation deck to take in the full view of the monastery.
There is a lakeside road around Napahai, following which you can enjoy the stunning scenery where half is the sea and half is the grassland.
Clothing Rental👔
It is suggested to rent the clothes in the Dukezong Ancient Town of Shangri-La before heading to Napahai, as the variety of clothes will be more complete and the makeup will be more exquisite than at Napahai. The price is also in the range of 80-110, including makeup and props for travel photography.
There are many grasslands in Napahai, and there are many places to ride horses🐎, with different prices. During our lake tour, we stopped at a white pagoda to inquire and were quoted 180 per person for 30 minutes, which we decided to skip. Later, we continued on and stopped at a temporary tourist parking spot, where after bargaining, the price was 80 per person, and the scenery along the way felt like the best. It is recommended that friends look around more and be sure to bargain. The approximate playtime should be around 3 to 5 hours. It is suggested to return to Dukezong Ancient Town for accommodation at night.
Precautions⚠️
There is no food available in the scenic area, so it is advised to bring your own dry food and water. The ultraviolet rays are very strong, remember to apply sunscreen. The sun🌞 is really very intense!
The altitude is a bit high, so it is possible to carry an oxygen bottle as a backup.
There are many vehicles on the lakeside road and parked by the roadside, be careful! Drive safely.
Since you can't go to Xinjiang, why not take a series of grassland photos at Napahai.
Photo Strategy📷
There are many horses🐎 and cows🐮 on the grassland, which are recommended as backgrounds.
Make appropriate use of ethnic props.
Ethnic clothing rental is essential to set the right atmosphere.
Of course, good photos also need a good photographer.

Seamless Shangri-La Tour - Comprehensive Nanny-level Guide
🚄 Transportation
The high-speed train departs from Lijiang at 8 am, and with only a 49 yuan ticket, you can seamlessly reach Shangri-La. After leaving the station, take the No. 1 bus (2 yuan fare) directly to the north gate of Dukezong Ancient City, seamlessly connecting your journey.
🏠 Accommodation
Choose to stay near the south or north gate of Dukezong Ancient City, not only is it convenient for transportation, but it is also close to Songzanlin Temple and Napahai, making your trip easier. Remember, don't choose a hotel in the center of the ancient city, dragging luggage on the slate road is not an easy task.
👗 Tibetan Costume Rental Experience
There are many shops in the ancient city that rent Tibetan clothes. Choose the style you like, it is recommended to book in advance the night before, so there are more choices, and go directly to the store the next day to create your Tibetan style! The off-season price is 68 yuan per day, remember to bring your own false eyelashes, they will not be provided for free here.
🏰 Dukezong Ancient City
Want to take a photo in front of the world's largest prayer wheel? Then go to Turtle Mountain Park during the day, the photo effect at night is not so ideal. At 7:30 in the evening, the Guozhuang dance begins on time at the Sifang Square (remember to search for 'Sifang Square', not 'Sifang Street'), don't miss this cultural feast.
🕊️ Songzanlin Temple
Online tickets are only available in packages (90 yuan), but you can actually bring your ID card to the offline window, only buy tickets (55 yuan) and the uphill bus (10 yuan), which can save 25 yuan. After the tour, take the No. 3 bus directly from the temple gate back to the ancient city. Don't believe those people who take you to Napahai for 10 yuan at the gate, they might take you to a private horse farm and let you ride a horse to consume.
🌊 Napahai
Napahai and Yila Prairie are the same place, but the name changes with the seasons. The lake tour is highly recommended for self-driving. Napahai is a free attraction, no tickets are needed, navigate to 'Ring Lake Road', play clockwise, and the scenery is beautiful all the way. But be aware that the water road can only be experienced during the summer flood season. The average price for renting an electric car around the lake is 80 yuan, remember to ask clearly about the battery life and whether it can go around Napahai. The wind in Napahai in December is very strong, remember to wear a hat and keep warm. Want to hold a lamb for a photo? That costs about 20 yuan. Want to ride a horse? Remember to bargain! Route A is 160 yuan, Route B is 128 yuan, and the horse riding project in the scenic area is no longer open after 18:00.
🌿 Pudacuo
You must go to Pudacuo early, otherwise there really isn't enough time. From entering the scenic area to leaving the scenic area, it is recommended to reserve 4 hours. The scenic area bus takes about 20 minutes to Shudu Lake, and the return trip needs to gather 25 people before it can leave. Now there are not many people in the off-season, but the scenic area closes at 4 pm. Shudu Lake has a 3.3km walk, Bita Lake has a 2km walk, and wearing sports shoes is the wisest choice.
🏔️ Meili Snow Mountain
November to March of the following year is the best season to watch Meili Snow Mountain. Choose a hotel near Feilai Temple for accommodation. From Shangri-La Station, there are direct buses to Deqin-Feilai Temple on the roadside, the fare is 80 yuan, very convenient. After watching the sunrise over the golden mountain of Meili, those who like hiking can take a bus to Yubeng next to Feilai Temple, and those who are obsessed with glaciers can go to Mingyong Glacier.
🏞️ Balagezong
I personally do not recommend going to Balagezong, the tickets are expensive, the transportation is inconvenient, and the cost performance is not high.
🍴 Shangri-La Restaurant Recommendation
Ama's butter tea, Shunshun Snacks, Caisheng Restaurant, Jingjing's Mani Stone, these restaurants are all the taste of Shangri-La, not to be missed.
Take this guide and make your Shangri-La trip as comfortable as at home, enjoying every beautiful moment!🎉🎉🎉

Dukezong Ancient City in Shangri-La City - A castle built on a rock
Dukezong Ancient City is located in Shangri-La City, Yunnan Province. It is a city with a history of more than 1300 years and is the best preserved and largest Tibetan residential group in China.
During the Tang Yifeng and Diaolu period (AD 676-679), the Tubo set up a fortress on the top of the Big Turtle Mountain here, named "Dukezong", a Tibetan pronunciation contains two meanings, one is "castle built on a rock", and the other is "moonlight city". The later ancient city was built around the fortress on the top of the mountain.
Dukezong Ancient City is the oldest castle on the Ancient Tea-Horse Road. For the horse teams crossing the Ancient Tea-Horse Road, Dukezong Ancient City is a key town on the Ancient Tea-Horse Road and the first stop after the horse teams enter Tibet. This is a quite comfortable journey.
Main attractions:
1. Sifang Street, which has always been the thoroughfare for the tea-horse trade between Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet, is now a commercialized tourist ancient street.
2. At the end of the ancient city is the Moonlight Square, where the bronze horse team on the square seems to remind us of the horse team that was walking in the past, reminding people of the glorious history of Dukezong.
3. The small hill on the east side of Moonlight Square is Turtle Mountain Park, which does not require a ticket. Climbing up the park to look out, you can see the endless snow-capped mountains, overlooking Shangri-La City, all in sight, no high-rise buildings, but see the smoke curling up, the sparkling Qinglongtan. The bright sunshine, pure blue sky and white clouds, solemn Dafo Temple, and golden prayer wheel form a moving picture.
From Moonlight Square, you can climb up to the Han Temple. If you turn around from left to right, you will come to the world's largest prayer wheel. Looking up, the entire prayer wheel is five stories high, majestic and spectacular. The body of the drum is pure copper and gold-plated. On the upper end of the drum wall, the four great bodhisattvas, Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Guanyin, and Ksitigarbha, are carved in relief. The eight treasures of Buddhism are carved on the lower end, and the drum contains sutras, mantras, and various Buddhist treasures. Each turn is equivalent to chanting the Buddha's name 1.24 million times. If you turn three times, you can pray for disaster relief, good luck and happiness.
tips:
1. There is a parking lot at the entrance of the ancient city gate. It is not recommended to park. It is still a kilometer walk to Turtle Mountain Park. It is best to park in the underground garage on the left side of Moonlight Square, and you will reach the main attractions in a few steps.
2. The altitude here is high, prepare warm clothes in advance before traveling. To prevent altitude sickness, you can take Rhodiola a week in advance, and also prepare a portable oxygen bottle.
3. Stick to low-carbon and environmentally friendly travel and protect the living environment.

It takes as little as 1 hour and 18 minutes to get from Lijiang to Shangri-La, and as little as 4 hours and 30 minutes to get from Kunming to Shangri-La, which will effectively reduce the cost of travel for tourists.

The Traveling Epicure
Shangri-La Moonlight City, the ancient town of Dukezong that has crossed a thousand years
Traveling across most of China to Shangri-La, I went to see the ancient city of Dukezong as soon as I put down my luggage at the hotel. This ancient city, which has a history of more than 1300 years, was once a key town on the ancient Tea Horse Road, and is now a pedestrian street, with a dazzling array of local specialties, monks holding prayer beads, and girls taking photos in Tibetan costumes.
The name Dukezong comes from the fact that during the Tang Dynasty, the Tubo Dynasty set up a fortress here and named it Dukezong, which in Tibetan is poetically translated as Moonlight City or Castle Built on Stone.
The ancient city is not crowded in the off-season, so you can stroll around leisurely, go to Turtle Mountain Park to see the large prayer wheel, climb the stairs until you're out of breath, stop to rest, feel the faint scent of Tibetan incense in the wind, and listen to the Tibetans singing ballads. At this moment, the feeling of being in a foreign land surrounds me from all sides.
⭐Turning the big prayer wheel three times brings good luck. This is the largest prayer wheel in the world, standing 21.45 meters high, with 1.24 million mantras and true words inside, and the exterior is engraved with images of snow-capped mountains, rivers, forests, the traditional Tibetan eight auspicious symbols, national unity, and famous sayings of great people.
From the observation deck, you can overlook the entire ancient city, with the clear gray roofs layering into the distance, and the distant mountains have already entered deep autumn.

The moonlight of the ancient city of Dukezong
Morning is the most beautiful moment of the day, and the ancient city of Dukezong shows its truest side under the morning sun. Let's feel the uniqueness of this ancient city together!
Coming to the ancient city of Dukezong in the early morning, it seems to be in a time and space unrelated to business. The streets are quiet and peaceful, giving people a sense of comfort in returning to the original.
I like to stroll in the early morning, walking in the alleys of the ancient city. Each alley has a different style.
The architectural style of Dukezong Ancient City is unique and exquisite. The morning sun shines on the buildings, reflecting charming colors. These characteristic buildings are dotted in the corners of the ancient city, making people yearn for it.
The morning light is soft and warm, giving each photo a unique charm. Walking on the street, taking those beautiful moments, and recording the beautiful memories of the trip.
The ancient city of Dukezong not only has beautiful buildings, but also a rich and colorful culture, feeling the strong ethnic style. The ancient city of Dukezong in the early morning does not have the hustle and bustle of business, but instead is a quiet and free atmosphere. Here, you can let your imagination run wild and feel the tranquility and peace of mind.

Yak Yoghurt in DuKeZong
#wintergetaway #china #shangrila
We have seen many Ancient towns on our trip in Yunnan so far but this one is a little special. In DuKeZong you can really feel the Tibetan culture.
From the mud and wood houses to the largest prayer wheel in the world (it took more than 15 of us to get it spinning!) the thing you can feel most here is the culture.
Be sure to have some yak hotpot and yoghurt while you’re here!

Amazing Tibetan art of needle and silk thread
🤷♀️ What: Exhibition of Tibetan Embroidery art
🌐: Dukezong Old Town, Shangri-la
🎟️Entrance: Free
🖼️🏷️: from about 60 yuan to lets just say a lot
Artist level: From amateur to Grandmaster
Motives: Tibetan, ☸️🕉️ Buddhist, ⬅️Western
How'd we get there?
We stumbled upon this wonderful event by accident. Luckily a kind English speaking guide gave us a complete tour of the exhibition and introduced us to the displayed artwork explaining the history and significance of the motives and illustrations. So if you want to know more, he's probably a better source of information than yours truly but I'll try.
Mostly, the works display buddhist motives( from mandalas to Guanyin, the goddess of mercy and Gautama Siddhartha himself), but you can also spot some western ones as well( Van Gogh for example). Other elements include landscapes, animals and every-day people.
What is embroidery art? 🪡🧵🖼️
The most basic description of embroidery is the art of using a needle and thread to decorate fabric. You can look at it as stitching traditional culture into light fabric. Tibetan needlework uses silk threads specifically.
This is in no way a skill one can develop overnight. It takes years, nay decades to develop and perfect the arts.
Tibetan embroidery tradition has been passed down and developed for hungered of years and the profound needlework displayed at the gallery is hard to put into words.
Amazing:
What's really amazing about this exhibition is that, not only does it present the work of some of the best artists in the field, but also helps enthusiastic amateurs gain and boost confidence by promoting their work.
💲🧵🖼️You can buy handcrafts from local craftsmen, teenagers, housewives and elderly who are just looking to put their work at display.
The precise technique of the details on more advanced work is mind blowing. So much that from a certain distance it's easy to mistakenly confuse the handcraft with a regular painting.
📍You can visit the Tibetan Embroidery Academy at the Dukezong old town l, next to the famous Defu Prayer Wheel.

Olive Bistro Excellent Western Food
Address - Shangri-la Old Town near popular dancing square.
Ambiance/Facilities - The restaurant is very clean with large windows overlooking the street below, with well arranged seating.
Like most of Shangri-la they open late. If wanting breakfast early tell them the night before and they'll open. Owner speaks English.
Highlights - The food is western and provides the best selection and quality in town. The breakfast is superb with large portions at reasonable prices, typically 36 RMB, extras such as eggs, bacon, sausage for 8 RMB, if not already included in your meal selection.
The burgers and pizza are also great choices and of western standard at good prices ranging from 50 to 60 RMB. They have vegetation options as well including hummus, salads, and others.
Eaten here many times in my multiple visits to Shangri-la and never been disappointed.
Avg. Price per Person - 60 RMB with food and drink for breakfasts, around 90 RMB for lunch or dinner items.
Rating - 5 of 5

Getting lost in Ancient streets
It is almost impossible to walk around in this beautiful ancient street in Shangri-La without feeling the culture come to life. From the small detail in the street, to the small details in the art and food - this place is heaven on earth! I have a whole new appreciation for art and culture after seeing this beautiful ancient town in Shangri-La.

Shangrila: A Gem in Yunnan Province!
Shangrila is a pretty unique place and I think it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re able to make it.
It’s recommended to hire a private driver from Lijiang to get there, but I’m a bit of a cheapskate so I bought a bus ticket for 45 RMB instead and endured the 7 hour ride with a few strangers 😅
While Shangrila is a stunning place, keep in mind the very high altitude! I had a major case of altitude sickness while there that came with a bit of fatigue for a couple of days.
The second picture is from the 100 Chicken Temple, which is aptly named as absurd as it is because there are loads of chickens walking around. It’s one of Shangrila’s more hidden sites as it’s located high above the town. Once up here, you can get a bird’s eye view of all the houses in Shangrila. The best part is that there are rarely tourists over here so it’s an extremely peaceful site 😌😌
