A unique example of a church in the mountains of Cádiz
Andalusia Tour ~ Cadiz (Region)
The Archbishopric of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, located in the center of the town of Olvera, is a unique example of the mountainous region of Cadiz due to its shape and size.
Built on the foundations of a former Gothic-Mudéjar church, the church retains its apse and, together with the ancient Moorish castle, is one of the two symbols of the town of Olvera. The adjacent observation deck offers unique views of the church.
It is a neoclassical church composed of three naves, the central one being the largest, overlapping the three parts of the sanctuary. At its feet it has a massive three-part facade, rising to a fourth section - each with an octagonal shrine with an arch, surmounted by a plain lantern - with twin towers on either side of the doorway.
The interior of the church features barrel vaults and domes over the transept lanterns, and the use of gorgeous Italian marble on the altar and columns is striking.
