In our experience, Yala was also where we saw the highest number of peacocks during any safari; they seemed to appear almost everywhere throughout the park. Time passes quickly, and before you realize it, the four-hour safari comes to an end. Spotting a leopard requires exceptional luck — we weren’t that fortunate — but we did get to watch a sloth bear running and playing, which was equally exciting. We opted for the half-day safari, and it was absolutely worth every cent. The experience was memorable, well-organized, and a highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka.

Going to Sri Lanka to see wildlife is simply amazing! This place is like a little Africa in Asia, with elephants, leopards, and crocodiles everywhere, and no crowds. Here’s a summary of the highlights from my trip 👇 🏞️ Must-visit attractions 📍 Yala National Park The best place in the Eastern Hemisphere to see leopards! We set off for a safari at 4 AM and saw 7 leopards, plus a herd of elephants bathing by the river. I recommend staying at a tent hotel near the park for a full experience! 📍 Sigiriya Rock Fortress An aerial palace built on a 200-meter-high giant rock; climbing it made my legs weak. I suggest going at 6 AM, or else the heat will make you question life. 📍 Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic A pilgrimage site for Buddhists, with people offering flowers daily. There’s a Buddha offering ceremony at 6:30 PM, so it’s best to secure a spot early! 📍 Mirissa Beach Perfect for lying in the sun, and from December to April you can go out to sea to see blue whales. 🚌 Transportation tips • Uber or Pickme rides within the city are super cheap • For intercity travel, take the train (the seaside train is a must-try!) or hire a car • When going to Yala Park, be sure to hire a local guide, or you won’t see anything 🍛 Food recommendations ✔️ Kottu (fried roti): a must-try street food, 15 rupees for a large portion ✔️ Hopper (bowl-shaped pancake): perfect with curry for breakfast ✔️ Coconut roti: freshly made at temple entrances, the best taste ✔️ Golden coconut: must drink two every day, less than 5 rupees each 🏡 Accommodation suggestions • Colombo: stay in the Fort area, convenient for shopping and dining • Kandy: choose a lake view room to enjoy the light show at night • Yala: tent hotels for a wild luxury experience • Mirissa: sea view rooms offer great value for money

As soon as I entered, I was immediately captivated by its ancient architecture and intricate carvings. The Buddha statues inside are very solemn, and the surroundings are perfect for meditation and reflection. What makes it even more special is that it houses relics of the Buddha, which gives you a deep sense of reverence. For visitors who love history and culture, this is definitely a must-visit spot.

#summervacay Yala National Park is where you go when you wanna feel like you're in The Lion King, but Sri Lanka edition. Hopped in a jeep at sunrise, coffee in hand, and off we went bumping through dusty roads with the wind in our faces and eyes peeled for anything that moved. The big excitement? Leopards. Everyone’s got their fingers crossed for a sighting, and when the guide suddenly slows down and points? Heart. Stops. We did spot one chilling in the distance like a jungle celebrity. Totally worth the wait. Besides leopards, you’ve got elephants, crocs, water buffalo, deer, peacocks strutting like models, it’s a full-on animal party. The landscape is wild too, open plains, forests, lagoons, even some beachy bits. It’s hot, dusty, and a little bumpy, but honestly? So fun. Pack some snacks, slap on sunscreen, and get ready for nature to show off. Yala’s got the wild energy that makes you feel like a real explorer. Would 100% do it again!

For the May Day holiday, I found myself back in Sri Lanka again—seriously hooked. 🤣 Over five nights, I stayed not only at Aman but also at the very niche local brand Uga, plus another Geoffrey Bawa-designed hotel, Cinnamon Bentota, which surprisingly didn't disappoint. After its 2019 renovation, it's got way more "spirit" now. - ⭐ Day 1: Arrived in the morning and headed straight to Bawa's Café. Though there's no AC, the designer cleverly used the interior structure and layout to let breezes flow through. You can enjoy afternoon tea here, as well as lunch and dinner. Later, checked into Cinnamon Bentota. ⭐ Day 2: Traveled from Bentota to Yala—my second visit, but the safari let me down this time. Didn’t see what I hoped for. 😔 ⭐ Day 3: Amanwella left a great impression, though it feels more suited for honeymooners. ⭐ Day 4: Aman Galle was absolutely my favorite. The creaky wooden floors in the corridors give such a vintage charm. At night, strolled around Galle Fort, sipping drinks and enjoying live music. ⭐ Day 5: Returned to Colombo in the afternoon for Chinese food at Dynasty Restaurant (didn’t take pics). Great spot for a taste of home—authentic flavors, run by Chinese owners. ⭐ Day 6: Wrapped up the trip. Sri Lanka offers endless ways to explore—no matter how you plan it, you can’t go wrong.
