The Dazu Rock Carvings are the largest grotto group in southern China and the only World Cultural Heritage site in Chongqing! #MainlandChina Attractions Located in Chongqing, the Great Stone Foot Carving is a cliff stone carving from the late Tang and early Song periods, based on Buddhist scriptures. This time I joined the local local tour, because it was cheap enough for around 240 including a meal. It takes 2-3 hours by car, and 10 minutes by electric car to get to the scenic spot. The tour guide said that it was so hidden that it was not destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. When I entered the petroglyphs scenic area, I saw some of the petroglyphs melted and broken, but fortunately I did my homework and explained with the tour guide. If you are traveling by car it is best to do your homework, because it is difficult to feel the value of history by looking at the appearance alone. Zhao Zhifeng, a first-generation monk, spent more than 70 years carving more than 10,000 Buddha statues on a stone wall of more than 500 meters. The best-preserved thousand-handed Buddha statue is like a peacock spreading its tail. If you look closely, they are all different. It is a wonderful flower in the world's grotto craftsmanship. The last one is a pagoda of 1.8 meters and more than 800 kilograms dragged by Manjushri Bodhisattva, which has not fallen for 800 years, lamenting the exquisiteness of ancient architectural mechanics. Visited another world heritage site here in China! The Dazu Rock Carvings! 👏🏻🙌🏻 We joined a group tour to see this place and I was so glad we did because its worth it. We left the city centre at past 8am and arrived at the 1st stop at around 10. We saw some statues on top of this mountain then before 12noon we left for our lunch! We stopped at a small Chinese restaurant and our table was all set! We sat and ate with all the joiners of the tour! Then, we headed off to the gallery where we watched this amazing 3D movie-like intro of the place and it was just amazing! Afterwards, we went on to our last stop, hopped on an electric cart that took us to all these magnificent carvings you see in the pics. After the tour, I was able to see some souvenir stores and bought this owl made of craft materials. Before 5:00, we were back at the city and then just had a stroll around Hongyadong where we were dropped off. I loved how organized and well-guided our tour was, we paid 200rmb all-in! Dating back to the 9th century, the epic Buddhist rock carvings in Dazu will dazzle and astound. These towering historic carvings depict Taoism and Buddhist beliefs and doctrine. In China there are 4 main Buddhist grottoes: Mogao, Yungang, Longmen and Dazu. Located near Chongqing, the Dazu collection is the most preserved of the 4 as it escaped the destruction of the cultural revolution due to its isolated location. There are multiple sites in the Dazu area, but if you only have time for one (like we did) visit the main site of Baodingshan, which will take you almost 2 hours to walk around and see the epic carvings. Dazu is located approximately 1.5hours away from Chongqing (but will be longer if you visit on a public holiday and get stuck in traffic like we did). You can take a local bus, but we found it easier to hire a driver. #historicplaces

Shimenshan One of the five mountains of Dazu Rock Carvings Shimenshan in Dazu, much like the Tiefo Temple in southeastern Shanxi, was closed for decades, even locals hadn't been inside. Now it's finally open to the public, with over 400 statues, depicting immortals, Buddhas, ghosts, and gods, from wrathful deities to compassionate Bodhisattvas. It's known as the "pinnacle of Song Dynasty Taoist stone carvings." Cars can only park by the roadside. After passing a lotus pond and a bamboo forest, you'll see a small wooden house covered in vintage slogans. Only after passing through the moon gate can you finally behold its beauty. Last time, I asked who could have higher cultivation and greater fame than Master Daochuo? It's the Third Patriarch of the Pure Land School, who surpassed his master—the luminous Shandao. As the Pure Land School gained more fame and followers, Shandao became a living Bodhisattva. Unfortunately, he was later framed by Wu Zetian, who claimed to be the reincarnation of Maitreya. Since Wu Zetian was Maitreya, she must have seen Shandao of the Amitabha Pure Land as a thorn in her side.
