The Basilica of St. Clement of Lateran, located in La Trano, Rome, is a Catholic basilica. The biggest feature of this church is that it clearly presents the historical level of the city of Rome. The lower site of St. Clement's Cathedral dates back to the Roman Republic in the 2nd century BC, but excavations are ongoing and have not yet been opened; today's deeper excavations are of 1st-century AD buildings, including an early Christian Houses of worship and temples dedicated to the Persian god Mithras (the god of light). Then there is the partially intact 4th-century church. In 1084, the building was burned down under the looting of the Normans, and a new church was built on the original site, using the materials of the original building. At present, what tourists come to see directly is this post-renovation church, and they can also enter the basement for 5 euros to learn more about the history of the city of Rome.
