Since my flight to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam was early in the morning, I stayed overnight at a hotel near the airport. Thanks to that, I was able to take my time at the airport the next day and eat breakfast at the lounge that I could enter with my Priority Pass 😋 ➡️Arrived in Ho Chi Minh City in the evening! I headed to the hotel in a car that I had reserved in advance! When traveling abroad, I recommend booking an airport transfer in advance to save time and get to the hotel smoothly! As soon as I checked in, I enjoyed shopping at a nearby market and went to eat pho for dinner. I was also interested in the pho at a local shop, but since it was my first day, I chose a restaurant first! After dinner, I went to a cafe that I've always wanted to go to, which has delicious chocolate 🍫 The inside of the cafe was spacious and had a nice sweet chocolate aroma, and they also sold a lot of chocolate and miscellaneous goods as souvenirs ✨ I wanted to buy chocolate as a souvenir, but it's very hot in Vietnam, so I thought it would melt, so I couldn't buy it this time, which was a shame... After the cafe, I went to the rooftop bar! Although the time was short, I could still feel its enthusiasm and diverse charm. Here are my travel insights from Ho Chi Minh City. Day 1: Exploring the City, Experiencing the Blend of History and Modernity On the first day of arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, I chose to start from the city center to feel the unique atmosphere of this city. The first stop was the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, a 19th-century church that is a relic of the French colonial period. Its elegant red brick exterior and Gothic architectural style are breathtaking. The square in front of the church is also a gathering place for locals and tourists, with many people taking photos or resting there. Next, I visited the Central Post Office, which is adjacent to the Notre-Dame Cathedral. This is a typical French-style building with luxurious interior decorations, old-fashioned phone booths, and wooden benches, making one feel as if they have traveled back to the colonial era. The atmosphere inside the post office is both ancient and modern, making it a daily communication place for tourists and locals alike. At noon, I enjoyed local delicacies at Ben Thanh Market in the city center. This one is my favourite of all. 2) Pho; This one need no introduction, I had it few times while in the city. 3) Chargrilled pork & betel leaves 4) Banh Flan (Vietnamese Creme Caramel - A Silky Egg Pudding) 5) Vietnamese Coconut Coffee - creamy texture and subtle tropical sweetness. But any vietnamese coffee worth trying. 6) Lychee - while I was visiting, lychee is in season and I think it is my favourite fruit from that trip.

There seems to be cheaper deals if you go in the morning as they believe making sales early brings good luck! Many items can be found in the market from clothes, bags, pottery souveniers, local coffee, and there is also food options and drinks too. Most of the stalls require you to haggle, or bargain. I experienced reducing a price from 450,000 to 100,000VND. The vendors can be a little pushy but overall very friendly. The building itself is old, large, and a nice setting. Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) is the capital and biggest city of Vietnam and it’s a must do if you’re looking to eat your way around an eclectic city. It doesn’t get as much attention compared to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore but id honestly put it on par with them. It’s not as developed as the others which means it’s also a lot cheaper and it’s a great city to explore on a budget. If you love coffee you’d love this city as it’s famous for its coffee, either drip style or iced with condensed milk. The beans they use here are locally grown robusta beans which are twice as strong as your standard arabica beans - so be careful! Around this coffee culture lots of amazing Independent cafes have opened up, some with some phenomenal architecture and interior design Anh roastery was my favourite! The city has some amazing historical architecture from the French colonial period, brutalist buildings from the communist boom era and modern skyscrapers that reflect the recent prosperity of Vietnam. The downtown squares of the city are the best place to eat and drink, and remember to look up as often the best places are on floors above street level. The historical side of the city is amazing with the central post office, market, independence plaza and presidential palace. The absolute highlight for me was the War Remnants museum, a harrowing and informative deep dive into the Vietnam war and its effect on the county and population. City of Ho Chi Minh are serviced by comfortable public transport such as city buses and since late last year, the metro systems. You can take the metro from heart of city in Ben Thanh to point of interests like Landmark 81, HCM University, and Soui Tien Theme Park. Or take the public bus to other interesting destinations. The metro and buses are very reliable, comes very frequently, and very affordable. each ride on the city bus should cost no more than 12k VND. Do bring some small notes if you wish to take public buses as there isn't conductor onboard HCMC city buses, and not all buses accept credit card yet (some bus had started to accept Mastercard and it will be progressively expanded to cover all the routes. We visited Ben Thanh Market at night, and the energy was electric. I tried a bowl of hot phở and couldn’t resist the grilled pork skewers and fresh Vietnamese spring rolls. Everything was freshly prepared and bursting with flavor—exactly what you’d hope for from authentic local eats. The vendors were friendly, and there was a nice mix of locals and tourists sitting on small stools, enjoying their meals under the open sky. The market itself, though quieter indoors at night, still had a few stalls open selling souvenirs and local goods.
