A Rich Japanese Meal for Two in Tsim Sha Tsui
I met up with a friend at this upscale Japanese restaurant. After looking at the menu, we decided that the Arashiyama set for two ($899) was the best value. It includes appetizers, salad, dessert, snacks, sashimi, sushi, hot pot, and udon. The variety is extensive and quite satisfying.
Appetizers
The appetizers include three types of pickles and a salad that can be shared between two people. The three pickles are radish, burdock, and cucumber. The pickles are well-marinated and refreshing, with the cucumber being particularly special as it is topped with miso, giving it a salty and savory flavor. The salad includes ingredients like crab roe, crab sticks, corn, and tomatoes, all dressed in a tangy vinegar sauce, making it very appetizing.
Four Types of Sashimi
The sashimi platter includes four types: two slices each of toro, yellowtail, and salmon, and four sweet shrimp. The sashimi is very fresh and thickly sliced, making it very satisfying to eat. The toro is especially fatty and delicious, and the sweet shrimp are also very fresh and sweet.
Sushi Platter
The sushi platter includes one piece each of Japanese sea urchin, golden eye snapper, red snapper, scallop, lean tuna, and deep-sea fish, as well as six pieces of toro rolls. The sea urchin is fresh and creamy. The golden eye snapper is seared, giving it a unique flavor. The scallop is tender and bouncy. The sushi rice is also special, made with red vinegar, giving it a brown color.
After the cold dishes, we moved on to the hot dishes, starting with two types of snacks.
Grilled Angus Beef Skewers with Bandit Sauce
The beef is very flavorful and slightly spicy, making it very appetizing.
Karaage Satsuma Chicken Wings
The chicken wings are fried to a golden crisp but are not greasy at all, and the meat remains very tender.
Hiroshima Oyster Miso Hot Pot
The main dish is a hot pot with large, tender, and plump Hiroshima oysters, served in a miso broth with napa cabbage, tofu, mushrooms, and other vegetables, making it very comforting.
Black Curry Soup with Pork Cartilage and Inaniwa Udon
The black curry is paired with tender pork cartilage and chewy Inaniwa udon, creating a rich and flavorful dish.
Dessert
For dessert, we had mochi ice cream.
