The predecessor of the 228 Memorial Hall was the "New Park" built in 1908. In 1996, in order to commemorate the February 28 Incident that broke out in 1947, the park was renamed the February 28 Peace Memorial Park, which is an important cultural landscape in Taipei.

For those who love nature, trees, flowers or green spaces in the middle of a big city, if you come to visit Taipei, try to stop by to see the trees and many kinds of birds. If you are lucky and come at the right time like us, you will see cherry trees blooming just in time 🌸🌸🌸 (late February 2023)
228 Peace Park is very easy to get to by taking the red line metro and getting off at NTU Hospital Station and taking Exit 4.
Or if you are staying near Ximending or Taipei Main Station, you can pin it and walk here. It takes about 15 minutes (1 kilometer).

Monuments in 228 Peace Memorial Park
Urgent Public Service Archway (Images 1-2): This archway was erected to honor Hong Tengyun, a wealthy philanthropist from the Qing Dynasty, who generously funded the construction of the Taipei Examination Hall. This allowed students from the northern region to take their exams locally instead of traveling to Tainan. The archway, originally built in 1888 on Hengyang Road, was a four-column, three-section structure. It was dismantled and relocated to the park in 1905 to widen the road.
Huang's Chastity and Filial Piety Archway (Images 3-5): This archway was erected to honor Huang, the wife of Wang Jialin from Mengjia, for her chastity and filial piety. Born in 1820 (25th year of Jiaqing), she passed away in 1893 (19th year of Guangxu) at the age of 74. Huang married Wang Jialin at the age of 16 and was widowed at 28. She later moved with her family from Quanzhou to Mengjia, where she spent the next 46 years caring for her in-laws and raising her husband's orphaned children, earning praise from the local community.
Remains of the Tianhou Temple's Pillar Bases and Foundation Stones (Images 6-7): Although the dismantled Tianhou Temple did not stand at its original site for long, it was once a grand and bustling place of worship. The site has a stele that records its history. The pillar bases and foundation stones (the bases beneath the columns that prevent direct contact between the wooden columns and the ground) have been preserved and are now used as seats under the trees, allowing visitors to imagine the temple's former glory.

Reflecting on history, feeling the power of peace.
This tranquil green space is not only a great place for citizens to relax but also a witness to history. The 228 Peace Memorial Park, with its profound historical background and cultural significance, attracts countless tourists and local residents. Standing in this shaded park, one can almost hear the echoes of that painful past, but more importantly, it symbolizes the value of peace and the hope for the future. The memorial facilities within the park are simple yet solemn, allowing people to remember the past while feeling the power of peace and hope. Whether it's the paths in the morning light or the tranquility at dusk, every inch of this land exudes deep contemplation and reflection, making it a place for quiet introspection.

There are walking trails and pavilions. There is also a small lake.
It is said to be a park commemorating the victims of the 2.28 Incident.
The park is large, but there are few visitors, so it is nice to look around.
I think more people will visit if the weather is good.
