Chaotian Palace was a Confucian temple in the Qing Dynasty. The entire complex includes Jiangning Prefecture School, Chaotian Palace, and Nanjing Museum, which was built from several halls of Chaotian Palace. Jiangning Prefecture School is now the Jiangsu Kunqu Opera Theater, and only the exterior can be viewed. Tourists can only enter Chaotian Palace and Nanjing Museum to visit. History of Chaotian PalaceThe history of Chaotian Palace can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period, when King Fuchai of Wu smelted iron and cast swords at Yeshan here. The history of building the Confucian Temple can be traced back to the Northern Song Dynasty. It was named Chaotian Palace in the Ming Dynasty. It was a place for the royal family to worship Taoist gods and learn the etiquette of paying homage to the emperor. It was later destroyed in war. From the fifth to ninth year of Tongzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1866-1870 AD), it was rebuilt on the original basis and became a Confucian Temple again. Jiangning Prefecture School was also moved here from Jiming Mountain. Chaotian PalaceChaotian Palace is located on the south side of the artificial canal "Yundu", surrounded by the "Wanren Palace Wall", with a Pan Pond inside the wall. The east and west sides are respectively marked with the "Virtue Matches Heaven and Earth" and "Dao Guan Gujin" archways. The main buildings from southeast to northwest are Lingxing Gate, Dacheng Gate, Dacheng Hall, and Chongsheng Hall, with yellow glazed tiles on the roof. The four pairs of dragon statues under the Lingxing Gate are lifelike, and a statue of Confucius stands in front of the Dacheng Gate. Behind the Chongsheng Hall is the back garden. Near the Feiyun Pavilion in the east is the Qianlong Imperial Monument Pavilion, and the Jingyi Pavilion in the west is the highest point of Yeshan.Nanjing MuseumOn one side of the Chongsheng Hall is the main exhibition hall of the Nanjing Museum, which mainly displays the basic exhibition "Dragons and Tigers - Nanjing City History Exhibition". The exhibits are arranged in the order of the times. The first floor is exhibits from ancient times to the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the second floor is exhibits from the Republic of China. The third floor is "Jade Hall Fine Art - Collection Exhibition", where the "treasure of the museum" blue and white plum vase from the late Yuan Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty is located, with a vivid painting of "Xiao He chasing Han Xin under the moon" on the vase. Nanjing Museum has designated Dacheng Hall and Chongsheng Hall as special exhibition and temporary exhibition halls, and the exhibitions currently being held in Chaotian Palace are written on the sign at the door.
