A Romantic Spring Escape: The Perfect Couple's Travel Experience in Gyeongju
#coupletravel #100waysoftravel #southkorea #gyeongju #sakurablossoms #cherrybloosom
I would say Gyeongju is perfect for a couple's trip in spring. The cherry blossoms are in full bloom, with petals flying everywhere, making the air feel sweet and romantic. Korean couples are all around, setting up their tripods to capture the perfect couple photos. We brought our own tripod too, and they were more than willing to help us take photos whenever we needed. We spent a lovely afternoon relaxing and chilling in the Sakura garden at Bulguksa Temple and by the peaceful Boemun Lake, soaking in the beauty of the season and each other's company. It was a truly magical and romantic experience.
Gyeongju is a historic city that served as the capital of the Silla Dynasty for over 1,000 years, known as Seorabeol, Geumseong, or Gyerim at the time. In particular, I visited Bulguksa Temple and Gameunsa Temple Site, which were representative temples of the Unified Silla period.
1️⃣ Bulguksa Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, first built during the reign of King Beopheung but significantly reconstructed by Kim Dae-Seong during the reign of King Gyeongdeok after the unification.
2️⃣ Bulguksa Temple houses many relics, among which the Dabotap and Seokgatap pagodas are the most famous. Dabotap, National Treasure No. 20, is also the background of the 10-won coin, and originally there were four stone lions at the base, but now only one remains.
3️⃣ Alongside Dabotap, Seokgatap, National Treasure No. 21, stands facing it. Notably, the oldest existing Mugujeonggwang Great Dharani Sutra was discovered in Seokgatap.
4️⃣ Leaving Bulguksa Temple and heading towards the city, you can see a replica of the nine-story pagoda of Hwangnyongsa Temple, which is said to have been the largest in Silla.
5️⃣ Leaving the city of Gyeongju and heading towards Gampo Bay on the East Sea, you can find the Gameunsa Temple Site, built by King Munmu's son in memory of his father who unified the three kingdoms, and there you can also see the Gameunsa Temple Site Three-Story Stone Pagoda, National Treasure No. 112.
6️⃣ Next to the Gameunsa Temple Site, in Gampo Bay, is King Munmu's underwater tomb, also known as Daewangam.
7️⃣ Gyeongju is also famous for delicious foods such as mulhoe and milmyeon, so be sure to try the local cuisine along with your historical and cultural journey of Silla.

Beautiful autumn view of Bulguksa Temple
#falltrip
The same goes for spring flowers, but autumn leaves may suddenly turn red due to changes in temperature, but for now, the autumn leaves at Bulguksa Temple may not be until the end of October. When I actually came to Gyeongju two years ago, I happened to see the autumn leaves of Bulguksa Temple. It was the peak of autumn leaves in Bulguksan Mountain around mid-November.
I thought I'd still have to wait another week to see the colorful fall leaves of Gyeongju's famous temple Bulguksa. I thought it was too hasty to come here with the thought of autumn leaves, so I decided to take my time to look around the Bulguksa Temple grounds.

Bulguksa Travel - One day itinerary
#traveldiaries
The Bulguksa Temple is one of the oldest temples in South Korea, located in the historic city of Gyeongju. Here’s a guide for a day trip:
Bulguksa Temple is a bit far from the Gyeongju KTX station, so after arriving by train, you’ll need to take a 40-minute bus ride to the temple. The bus route is convenient and runs frequently.
If you arrive in the morning, you’ll likely reach the temple around lunchtime. I recommend eating before exploring. There are many good restaurants nearby, and I suggest trying:
📍Address: Chowon Grilled Bulgogi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongju-si, Jinhyeon-dong 66-5. They offer a variety of options from pork to seafood at reasonable prices.
After lunch, you can explore the temple and enjoy its beauty. Once done, I recommend relaxing at a nearby café:
📍Address: Caffe Old City, Jinhyeon-dong 66-8. If you love cats, this café is perfect, as the owner has several friendly cats you can play with.
After some rest, take the bus back to Gyeongju station and head home after a pleasant day.

Gyeongju - Golden City
#traveldiaries
Gyeongju, known as the Golden City, is an ancient capital of Korea. You can feel a rich historical atmosphere when traveling here, as many of Gyeongju's famous destinations are renowned for their deep connection to Korea's imperial past and Buddhism. Some of the most famous sites include the Daereungwon Ancient Tombs, Cheomseongdae Observatory, and Bulguksa Temple. The recommended seasons to visit are spring and fall, when you can enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom or the beauty of the golden autumn leaves.

Gyeongju, known as the “museum without walls,” is home to some of South Korea’s most significant historical and cultural sites. Once the capital of the ancient Silla Kingdom, Gyeongju is filled with royal tombs, ancient temples, and UNESCO-listed sites like Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto. The city’s historic area is perfect for walking or cycling as you explore the ancient palaces and tombs scattered across the landscape. Visit in the spring to witness cherry blossoms blooming over the ancient sites, adding to the town’s serene beauty.

Second visit to Busan.
Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, Songdo, Yeongdo, Baeksan Beach, Gamcheon Culture Village, Nampo-dong, Gwangalli Drone Show, Yacht Holic, Diamond Bay, Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju, Donggung Palace, Daereungwon Tomb Complex, Yangdong Village, Hahoe Village, Hwangridan-gil. This time, I visited all the places I missed last time, not a single one left out.
I made full use of the Visit Busan Pass, Trip Pass, and Taiwan Pay. I think I can call myself a semi-expert in Busan travel now.
I originally wanted to experiment with the recently promoted Busan Subway app QR code as my main transportation card, but it can only be used for the subway and not for other transportation. So, I ended up using the Trip Pass as my main card. By the way, their 1-day pass (₩6000) and 3-day pass (₩13000) seem very cost-effective. I recommend it to those who plan to travel around Busan a lot.

I visited Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju to see the flowers in April 2024.
I went to Gyeongju on a cool day in April 2024, perfect for traveling.
The sole purpose was to see the double cherry blossoms!!
Despite the rain the day before, the flowers were still beautifully in bloom, which was so pretty and nice.
Personally, I think double cherry blossoms are the best for taking photos and making memories!
Everyone, come to Gyeongju next year to see the double cherry blossoms!!
But you have to time it right.
They usually start blooming in mid-April and last until the end of April!
While you're here, make sure to visit Bulguksa Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site~~~

Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju, South Korea
This temple is peaceful and simple, much like other temples. Tourists of all ages and even those with disabilities can visit. Their tourism services are truly excellent.
What impressed me the most was the changing leaves. Seeing and experiencing it was incredibly beautiful. I didn't want to leave. Our tour group was so engrossed in taking pictures that the guide had to call us together.

The original beauty of Bulguksa Temple
#tripblazers
Bulguksa Temple at Dapsaji Temple, which contains the soul of the old Silla and the wounds of the Imjin War. Bulguksa Temple was founded in 528 and destroyed during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1593. Since then, restoration and reconstruction began again in 1604, and the restoration work was successful. Bulguksa Temple is a transfer of the ideal world of the Three Kingdoms Period to the ground and is largely composed of three areas. The Sabah world of Sakyamuni Buddha based on the Lotus Sutra was transferred to Daeungjeon Hall, the paradise world of Amitabha Buddha based on the Muryang Sutra was transferred to Gwaneumjeon Hall and Geungnakjeon Hall, and the soft cremation world of Virozana Buddha based on the Hwaeomgyeong was transferred to Birojeon Hall.
