We left the city centre at past 8am and arrived at the 1st stop at around 10. We saw some statues on top of this mountain then before 12noon we left for our lunch! We stopped at a small Chinese restaurant and our table was all set! We sat and ate with all the joiners of the tour! Then, we headed off to the gallery where we watched this amazing 3D movie-like intro of the place and it was just amazing! Afterwards, we went on to our last stop, hopped on an electric cart that took us to all these magnificent carvings you see in the pics. After the tour, I was able to see some souvenir stores and bought this owl made of craft materials. Before 5:00, we were back at the city and then just had a stroll around Hongyadong where we were dropped off. I loved how organized and well-guided our tour was, we paid 200rmb all-in! Dating back to the 9th century, the epic Buddhist rock carvings in Dazu will dazzle and astound. These towering historic carvings depict Taoism and Buddhist beliefs and doctrine. In China there are 4 main Buddhist grottoes: Mogao, Yungang, Longmen and Dazu. Located near Chongqing, the Dazu collection is the most preserved of the 4 as it escaped the destruction of the cultural revolution due to its isolated location. There are multiple sites in the Dazu area, but if you only have time for one (like we did) visit the main site of Baodingshan, which will take you almost 2 hours to walk around and see the epic carvings. Dazu is located approximately 1.5hours away from Chongqing (but will be longer if you visit on a public holiday and get stuck in traffic like we did). You can take a local bus, but we found it easier to hire a driver. #historicplaces

The Dazu Rock Carvings, located in Dazu District, Chongqing, are outstanding representatives of late Chinese grotto art and a brilliant pearl in the history of world grotto art. It began in the early Tang Dynasty, went through the late Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, flourished in the two Song Dynasties, and was also added to during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is an art corridor carved over many dynasties. Baodingshan Rock Carvings are the essence of the Dazu Rock Carvings. The statues here are large in scale, with Dafowan as the core, and the niches are layered on the cliff walls that are one mile long. Each hand has an eye, with different postures, delicate and exquisite, as if telling the ancient story of the Buddhist kingdom. Walking among them, you can see the compassionate and peaceful Guanyin Bodhisattva and the vivid and interesting Arhats. Each statue seems to be endowed with a soul. The Nanshan Rock Carvings are mainly based on Taoist themes. They are the most exquisite and complete Taoist statues carved in the Song Dynasty in China. The Three Purities Cave and the Holy Mother Shrine fully demonstrate the breadth and depth of Taoist culture in their solemnity. The Shizhuan Mountain Grottoes integrate Confucian, Buddhist, and Taoist statues. Statues of Confucius and the Ten Philosophers, and statues of the Supreme Lord Lao and the Real Man are in the same cave, reflecting the cultural phenomenon of the integration of the three religions at that time. Day trip to Dazu, book for tickets by yourself through trip.com for baodingshan and beishan (baodingshan main site and shows more than enough for a day trip to be honest). Explore the place at your own pace and see the intricate carvings. It would take about 1hr to go through the site but 2-3h if you chill and explore at each point with slow pace. Head to Hongya cave at night and admire the night lights along the bridge and the Hongyadon buildings. It’s truly a magnificent sight and would make one wonder why Paris is called the city of light and not Chongqing. Spend about 2h to explore this with comfort, try some local food and head for a music bar atop the views.
