Castel Sant'Angelo, Hadrian's Mausoleum
#visitrome
Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Castle of the Holy Angel, is commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself. It was usually used by Pope's as castles and fortress. In the beginning of 14th century, the Pope used this castle as his residence. Pope Nicholas III connected the castle to St Peter's Basilica via a fortified corridor. It is also used by several Pope's during the sacking of Rome as an escape route from Vatican. Today, it serves as a museum after it's decommissioning in 1901. Connected directly to the castle is the bridge of the Angel's where several remarkable angel statues erected along the bridge leading to the castle.

Time-travel in Rome
Castel San't Angelo (Mausoleum of Hadrian) is one of the must-visit places in Rome. I would definitely recommend first-time traveller to include this site in the itinerary.
It is easy to spot it among the buildings in Rome because of its imposing and towering cylindrical shape, located exactly eastwards from the Vatican City. This is a building that has witnessed so much changes that have been happening in Rome throughout the history. While visiting the Castel, it is as if you are time-traveling from the Roman Empire to the modern days. Originally built as the mausoleum for the Roman Empire, it also served as a fortress, palace and prison. Even the Popes used to live here!

Great old castle, nice placement near the Tiber river. The view is gorgeous, especially at sunset since the Basilica of St. Peter can be seen in the background. Also, the pedestrian bridge over the river is a romantic place with people that play slow songs on the guitar. We did not enter because the castle was closed, but it was pretty crowded so I suppose you should get tickets in advance if you want to visit the inside. #境外遊

Of course, when you visit Rome, you should spend a day exploring the Vatican City. After visiting the Vatican, we also visited the Mausoleum of Hadrian, also known as Castel Sant’Angelo and enjoyed some spectacular views of Rome. This is a fortress located on the right bank of the Tiber, a short distance from the Vatican City. The building was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family and was finished finished in the year 139. It was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. Make sure you go to the top of the castle to enjoy some spectacular views.

The iconic St. Angelo Bridge crosses the River Tiber leading to the entrance of Castel Sant’Angelo. Once the tallest building in Rome, it was built in the 2nd century CE at the direction of Emperor Hadrian. Will you plan a Roman adventure this year?

Walking over the river in Rome to Castel Sant'Angelo is a moment to always remember. The history of the building and grounds are so interesting and crowds (for Rome) are reasonable. An easy walk from St. Peter's this is a site you must put on your to do list. You can have a coffee and snack in the castle and enjoy the view. #givethanks #cadtelsantangelo #couplestrip #unforgettableexperiences #givethanks

Roman Holiday Audrey Hepburn is dancing here, just like the fairy world. Yes, here is the Castel Sant'Angelo, Castel Sant'Angelo can go by bus, 982 Road to the Piazza Castel Sant'Angelo station, google map to force. Castel Sant'Angelo front is surrounded by Rome's Tiber River, bridge and the beautiful reflection in the water of incomparable beauty. The central circular Fort is Castel Sant' Angelo friends, was built in the 2nd century AD. When the Roman emperor as their future grave, and later due to historical changes, has become an obstacle to the invasion of the enemy fortress, prison, Palace of the Popes, until now the National Museum. Slowly around the walls of the summit is not tired, all the way there to see the scenery, so no need for the day is cloudy or rainy days and feel pity. St. Angel's Castle was originally the tomb of Emperor Hadrian. Later, it was used as a military fortress and turned into a prison. It was not until Pope Gregory I, who dreamed of an angel coming to end the Black Death, that it got its name today.
Fort Sant'Angelo has a secret passage to St. Peter's Basilica, which protects the Pope's secret retreat and a large amount of Pope's property. Fort Sant'Angelo can be climbed to the top and is a good location overlooking the Tiber River and the city of Rome. There are 12 angel statues on the St. Angel Bridge in front of you, of which the most recent two were made by Bernini, but the real ones were removed and protected. When they went, they were just in time for the construction and restoration, and the panorama could not be seen.

Tomb of the Emperor
The castle of Sant Angelo was primarily built by emperor Hadrian to serve as his mosolleum. Today it houses a museum with a rich historic collection. Refreshingly, this wasn't crowded so it made for a peaceful two hours exploring every corner of this place.
I didn't have a guide this time so I was able to relax and read through descriptions at my own pace. This makes for a great stop on your way to the Vatican which is a treasure cove from historical and musuem persoective. This will help gather some more information and understanding of how Rome has transitioned in the last two thousand years.
There is a cafe with snack and drink options. Also clean washrooms. As always there is considerable walking involved and some stairs too. So put on the best pair of walking shoes. The views from the top were gorgeous. It gets quite pleasant towards the evening.

Castel Sant'Angelo | From imperial tomb, prison, fortress to museum
I finally arrived at the other side of the Anywhere Door, Castel Sant'Angelo. Initially built in 130 AD as an imperial mausoleum, it was later converted into a papal palace. It is called 'Castel Sant'Angelo' because during the late stages of the Black Death in Europe, the Pope saw the Archangel Michael sheathing his sword atop this building, and soon after, the epidemic came to an end. To thank the angel, a bronze statue of the angel (see image 4) was added to the building, and its name was changed to 'Castel Sant'Angelo'.
❤️Recommended reason:
The Ponte Sant'Angelo leading to Castel Sant'Angelo is also worth seeing, see images one, five, and six;
📝Note tips:
Personally, I find Castel Sant'Angelo more charming at dusk;

The magic of Lungotevere in Rome: The unmissable places to admire at sunset ❤️
There are many great architectural works that overlook the Tiber, among which many make Rome "great".
The Tiber is the water vein of the capital, for millennia it has told legends and acts as a silent sentinel to the city Caput Mundi.
So if you are in town my advice is to come here at sunset and admire:
- Sant'Angelo castel
- The Church of the Sacred Heart of Suffteggio
- The Palace of Justice, called by the Romans: Palazzaccio
- And finally see the sun go down over the horizon with the Skyline of San Pietro, from Ponte Umberto I.
What is your favorite spot?

Castel Sant'Angelo is a must-see attraction to Rome. St. Angel's Fort is a mausoleum built on the banks of the Tiber River. It was designed and personally produced by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (Hadrian) in the 2nd century AD as his own and his successor. The resting place. Centuries have passed, and Castel Sant'Angelo has undergone some changes: first as a fortress to stop the invasion of the Visigoths and East Goths, then as a prison, and finally into a magnificent papal palace. Now a national museum, in addition to the collection of stuccoes, frescoes and pope's residential furniture, ancient weapons are also an important precious collection here.
The Holy Angel Bridge across the Tiber River in front of Castel Sant'Angelo is the most beautiful bridge in the city of Rome. There are twelve statues of angels on the bridge. Each angel holds the same torture instrument as Jesus. The angels are from the hands of Bernini.
Sant'Angelo is at the western end of the ancient Roman region. There are several bridges leading to the west bank of the Tiber River. The more important one is the Emmanuel II Bridge and the other is the famous bridge to Castel Sant'Angelo (Ponte). Santa Angelo). The bridge designed by Bernini can be said to be a masterpiece of Baroque decorative art, but the statues of the angels on the bridge, two or two of which were hand-carved by Bernini, have been moved to the Santa Adrea delle Fratte church to be preserved. Place two copies on the bridge.

Castel Sant'Angelo is an important scene in Dan Brown's famous novel "Angels and Demons", where the Illuminati is gathering in secret.
Although the main characters in the film have now passed away, they are left with a timeless classic. Roman holiday is far from being felt in a day. This romantic city is always worth your while to remember.
The ancient buildings of hundreds of years, the magnificent historical monuments, the museum's dazzling array of artistic treasures, because of the intensive appearance, too late to appreciate, they hurried away.
