See Jaca's military history and unique views of the city
Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Huesca (Region)
Beautiful spot with panoramic views of the city of Jaca and the entrance to the Aragon Valley.
This now-abandoned military fortress was built in the late 19th century by order of Spanish monarch Alfonso XII to deter French invasion. This mountain is located in the Rapitan Mountains in the north of Jaca and we Jaca residents often climb it to get the best views of our city. The best time of year to see it is in winter or summer, when you can experience the best of each season. In winter, because you will be in a “chelé”, as we say in Jaca, and in summer, because you will feel the fresh breeze that comes from the north and blows through the valleys of Aragon. You can go up the mountain in two ways: by road or the traditional route through the mountains, and then for the brave, along the Camino de Ipas to Jaca. I usually choose the latter because it is the most exhausting, but the most beautiful. The distance between Jaca and Lapitán is about 5 km, so if you are a tourist and don’t want to get too tired, you can easily drive there from Jaca.
