Apsley House was built in 1771–1778 for Lord Apsley. Opposite Apsley House rise the Wellington arch and the equestrian statue of the Duke of Wellington I, during which the residence acquired its current appearance in the regency style: an empire-style pediment decorated with Bath limestone was added to the building, an art gallery appeared. It was based on canvases captured by the duke in the camp of Napoleon. The collection includes paintings by Velazquez, Rubens, Lorrain, Correggio and Goya.
