Ohio travel guide and discussion

#bucketlistdestinations Old Man’s Cave in Hocking Hills State Park is Ohio’s most famous hike— a 1-mile loop through a mossy gorge with waterfalls, caves, and sandstone cliffs. Entrance is free (no day-use fee), and the trailhead has a large parking lot (free, but fills by 8 am on weekends). The trail is rocky, with some steep sections and a few stairs—I wore hiking boots and watched my step on the mossy rocks. I carried 1 liter of water; there’s a water fountain at the visitor center, but not on the trail. A park ranger told me the cave is named after a hermit who lived there in the 1800s—“the moss was his carpet.” Kindness beat: a park volunteer gave me a free “Hocking Hills Explorer” booklet and told me to visit the “Devil’s Bathtub” (a nearby natural pool) early in the morning—“the moss is magical when the sun hits it.” My take: Old Man’s Cave is a reminder that “magic” can be found in your own backyard. The moss on the rocks is a sign that the forest is alive, even in a state park with millions of visitors. Should we prioritize “accessibility” in state parks, or keep some trails rugged and undeveloped?

I’m heading out on my yearly solo road trip, this time from Tennessee up the East Coast to Maine. Where should I stop, and what should I listen to? Every year, I get to see amazing places and people along the way. It helps me connect with myself and with many wonderful people around the country. If you’re in Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, or anywhere in New England, what are your favorite places?

Please is a lovely little cafe bar and restaurant that serves up creative and delicious food. While the menu always excites, their style also hits the spot. Experience The Ohio State University

America has Nashville and Memphis. But at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers lies a town that has woven its history into art. Paducah is a small settlement of brick storefronts, a floodwall covered in murals, and a landscape of rivers and green hills. It is a UNESCO Creative City. Here is how to explore this hidden American gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Riverfront at Dawn: Water and Silence Paducah's riverfront sits where the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers meet, its waters calm in the early morning. By 10 AM, the riverboats arrive. Come at 6 AM instead. The water is glass. The light is soft. You will walk along the floodwall with only the sound of gulls and the lapping of waves. It feels like standing at the meeting point of two great rivers. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Paducah. It shows you the quietest routes along the riverfront and the hidden viewpoints. The best photos are from the floodwall at sunrise, when the murals glow. 2. The Floodwall Murals: A Story of History Paducah's floodwall is covered in a series of murals that tell the story of the town's history, from Native American settlements to the steamboat era. The murals are beautiful. The stories are fascinating. Come early. The wall is quiet, and the light is soft. Money Hack: The murals are free to view. Skip the expensive guided tours. Walk the length of the wall and read the plaques. Check Trip.com for a "Paducah Mural Walk" that includes the floodwall and the historic district. 3. The Quilt Museum: A UNESCO Creative City Paducah is home to the National Quilt Museum, one of the most important quilt museums in the world. The exhibits are stunning. The craftsmanship is extraordinary. The museum is a testament to the town's creative spirit. Come early. The museum is quiet, and the quilts glow. Budget Advice: The museum has a small entrance fee. Buy a combined ticket on Trip.com that includes the Quilt Museum and the River Discovery Center. You save about 20%. The ticket is valid for the whole day. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Rivers Paducah's food is a blend of Southern and Midwestern traditions. Try Burgoo — a hearty stew of meats and vegetables, a Kentucky classic. Order Hot Brown — an open-faced turkey sandwich with bacon and cheese sauce. And do not miss Derby Pie — a chocolate and walnut pie, a Kentucky favorite. Where to Eat: Skip the expensive restaurants on the riverfront. Walk into the side streets and find Café Paducah or Restoran Ohio, where locals eat. The food is authentic, and the prices are fair. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a free dessert when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the historic district. Look for something near the riverfront or the quilt museum. You will sleep in a brick room with a view of the river, the sound of riverboats at dawn, and the scent of fresh bread. The evenings are quiet, and the stars are bright. Conclusion: Paducah is not a place you rush through. It is a place you breathe in. It is a town of rivers and quilts, of murals and music. It is a place where creativity flows like the water. America is a country of many stories, and Paducah is its artistic soul. Come and walk the riverfront at dawn. The rivers are waiting. #trip_com #USA #Paducah #paducahtravel #USAHiddenGems #Kentucky #QuiltMuseum #BudgetTravel #AmericasGuide#FloodwallMurals #OhioRiver #HiddenUSA #UNESCOCreativeCity #RiverTown #trip_com

Squire Boo e Caverns were beautiful. View of Ohio River was spectacular

Eighty years ago, a young girl in a small Ohio town had a painting of Venice, Italy, hanging on her bedroom wall. She would often stare at it and dream of visiting this place with strange-looking boats and canals instead of streets with cars. She never thought she would really get there. Today, that dream came true. My mother finally made it to Venice.

#easytravelpost Conkle's Hollow State Nature Preserve in Hocking Hills is Ohio's deepest gorge, and the Rim Trail (1.5 mi one way, moderate-difficult) wraps the cliff edge through a mossy hemlock forest that feels like the Smokies dropped into the Buckeye State. I drove from Columbus (1 hr via US-33), parked at the Conkle's Hollow lot (free, no fee—Ohio State Nature Preserves are $0 day-use), and hiked the Rim Trail counter-clockwise from the south end. The mossy section: the entire rim is under a hemlock canopy with a north-facing cliff wall that stays cool and wet—sphagnum, fern, and clubmoss on Black Hand sandstone, and in August a carpet of partridgeberry under the hemlocks. I wore trail-runners with good grip; the rim path is rocky with exposed roots, poles helpful for the steep stair sections at the north end. Ohio DNR rule: stay on trail, no rock climbing, no drones, no off-trail hiking (fines up to $500 for damaging the moss). Mistake: I went on a Saturday in October—parking lot full by 10 a.m., ranger turning cars away. Go weekday at 8 a.m. Second mistake: I brought my dog—Conkle's Hollow is one of the few Ohio preserves that allows leashed dogs, but the rim stairs are steep and the rock is slick; my dog slipped twice. Next time I'd leave the dog home or do the Gorge Trail (paved, 0.5 mi) instead. Buy in Logan: a $5 homemade apple fritter at the Hocking Hills Market, not the $8 "trail mix" at the Old Man's Cave gift shop. Gear: $12 microspikes from the Columbus REI outlet—the rim ice in winter is treacherous but the moss is magical under snow. Best hour: 8:30 a.m. on the south rim, sun hitting the hemlock tops but the gorge floor still in shadow, moss glowing green on the cliff face. No crowd, just the sound of the creek 150 ft below. Discussion: Conkle's Hollow is free but the trail is eroding from foot traffic—should Ohio charge a $5 day-use fee to fund a boardwalk on the rim, or keep it free and rope off damaged sections? I'd charge $3 and boardwalk the worst 0.3 mi. Would you pay to protect the moss?

In December 2025, we returned to Paris and spent several nights at this charming Left Bank hotel. It was likely our seventh visit, and we had booked a Superior Double room overlooking the courtyard at the back of the building. Of all the rooms we had stayed in at the Hotel du Levant, our December room stood out for features we particularly liked, including a walk-in shower in the bathroom. When we planned a return trip to Paris in May and June, we contacted the hotel in February to request the same favorite room. Unfortunately, it was only available for a couple of nights during our stay. Although disappointed, our affection for this hotel led us to book the room for the two available nights and select another Superior Double room for the remainder of our stay. I later received an email from Mlle. Kaouther, a member of the reception staff, who promised to do her best to accommodate us in our preferred room if there were cancellations or changes. Her kindness highlighted the exceptional guest care this hotel offers. By March, thanks to Mlle. Kaouther, we learned we would have the room for our entire stay! Our gratitude to her and Monsieur Léo is immense for making this possible. The Hotel du Levant continues to impress with quality rooms, a quintessential French atmosphere, and a prime location near the St.-Michel Métro station, providing easy access to RER trains to and from Charles-de-Gaulle airport. Just steps from the lobby, you'll find a vibrant street with restaurants, bars, and a convenient grocery store a minute away at 52 rue de la Harpe. Returning guests will appreciate the newly redesigned breakfast room, featuring Art Deco stained-glass ceiling panels and expanded seating, with some tables offering street views. The breakfast buffet is superb, offering fresh buttery croissants, cheeses, meats, fruit juices, yogurts, and strong coffee to start your day. The 24/7 reception staff, friendly and welcoming, always recognizes us when we return. Once again, many thanks to Mlle. Kaouther and Monsieur Léo for ensuring we could stay in what we consider Paris’s best hotel room. — William McLoughlin, Columbus, Ohio, USA

I live in Ohio, USA, and sturgeon fishing has been on my bucket list for years. During a visit to family in BC, we booked a charter trip. Kolby came highly recommended by a local friend who had used his service multiple times. Kolby is a true professional—he made booking effortless, provided water and ice for guests on the boat, and knew exactly where to find the fish! The boat was very clean and comfortable. Over our 6-hour trip, we caught three sturgeon. My arm was exhausted after the first one! I couldn’t be happier with the trip and experience. Another check on the bucket list! Next time I’m in BC, I’ll definitely book again. Thank you, Kolby—you’re a true master of your trade.

Notes About timing and tickets: The itinerary is recommended from Wednesday to Sunday to align with the opening hours of the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Museum Center, and Contemporary Arts Center. The schedule is precisely arranged according to the operating hours of major venues, placing outdoor spots like the riverfront park in the morning and ensuring smooth visits to major venues before closing. Visiting the Cincinnati Art Museum on Thursday offers extended evening hours for a more relaxed viewing experience. The museum center is less crowded on weekdays, providing a more comfortable visit. About venue reservations: The Cincinnati Art Museum and Contemporary Arts Center offer free admission to permanent exhibitions, but early booking is recommended for special exhibitions. The Cincinnati Museum Center tends to be crowded on weekends, so purchasing electronic tickets online in advance is advised to save waiting time. About transportation: Fountain Square, the Contemporary Arts Center, and the riverfront park in downtown are all within walking distance, making transportation very efficient. Eden Park and the Museum Center are farther out, and the itinerary includes an extra 10–15 minutes buffer for transportation and waiting during long trips. It is recommended to use navigation apps to check real-time city traffic and ride-hailing wait times during your trip. About sun protection and heat relief: Summers here are hot and humid with strong afternoon UV rays. The itinerary schedules outdoor walks and park visits in the cooler morning or evening hours, but high-SPF sunscreen and frequent hydration are still necessary during afternoon outdoor walks to prevent heatstroke and dehydration. Sudden afternoon thunderstorms are common near the river, so carry a portable rain gear in your bag.

The Strathmore hotel is a stunning gem in the heart of Kensington. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, providing service that was warm, professional, and prompt. A heartfelt thank you to the manager, Gyöngyvér, who surprised us with a lovely swan towel sculpture on our bed for our 26th wedding anniversary. The full English breakfast, as well as the dinner of fish and chips and the delightful squash soup, were wonderful. As an early riser, I also appreciated enjoying a cappuccino in the lounge before breakfast. Thank you for such a remarkable experience! Gabriella and Michael from Cleveland, Ohio

My husband and I visited Las Vegas on a Caesar's Junket in April 2026, flying Sun Country Airlines from Cincinnati, Ohio. We stayed at the Horseshoe as part of the package. The flight was punctual and even arrived a bit early, which is typical of Sun Country. We were excited to have seats in Row 8, the closest we've ever been to the front of the plane. The Horseshoe was a pleasant place to stay, centrally located on the Strip. It had clean, quiet rooms with a view of the Sphere and the High Roller. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of champagne, a goody bag including a magnet, keychain, and a snack—a delightful surprise and a very thoughtful touch. It had been three years since our last Vegas trip, and the city was bustling, contrary to what you might hear or read. Some nights, it was even challenging to find an available machine. Dining options were mostly limited to the lower level, and unfortunately, none of them accepted Caesar's rewards points, which was disappointing. On the bright side, you can walk directly to the Paris Casino from inside the Horseshoe, making the location extremely convenient. Time flew by, and although we had no luck at the casinos, the trip was a blast. Considering the price we paid, it was well worth it!
