🎫Tickets: 10 yuan, super cheap
👩Explanation: Free human explanation, super value! We shared with another 4 people, waited for about 50 minutes, the explanation lasted 1 hour, really learned a lot about the local traditional culture of Lingnan, very enlightening!!
Different from the architecture of Jiangnan, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is more magnificent and colorful, solemn and heavy, giving me a refreshing feeling, highly recommended!

Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (also known as the Chen Clan Academy, for those who's surname is Chen), which now houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, is a great stop on your tour of Guangzhou for its history and architecture.
It was originally a space for students training for the Confucian Imperial Examinations, built by two overseas Chinese in America returning to Guangzhou.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall has a very traditional look to it, and it is huge. It is interesting that the structure was built in such a traditional manner at a time when building going up in commercial cities in the south often had a Western architectural style.
The building features intricate wood carvings inside, and polished wooden rafters. The building was also a shrine to worship the Chen family ancestors, and it looks much like a southern Chinese temple shrine.

Hi_Lina
learn the history of China in Guangzhou.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall or Chen Clan Academy is an academic temple in Guangzhou, China, built by the 72 Chen clans for their juniors' accommodation and preparation for the imperial examinations in 1894 during the Qing dynasty.Later it was changed to be the Chen Clan's Industry College, and then middle schools afterward. Now it houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum. Located at Zhongshan 7th Road beside the Chen Clan Academy metro station exit D.#china #guangzhou #chenclan #guandong

Beautiful traditional Chinese architecture
Getting There - Zhongshan 7th road, beside Chen Clan metro station
Attractions - this was built for the Chen clans as the accommodation and preparation for the imperial examination during Qing Dynasty.
It is now Guangdong Folk Art Museum. The complex is huge with many buildings and halls. The buildings are separated with small alleys and connected with corridors. It was not crowded when I visited. It feels peaceful walking along the alley, seeing the hall, the wood carving decorated around this complex. There were artworks carved out from elephant tusks displayed here as well. Take your time to explore all of these ancient artworks.

Massage spa~ really nice environment despite being quite open to other people, so can be a little noisy. The massage is nice, and the pressure is good. They even supply a hot beanbag and blanket, so it's very comfortable!
188RMB for neck, back, foot massage, then some discount from Dianping. Paid 165RMB in the end. Just a 15min walk from the metro.
🕯
Beautiful lights at night, relaxing walk around and try to win toys at the game machines. Afterwards you can even stop at the Starbucks nearby which is in a beautiful building. There's also an outside rock climbing wall for those who enjoy the adventure.
🥢
We visited a really good vegetarian restaurant called 佛有缘素食馆, which is unique in this part of the area. Very local area down some back streets. The food is very delicious and even have some fake meat dishes like tofu fish. Would highly recommend the "duck" and fried tofu as in the pictures.

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is a must-visit spot in Guangzhou. This beautifully-decorated ancestral hall in Guangdong is the largest and most well-preserved traditional building of its kind in south China. It is magnificently decorated and well preserved. The entire complex is southward-facing. Its traditional layout consists of three yards, three exits, nine halls and two wings. The 19 individual buildings are arranged neatly, creating a dignified atmosphere.

In Guangzhou? A visit to the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, 陈家祠, is a must. Dating originally to the late Qing Dynasty (though heavily restored in parts), the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the finest examples of Lingnan architecture and art. In addition to the building itself, richly ornamented with wood and stone carving and ceramic decorations, it is home to the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum, a small but excellently curated display of permanent and rotating exhibits including Chaozhou woodcarving, ceramics, ivory carving, embroidery, paper cutting and more.
This is a place I always bring visitors to Guangzhou.

Lingnan Old Dream in Guangzhou: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall.
Also known as "Chen Clan Academy", it is located on Zhongshan 7th Road, Guangzhou. The academy was built in the 14th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty and completed in the 19th year. It is a "clan ancestral hall" funded by the Chen clan from all over Guangdong Province.
It is one of the largest existing traditional Cantonese buildings and the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall-style building. It is known as the "Pearl of Lingnan Architectural Art".
The entire house, from the base column to the roof ridge, uses stone carvings, brick carvings, wood carvings, gray plastic pottery, copper and iron casting, and color painting. The overall shape is vivid, the colors are rich, and the craftsmanship is exquisite. Guo Moruo once wrote a poem praising it: "Heavenly work can be replaced by man, but man-made heaven is unknown. It is indeed a creation of the world, better than reading for ten years."

From Shamian to Haixinsha, travel through a century of Guangzhou.
When visiting Guangzhou, it's recommended to stay near Beijing Road Pedestrian Street, as the transportation is convenient and there are many delicious foods. Just a few steps away, you can find a century-old store that is a cultural heritage.
Travel tips: Start from Gongyuanqian Subway Station in the morning, and take two stops to Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. The ancestral hall itself is a work of art, and there are many folk art galleries inside, such as clay sculptures, straw paintings, and nut carvings, as well as some lost crafts that are breathtaking.
Walk south from Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, and you will pass by Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Shamian. If you don't like shopping, you can skip the pedestrian street, but Shamian is a must-see place worth exploring slowly. Some people say that Shamian is the Bund of Guangzhou. Indeed, every building has its own history, and some are still foreign consulates. A city walk along the river for less than two kilometers will take you to Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Baroque-style facade of the church has a touch of Notre Dame de Paris, and the interior decoration is also magnificent.
There are two subway stations near Sacred Heart Cathedral, and it takes less than 40 minutes to reach Canton Tower. The area around Canton Tower and Haixin Bridge is the essence of Guangzhou's night view. If you are taking a night cruise on the Pearl River with kids, be sure to board the boat here. The cruise ships are newer and have various cartoon themes such as Snoopy and GG Bond. It is recommended to go there at four or five in the afternoon, so you won't miss the sunset and the lighting of Canton Tower.
When you return to Beijing Road at night, the real nightlife begins. Enjoy beef offal, dim sum, and desserts one by one, and eat your way back to the hotel. Perfect!

Construction began in 1888, during the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty.
The hall makes clever use of wood carvings, brick carvings, stone carvings, plaster sculptures, pottery sculptures, bronze and iron castings, and paintings. It is one of the most worthwhile buildings to see in southern China. It was built with funds donated by representatives of the Chen family from 72 counties in Guangdong Province over a period of 20 years. It is the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall-style building in China, and is known as a pearl of Lingnan architecture. Worth a second visit!

❤ Recommended reason:
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, also known as the Chen Clan Academy, is located on Zhongshan 7th Road, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The Chen Clan Academy is one of the largest traditional Cantonese buildings in existence, and is the largest, best-preserved, and most exquisitely decorated ancestral hall-style building in China. It is known as the "Pearl of Lingnan Architecture".
🌟 Highlights:
🪵 Wood carvings: Mostly concentrated on the beams, doors, and screens of the Juxian Hall. The 11 double-layer openwork shrines in the back seat are the best of the wood carvings, with exquisite craftsmanship, beautiful patterns, and rich themes, such as flowers, birds, insects, fish, historical stories, and opera characters.
🧱 Brick carvings: The most extensive are the outer walls of the east and west inverted seats, using three-dimensional and delicate artistic techniques, such as "Liu Qing Fulongju", which vividly depicts lively scenes, and is made of several brick carvings with mortise and tenon joints, with patterns that are very layered and three-dimensional.
🪨 Stone carvings: The craftsmen use techniques such as round carving, open carving, relief carving, and line carving to create vivid and lifelike images of Lingnan flowers and fruits, rare birds and animals, and figures, such as the stone lions in front of the gate, with stone balls in their mouths that can roll freely, and the base with high relief patterns symbolizing good luck and happiness.
🍑 Ceramic sculptures: Mainly concentrated on the roof ridges of 19 halls, with historical stories and folk legends as themes, decorated with various animals, flowers, birds, fruits, and other patterns, with bright colors and lifelike images.
🌫️ Gray sculptures: The craftsmanship is concentrated on the roof ridges and courtyard corridors, with plant ash as the main formula, which is not only beautiful and atmospheric, but also has the function of moisture-proof and heat absorption, adapting to the humid and hot climate of Lingnan.
🏡 In terms of courtyard design, the front courtyard is deeper than the back courtyard, and the layout of sparse front and dense back, low front and high back is conducive to ventilation. The central building, Juxian Hall, is tall and spacious, with a white stone terrace in front of the hall, and the stone railings are inlaid with iron-cast flowers and other pictures.
🧱 The Qingyun Lane above is made of blue bricks, with the functions of light gathering, ventilation, and fire prevention, and the bat and bottle patterns on it imply "good fortune and peace, and a smooth career".
🎫 Tickets: Only 10 yuan per person for on-site ticket purchase, and free for the elderly and minors! 👵👶 Super cost-effective, definitely worth your visit!

The most worthwhile building to see in southern China.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall was built in the 14th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1888) and completed in the 19th year (1893). It was built by the Chen clan from all over Guangdong Province as a "clan hall" to provide temporary accommodation for the Chen clan's children who went to the provincial capital to prepare for the imperial examination, wait for appointments, pay taxes, and litigate. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is one of the largest existing traditional Guangfu buildings and is known as the "Pearl of Lingnan Architectural Art."
It is now the site of the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, a first-class museum in China, with a collection of more than 20,000 precious cultural relics and modern art treasures, including nearly 3,000 national-level precious cultural relics. It is the most richly endowed art museum in Guangdong Province, with a collection of folk art treasures from Guangdong since the Ming and Qing dynasties, covering all the crafts in Guangdong Province that have been included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.

Guangdong Travel.
The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is not only a representative of traditional Guangdong architecture, but also a masterpiece of Lingnan carving art. Here, you can experience the exquisite craftsmanship of brick carving, wood carving, stone carving, and gray sculpture. Every step is a different scene, and your eyes are filled with the beauty of art!
✨ Wood Carving: The Beauty of Detail
As soon as you enter the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, the wood carvings will amaze you. Whether it is the beams, screens, or eaves, they are all carved with exquisite historical stories and auspicious patterns. Especially the one based on the story of Cao Cao's grand banquet at the Bronze Sparrow Terrace from "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms," where the expressions of the characters are vivid, as if history is being recreated.
🪨 Stone Carving: A Combination of Strength and Rhythm
The stone carvings in front of the ancestral hall are mainly made of granite, which is wind and rain resistant. The stone lions, column bases, beams, and other architectural components all embody the unique stone carving style of Lingnan. The railings on the moon platform are carved with Lingnan-style fruits and flowers, exuding artistic beauty in their simplicity, making you want to touch the weathered stone textures.
🧱 Brick Carving: A Majestic Art Gallery
The six brick carvings on the outer wall, each 4 meters long, are made of several pieces of Dongguan blue bricks. The themes of mythology, landscapes, and gardens are rich in layers and have a strong sense of three-dimensionality. The finely carved patterns are like frozen paintings, making you stop and admire them.
🐉 Gray and Ceramic Sculpture: A Collision of Color and Dynamism
The roof and wall decorations use a large number of gray sculptures and paintings, with patterns mostly of mythical figures and auspicious animals, in bright colors, bringing the building to life. Especially the "Eight Immortals Celebrating Longevity" on the ridge decoration of the Juxian Hall, where the figures are lifelike, showcasing the essence of Lingnan gray and ceramic sculpture techniques.

Have you ever seen a tree with colorful flowers?
Guangzhou city walk
I woke up at 7:15, so I got up and went out for dim sum. The White Swan Hotel is too expensive for me, so I went to another recommended restaurant. I chose one that looked good near me.
I went to a restaurant on the other side of the river from Shamian. Luckily, I found out that they were having an anniversary celebration, and dim sum was 32% off before 10:30. What a surprise! There were so many options, but I chose shrimp dumplings, chicken feet, red rice rolls, durian pastry, and Guangdong cabbage. It cost me CNY 120.
After eating, I started my city walk with a heavy stomach. I went to Zhou Tou Zui Park, the Customs House, the Post Office Museum, and the Aiqun Hotel (which looks like the Wukang Building in Shanghai). I forgot to go to the church, but I went to the Renmin South Historical Block (which looks like a small commodity wholesale market), the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (CNY 10), and Lingnan architecture. I admired the beautiful sculptures and continued walking through Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street to Yongqing Fang.
My destination today was Zhongshuge Bookstore, but I found that Yongqing Fang was quite special, with a sense of history and modernity.
I found a small shop and had red bean soup and pig's feet with ginger (I saw a local girl ordering it, so I decided to try it). Cantonese is the main language here, and it sounds nice. Public transport announcements are in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.
I walked to Xiguan Mansion, passed by the Liwan Museum (CNY 5), and didn't go in. I wandered to the subway station, passed by Lihu Bay Park, Pantang Wuyue Historical Block, and a hybrid bougainvillea tree with colorful flowers.
After getting off the subway, I went through security and walked a long way to the boarding gate. I'm exhausted today.
