2025 Onomichi Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in June)

Transportation: Take the train to JR Onomichi Station (Sanyo Main Line), then walk about 15 minutes to take the cable car uphill. Visit Time: June 2024 Onomichi is a small seaside town that might have once been a fishing village, but now it seems to have quite a bit of shipbuilding industry. Since it's not a major tourist hotspot, there aren't many people around. Occasionally, you might spot a few foreigners (noticeably non-Asian), and even the locals are sparse. To reach Senkoji Temple, you first need to pass through Hon-dori Shopping Street after leaving the station to take the cable car. Hon-dori Shopping Street has small alleys branching off on both sides—one side offers views of the railway, while the other side overlooks the port. The street has a somewhat Showa-era vibe, with buildings that are neither too new nor too old, and quite a few mixed-style structures combining Japanese and Western elements. The cable car runs every 15 minutes, with a small cabin. The ride is very short, lasting about three minutes, and it takes you to the cable car station at the top of the hill. From there, you can walk down the mountain along a small path. Along the way, there are signs with poems or verses, seemingly describing the scenery of Onomichi. As you descend, you'll arrive at Senkoji Temple, where you can hear the sound of wind chimes from afar. With the sea breeze and the chime sounds, it feels refreshingly cool. The entire temple is built on the mountainside, blending with the natural rocks at varying heights. One of Senkoji's famous sights is the bell tower "Kyo-on-ro" (Echo Tower), which has been selected by Japan's Ministry of the Environment as one of the "100 Soundscapes of Japan." However, you can't hear the bell being rung on-site, nor can you ring it yourself. The view from here is excellent, offering a bird's-eye view of the Onomichi Waterway and the distant Onomichi Bridge. The temple sells a wide variety of amulets, as well as numerous types of ema (wooden prayer plaques) and omikuji (fortune slips). There are also many different styles of omikuji to choose from.

Hiroshima, a town of slopes, sea, and cats 🐱 Unfortunately, since I visited in the middle of summer, I didn't see any cats during the day, but I heard there are many during cooler seasons 💕 My favorite town with a view of the sea. I spent about 4 hours taking the Senkoji Mountain Ropeway to the top, visiting Senkoji Temple, and walking down while taking photos 😊 (with a cafe break in between ☕️) On a sunny summer day, the view of the sea in the distance while descending the slopes and stairs was really wonderful ☺️ The view from the ropeway is in the 4th photo. The 5th photo is towards the Onomichi City Museum of Art 📸 The Seto Inland Sea could be seen far into the distance, and it was a spectacular view 🥹 If you want to see the cats, it might be better to visit during the cooler seasons 😊

The moment you step out of Onomichi Station, you're greeted by the sea breeze and the leisurely, romantic atmosphere of Onomichi. Unlike the tourist waves in Kyoto or Tokyo, I would say this is one of the best cities to relax your mind. Onomichi is also known as the City of Literature and has been the inspiration for many movies and art games. If you're a frequent consumer of Japanese culture, why not take a pilgrimage to Onomichi? Another highly recommended activity in Onomichi is cycling. Onomichi's famous Shimanami Kaido is a paradise for cyclists. The Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi City and Imabari City, is Japan's first bike path that crosses a strait. All bridges are equipped with bike lanes. There are plenty of bike rental facilities, and even beginners can choose simpler routes. Bicycles can be rented in Onomichi and on various islands, allowing even beginners to enjoy the fun of cycling!

When I went to Ehime, I went on a road trip to the Shimanami Kaido, which I had always wanted to go to! There were people renting bicycles, so I'd like to try that next time. I've been living in Japan for almost a year without realizing it. In addition to the well-known Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, I've also visited quite a few smaller cities. Here are some of my personal favorite small cities for those who are struggling to decide where to go (in no particular order) ⭕ Takamatsu Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture in Shikoku, and it was the first place I visited on my trip to Japan 10 years ago. It has a famous nickname as the hometown of udon noodles, so you can enjoy various kinds of udon here. Also, the triennial 'Setouchi Triennale' art festival is an event not to be missed, and from Takamatsu Port, it's very convenient to travel to treasure islands such as Shodoshima, Naoshima, and Teshima. ⭕ Kochi It could be said to be the most low-key capital city in the Shikoku region. This is the hometown of the anti-shogunate warrior Sakamoto Ryoma. During my half-day city walk in Kochi, I truly felt the city's tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, I particularly like Kochi's trams, which have super cute liveries. ⭕ Tokushima Tokushima is also a place I visited on my first trip to Japan. The Awa Dance is a local specialty here, and you must see it. Also, the Iya Valley is a great place to escape the summer heat. ⭕ Onomichi A small city facing Shikoku across the sea from Honshu, it has both mountains and sea, and cycling is very popular here. Cycling from Onomichi to Shikoku's 'Shimanami Kaido' is known as Japan's most beautiful cycling route. Ramen and oysters are local specialties here. Oh, and Yasujiro Ozu's famous work 'Tokyo Story' was also filmed in Onomichi. ⭕ Kanazawa The largest city in the Hokuriku region of Japan. It is also a city with a 'high gold content.' Ninety-nine percent of Japan's gold leaf is produced here, so you can buy various gold leaf products, including food and drinks containing gold leaf. Additionally, one of Japan's three great gardens, Kenrokuen, is also located in Kanazawa. ⭕ Saga Saga in Kyushu is often rated as one of the cities in Japan with the least presence. But after going to Saga, I fell in love with it. Saga's ramen and Wagyu beef are really delicious, and the key is that they are much cheaper than in big cities. A double portion of Saga beef for just over 5000 yen is incredibly tempting. ⭕ Hakodate I've been to Hakodate twice, once in autumn and once in winter. Compared to Sapporo, Hakodate is much more interesting. From Mount Hakodate, you can see the million-dollar night view, and Goryokaku Park is a treasure with beautiful scenery all year round.

In fact, it is a super hidden scenic spot that even locals don't know much about💡 Okino Kannon is a Kannon hall built on a small island, and it is a very mysterious place where a path to the Kannon hall appears only at low tide🌙 It is also said that if you visit this Kannon, your wish will come true🎋 There are stairs to visit the Kannon hall on the island, but some parts are deteriorated, so be careful! I would like to introduce "LOG" where I stayed when I visited Onomichi. It is the only building in Japan designed by my favorite Indian architectural design team "studio mumbai", and the rounded space design that gives a soft impression was very nice. One of the good points is that you can always go to the cafe attached to the hotel. You can enjoy coffee and sweets slowly in a sophisticated space. There is also a gallery inside the hotel, and you can enjoy the collaboration between various works and studio mumbai's architecture depending on when you visit. The interior of the building matches perfectly. It is a scenic area with many islands. It is a popular cycling area. This gelato shop is located on Ikuchijima Island on the Shimanami Kaido. The shop has been featured on TBS's "Sekakuna Gourmet," and there are many signs displayed inside the store. The gelato comes in several flavors that make use of local ingredients, and the recommended ones are the salt and Seto Inland Sea lemon flavors. The salt flavor is rich vanilla topped with salt, which brings out the vanilla flavor. The Seto Inland Sea lemon flavor is refreshing as a sorbet. In our recent driving trip in Japan, we drove from Kobe to Shikoku, passing through the Seto Inland Sea. As the area is known for its scenic beauty, we reserved one whole day to drive slowly to enjoy the different islands and the views. For lunch , we made a little detour to Shimanami Beach in Innoshima. The beach was not very long, but there was a lighthouse and camping field next to the beach. As it was a Sunday, we saw several tents set up on the beach, and the campers were enjoying their coffee and snacks. There were a couple of one story buildings facing the beach, but only one was serving lunch. We walked in and was immediately attracted by the interior design with warm wooden beams against concrete walls. Sunlight came through the ceiling and reflected onto the multiple glass balls hanging in the center of the cafe. There were 6-8 tables/ sofa set sparingly inside and we took one of the larger table near the window,m. There were only 4 lunch sets available - fried chicken, curry, and two cake sets, and priced between 1500-2000 yen. While we waited for our food, we couldn’t help but walked around the large cafe, taking photos at almost every corner. The staff also informed us that shoes must be taken off when we walk onto the two sides of the cafe where the tables are set. Slippers and bags were provided for us to carry our shoes. The cafe was so well designed, chic, and spacious. It is even better than many of the cafes in Tokyo and Osaka. We spent more than an hour in the cafe, and only wished we could come back for a second time. Last by not least, there is a huge white dinosaur standing in the backyard of the cafe- to add to the fun of this lunch break. Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture has been a favorite area for backpackers and independent travelers in recent years. The city built along the hillside has developed a unique outline. Along the trails, there are various ancient temples corresponding to the port. The scenery between movement and stillness is waiting for tourists to explore. The cutest thing that attracted me the most was the large number of cats gathered in the village. It is an area that many "cat lovers" like me will definitely visit. No matter how many times you come here, you will fall in love with Onomichi. November 2016 was my first time visiting Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture. When I arrived in Onomichi, I loved the city very much because its overall outline was very similar to Keelung, where I had lived for five years. Two years later, I followed the route I remembered, took the Shinkansen to Fukuyama Station, and then transferred to the Onomichi Line to Onomichi. Onomichi City is located in the southeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. It is a city in the eastern part of Hiroshima, but its style is completely different from that of Hiroshima city. Due to its geographical location at the junction of Okayama and Hiroshima, it serves as a "buffer zone" between the two major cities. In addition, the Onomichi Channel, which faces the Seto Inland Sea, has been a distribution center for maritime logistics since ancient times. After the opening of the Sanyo Railway in the Meiji era, rail transportation and maritime transportation were transferred here. This is what makes Onomichi so beautiful. The first thing: Solo exploration, "Cat's Path" - teasing cats, playing with cats, and playing hide-and-seek The Cat's Narrow Path is a section of the mountainside of Onomichi Senkoji Temple. The rules for coming here are that you cannot chase or rush people. Please follow the cat's footsteps. It is recommended to spend more than half a day in Onomichi, and it would be even better if you can stay overnight; and if you have a large suitcase, there are large luggage lockers as soon as you exit the station. How to get to Cat's Path? There are several ways to get there. You can walk to the Senkoji Yamaguchi Cable Car Station, which is about 15 minutes away from the station, take the cable car up the mountain, and then slowly walk down the mountain. But if you have good leg strength, you can stroll up the mountain and then walk down the mountain. The journey takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It is recommended to walk the Cat's Path in the afternoon, because you don't know where the cats hide to sleep during the day, so you have a better chance of encountering them in the afternoon. The second thing: Learn to be free from cats’ empty mind, be dazed, act cute, and “lick coffee” In addition to playing with cats, the specialty coffee shops in Cat's Narrow Road are also very famous. Almost every one of them can be used as a check-in landmark. The buildings that combine old houses, plants, art and the aroma of coffee quietly appear at the corners or ends of the mountain trails. They do not have the impression of being clean and tidy shops, but are full of decadent and primitive characteristics; the Japanese-style tea house "Houtei", also known as the Onomichi Bunko, is a small literary exhibition hall and also a place to have tea; "Owl's House" is a ruin-style coffee shop covered with lush plants. It is not only a good spot for taking photos, but also has a Fukuishi cat exhibition. When you come to Onomichi, don't rush up and down the mountain, be sure to choose a coffee shop to relax for an hour. The third thing: Cats are not animals, they are artists! A must-visit "Cat Grocery Store" Due to the fame of cats, cat-related museums, art galleries, handmade grocery stores, etc. have begun to appear along the Cat's Narrow Street. All of them are related to cats, and some of them require payment. Of course, if you don’t have time to go in or happen to encounter a store closed, the entire Cat's Narrow Street is actually an open and free exhibition venue, and interesting cat-related creations can be seen everywhere. The fourth thing: In fact, cats are not animals, they are gods! Make a wish in front of the cat statue at the "Lovers' Sanctuary" The end of the mountaintop of the Cat's Narrow Road is Senkoji Park. Next to the mountaintop cable car station, there is a special "lovers' sanctuary" cat statue. It is said that making a wish in front of the statue and locking your love lock can ensure a long-lasting relationship. There are also viewing platforms with mountain views nearby, which are especially suitable for lovers. However, the cable car only operates until the afternoon. Autumn trip to Onomichi, Hiroshima 🍁10/23 I stayed at Sakura Hotel Onomichi Ekimae, which is conveniently located about 70 seconds walk from Onomichi Station. The view was great and the staff were very friendly. There were cafes and restaurants near the hotel, so it was very convenient. As we left Onomichi's shopping district, we saw a guide for visiting old temples and started walking towards Senkoji Ropeway Station. Apparently there are 25 temples in Onomichi, including Senkoji. The stone paving was very beautiful. No matter where you look, the scenery is typical of Onomichi. It was like a place that came out of a movie. #Onomichi #OldTempleTour

If you take the Senkoji Ropeway to the top of the mountain, you will find this stylish observation deck. It is spiral-shaped, so you can enjoy the scenery as you slowly make your way to the top.
