Catch the bullet train out of Tokyo and head towards Akita but stop off at Kakunodate to experience a truly well preserved Samurai village.
The Aoyagi museum is the largest and most accessible house and offers information in both Japanese and English.
The area is peaceful and urban after the bustle of Tokyo.
