🇪🇸Splendid Seville🇪🇸
Visiting the Archivo General de Indias, in English -The General Archive of the Indies, this was built during the reign of Philip II, this building was designed by Juan de Herrera to be used as the Lonja de Mercaderes. It was completed in 1646, under the direction of several prestigious architects such as Juan de Minjares, Alonso de Vandelvira and Miguel de Zumárraga.
Later it was converted into the General Archive of the Indies and thus provided a central location for all the documents relating to Spanish overseas possessions between the 15th and 19th centuries. Everything here is very well kept and documented.
👑The General Archive of the Indies is one of the most important document centres that exist with regard to the discovery and the conquest of New World.
They also have a lovely courtyard to walk around in👍

Discovering historical documents in Sevilla 🇪🇸
#weekendgetaways
The Archivo General de Indias in Seville is a treasure trove of historical documents, offering a deep dive into Spain’s colonial past. Established in 1785 by King Charles III, the archive was created to centralize all records related to the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the Philippines. Housed in the Casa Lonja de Mercaderes, a Renaissance building designed by Juan de Herrera, the archive is an architectural gem itself.
Inside, you’ll find over 43,000 volumes and 80 million pages of invaluable documents, including maps, drawings, and manuscripts that chronicle the administration of the Spanish colonies. The building features a large central courtyard, grand staircases, and beautifully decorated halls, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and architecture lovers alike.
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, the Archivo General de Indias is a testament to Seville’s rich cultural heritage and its pivotal role in global history.
