I got lucky and managed to make two reservations for June and July to try out all their dishes. I got seated at their secret corner with only 3 tables and away from the main dining hall. I ordered their popular nutmeg punch for a start and continued to order 7 main dishes, Kueh Pie Tee, Lor Bak, Beef rendang, Kerabu sotong, Nasi ulam, Sambal prawn with petai and a pengat for desserts. 2023 is the first year where by Michelin guide set foot in Malaysia, and we are delighted to have 4 One-starred restaurant, 2 in Penang and 2 in Kuala Lumpur. Auntie Gaik Lean, being one of the nominated one, is a restaurant specialized in Nyonya delicacies, so we took the opportunity to try it before it is fully booked. We ordered several dishes such as pickeled vege duck soup, sambal brinjal, assam fish, nyonya platter and nyonya style fried chicken. Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery in Penang was rated as Michelin 1 star for two successive years. And it does live up to the reputation. Tucked along Bishop Street, this family-run restaurant delivers authentic Peranakan cuisine—yet with a lot of extra care given to details. There are a good deal of tempting options on the menu. But there were only two of us, so I couldn’t order too much. Every item was spot-on, from sambal petai to otak-otak and nasi ulam. I think it’s the best Peranakan cuisine I’ve ever had. But the prices are quite steep too. The vibrant blue door and nostalgic interior created a classic Peranakan vibe. Booking ahead is a must—tables fill up fast, unless you arrive half an hour before business hour like we do.

Wevisited@auntiegaiklean in a recent trip to Penang. This one Michelin-starred Peranakan restaurant serves up authentic Nyonya dishes that celebrate Malay and Chinese cultures coming together in food. Some dishes that were memorable: Assam Hae, Nyonya Fried Rice and the Sago Gula Melaka. Reserve your tables early! The queue here can get pretty long.

I had heard of Auntie Gaik Lean's restaurant a long time ago, but couldn't find any reservation methods online, so I had to walk in and try my luck. We arrived at 12:30 noon and were able to share a table. I felt so happy! The use of spices is bold but just right, just enough to stimulate the taste buds without being too salty or heavy. The restaurant has just been renovated in a royal blue and ink painting style, which is very nice. You can also see the portrait of the proprietress on the wall. The only beef dish and fried rice are recommended, and you can ask the waiter to recommend the rest. On the contrary, the recommended snack platter was quite ordinary, just like taking photos.
