The Democracy Monument is an iconic building in Bangkok. It is located near Khao San Road in the city center and is surrounded by a transportation hub. The monument is built on a roundabout in the middle of the road. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to the monument from Khao San Road or Jinshan Temple. This is the meeting place for many street parades and rallies in Bangkok. The Origin of the Monument The Democracy Monument was built to commemorate the democratic coup that took place on June 24, 1932. The coup overthrew the absolute monarchy and established a democratic system of constitutional monarchy, so the monument is called "Democracy Monument". Well-conceived design The monument is well-conceived, the distance between the buildings and the design both symbolize different meanings. There is a fortress-style building in the middle, with pillars shaped like wings on each side. The height of the columns and the fortress-style buildings are 24 meters away, symbolizing the 24th day of the coup. There are relief decorations under each column, and the reliefs are engraved with a series of activities of the KMT's coup d'etat at that time. Symbolism The fortress-style building is hexahedral, and each side is decorated with a sword, which symbolizes the six coup programs of the Democratic Party, namely independence, stability, equality, freedom, economy, and education. The height of the plate is 3 meters, symbolizing that the coup occurred in March of the old calendar. It takes about half an hour to visit the monument, and then you can go to Jinshan Temple or Khao San Road, both of which only take about 10 minutes to walk.
