If you aren’t up for hiking, you can take bus tours or rent a car to make your own itinerary in order to minimize the amount you hike. Many people come to Cappadocia to see the sunrise from a hot air balloon. If you are one of them, then this information is for you. You can order such a trip at any hotel where you are staying. The balloons usually take off around 5:00 – 5:30 a.m. That’s why you get up early, get to the location to watch them, and then you wait. Remember it is cold even in June in the morning, so make sure to take layers! You will wait and wait and wait... and watch the balloons blow and then fly away. However, they don’t take off until closer to 6:00 or 6:15 am. If they don’t take off right away, don’t give up on them! It’s worth the wait and the early morning. During my time in Cappadocia, I decided to explore Kızılçukur Vadisi, also known as Red Valley — and I’m so glad I did. I arrived around 3 p.m., and while most people talk about this place at sunset, I actually loved the peaceful atmosphere of the afternoon. The valley was calm, warm, and glowing softly in the sun, with very few tourists around. As I walked along the dusty trails, I was completely surrounded by red and rose-colored cliffs shaped by centuries of wind and rain. The rock formations felt almost otherworldly — smooth, curved, and full of hidden textures. Some of the cliffs looked like frozen waves. One of the most fascinating parts of the hike was discovering small cave churches carved directly into the rock. Some of them date back to the 9th or 10th century. Stepping inside, I could still see traces of ancient frescoes on the walls. It was quiet and cool inside, and I had the space all to myself — a rare and special moment to feel the history of this place. I followed a dusty path between cave houses, thinking I’d just stretch my legs… but instead, I stumbled onto one of the most beautiful spots I’ve ever seen. It was a small hill — no signs, no crowds — just a wide-open view over Göreme. The sun was just starting to set, painting the sky in orange and pink, and the fairy chimneys below seemed to glow in the warm light. I sat there in silence as the day slowly gave way to night, the town lighting up one golden window at a time. It felt like Cappadocia was whispering, not performing. And I was lucky enough to be there for it. After the sun disappeared behind the cliffs, I wandered back into town — relaxed, a little dusty, and starving.
