Chinatown Restaurant, Bao Toronto, Canada
This elegant restaurant in Toronto is the place to go for baos and Chinese crepes Bao Toronto
Bao is the Chinatown outpost of a legendary Chinese restaurant serving baozi and immaculately-plated dishes from Tianjin.
Though it doesn’t carry the same name, Bao is an offshoot of Goubuli, one of China’s oldest brands dating back to 1858. It’s known for its baozi: steamed buns with signature crowns sporting exactly 18 wrinkle each.
Goubuli translates to “dog ignores” in mandarin, a reference to its historic owner’s name, Gouzi, and his tendency to ignore small talk during busy hours.
Owner Hongke Zheng, who runs this franchise along with the first location in Richmond Hill, says he changed the name to Bao to make it easier for non-mandarin speakers to pronounce.
Chinatown’s 21st century rendition of Bao, located on the ground floor of Spadina’s Dragon Condo, doesn’t seem to quite match the bustle of Goubuli’s past.
The restaurant is a beautiful mix of modern and traditional accents with tons of natural lighting. It’s elegant, but it’s not excessively fancy, and when we arrive, it’s quiet.
Don’t let the sophisticated interior fool you: Bao is, for the most part, no more expensive than many of the casual sit-down Cantonese restaurants on the strip.

Toronto’s China Town is one of the biggest communities of its kind in North America. Toronto has the highest number of Chinese in all of Canada. So it’s not surprising that the city is actually home to 5 separate China Towns.
The main one is located in the city center of Toronto. Spreading westwards along Dundas Street to Spadina, as far as Nathan Phillips Square. There are many excellent Chinese restaurants, shops and specialty stores in Toronto. There are also many street vendors and craftsmen selling their wares, especially at weekends. If you plan to visit the city and want to spend some time in this wonderful area filled with luxury restaurants, fun shops and markets, know that Toronto’s China Town area has many clean, comfortable and pretty hotels.
Restaurants and shops practically spill out onto the streets, and most of the passersby are Chinese, so you’ll feel yourself at home here. The best thing about visiting this part of the city is the food. There are tons of restaurants in the area and very few of them offer North American style nouvelle cuisine; instead you can find authentic Chinese cuisine here. Szechuan, Hunan, Cantonese or even Northern style cuisine can be found. Of course, the food prices here are very reasonable. For those of you visiting Toronto but whose stomach yearns for home, you can allay your fears.

Toronto's Chinatown and Kensington Market
📍Attraction Address: The intersection of Spadina and Dundas streets is the heart of Chinatown
👍️Must-visit spots: The sidewalks here are filled with open-air stalls every day, where citizens of all ethnicities shop, dine, and make friends.
There are numerous restaurants, but they rarely offer North American-modified dishes. Instead, they serve authentic Chinese cuisine, including Sichuan, Hunan, Cantonese, and even Northern-style dishes. The ingredients are all freshly selected from the street. The aroma of roasted chicken, duck, and suckling pig hanging in the street-side windows always makes passersby drool.
💗Other tips: Adjacent to Chinatown, Kensington Market is also a graffiti area and a melting pot of multiculturalism. It is also a famous hippie-style district in Toronto.
