Temple of Poseidon
Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon | Greece's most beautiful viewing platform, history and sunsets
The Temple of Poseidon dates back to the 5th century BC and has stood on Cape Sounion for over 2,500 years. It is a spiritual center of Greece and a great place to watch the most spectacular sunset in Greece.
The Temple of Poseidon stands on the cliff top of Cape Sounion and is the focal point of the skyline. Built in the 5th century BC, it was one of the most important religious sites in ancient Greece and a beacon for returning to Athens.
The Temple of Poseidon was built in 444 BC and completed in 440 BC. It was built during the reign of the Athenian politician Pericles, who also rebuilt the Parthenon in Athens. The building is nearly 60 meters (200 feet) above sea level and is stunningly beautiful. It was built on the ruins of an earlier temple dating back to the Archaic period.
Only part of the original columns remain today, but if intact, it would be very similar to the Hephaestus Temple below the Acropolis in Athens, which is contemporary and well-preserved, and may have been designed by the same architect. Although now lost, a huge bronze statue of Poseidon, possibly six meters, or twenty feet high, once stood in the Temple of Sounion.
Like all Greek temples, the Temple of Poseidon is rectangular in shape and has colonnades on all four sides. There were originally 36 columns, 15 of which still stand today.
Master Of The Sea
The Temple of Poseidon, located at Cape Sounion near Athens, is one of the most famous ancient sites in Greece, offering rich history, spectacular views, and cultural significance. Here are some tips to enhance your visit:
1. Visit at Sunset: The temple is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets. The sun setting over the Aegean Sea with the temple in the foreground makes for an unforgettable experience. Try to arrive a bit earlier to secure a good viewing spot.
2. Check the Opening Hours: The temple generally opens around 8 AM and closes around sunset, but hours can vary depending on the season. Check in advance to ensure you’re there at the right time.
3. Photography Tips: The Temple of Poseidon is a popular spot for photography. While the views are fantastic, be mindful of the crowds. A wide-angle lens or a drone (if permitted) can capture the grandeur of the temple and its surroundings.
4. Learn the History: The temple was dedicated to Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, and is known for its Doric columns. It was built in 444 BCE. There are informative plaques on-site, but reading up on the temple’s history beforehand will enhance your appreciation.
5. Bring Water and Snacks: The site can get hot, especially in the summer. Bring water and light snacks, as there aren’t many food options nearby.
6. Combine with a Trip to the Coast: If you have extra time, explore the nearby beaches or the charming coastal town of Lavrio. The area is rich in natural beauty, making it a great spot for a day trip.
7. Respect the Site: As a cultural and historical landmark, it’s important to be respectful of the ruins. Avoid climbing on the columns or touching the ancient stones.
Enjoy your visit to this stunning historical site!

Athens-Temple of Poseidon
Day 24 of road trip. Took a 1.5 hour drive to the Temple of Poseidon. The drive along the way was along a coastline which has excellent views of the sea and mountains. There are also several stops along the way built for cars to stop over for the paranomic view. Ticket is 5 euro per person and we were told it was half price (perhaps due to rainy day). The temple was built on a cliff side so the wind is super strong do hold on to your caps / wigs 😂. Definitely worth a visit !

Just got back from an incredible day trip to Cape Sounion, and it’s a must-see if you're visiting Athens! 🏛️ The Temple of Poseidon sits right on the edge of the cliff, with the Aegean Sea stretching endlessly below. The entrance fee is around 10 euros, but trust me, it’s worth every cent. Standing among the ancient ruins, especially at sunset, is nothing short of magical 🌅. The golden light hitting the columns while the waves crash below is something I’ll never forget.
There’s also a small beach nearby where I took a quick dip—it’s not too crowded, and the water is crystal clear. Afterward, I grabbed a coffee at a taverna with a sea view. It’s about an hour’s drive from Athens, and you can stop by the Lavrio port if you have time. Cape Sounion is perfect for history lovers and anyone who wants to experience a little slice of ancient Greece with stunning views.

I had an amazing time visiting the Archaeological Site of Sounion during my summer vacation! 🏛️ Located about an hour's drive from Athens, this site is home to the Temple of Poseidon, perched on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. The entrance fee is around €8, which is a small price to pay for such a breathtaking view and a deep dive into ancient history.
The temple itself is beautifully preserved, and the panoramic views of the sea from the site are absolutely stunning. It’s an ideal spot to watch the sunset, as the colors over the Aegean are simply magical. 🌅
After exploring the site, I enjoyed a meal at a nearby seaside taverna, savoring fresh seafood while soaking in the views. The surrounding area is also worth exploring, with its charming local shops and beautiful coastal scenery.
Overall, the Archaeological Site of Sounion is a must-visit for anyone interested in history and natural beauty. It offers a perfect blend of ancient wonder and spectacular vistas.

Temple of Poseidon, Athens
#Overseas travel
This is the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, which I visited while traveling in Athens, Greece!!
You can get there by bus from downtown Athens, and it's a 3-hour round trip, but it's worth a visit 😆
Leading Greece - Poseidon Chapter.
【Introduction】: Cape Sounion is located 70 kilometers south of Athens and is the starting point of the Aegean Sea.
The Temple of Poseidon, standing on the cliff, was built in 444 BC. At that time, sailors knew they were close to home when they saw the white stone columns from afar. Now, 16 Doric columns, the gate ruins, and the watchtower still survive. On a lower hill to the northeast, there is also a Temple of Athena built in the 6th century.
Gazing at the Aegean Sea from Sounion, one can fully appreciate what is meant by 'majestic and grand.' The poet Byron once wrote in 'Don Juan': Place me on the marble cliffs of Sounion / Only the waves and I remain / May heaven hear our hearts.
⛺【Travel Tips】: Worry-free car rental tour
🛬【Itinerary】: Throughout the year, according to the sunset time, arrive at the Temple of Poseidon 1 hour before sunset every day to enjoy the sunset scenery of the Aegean Sea in the afterglow of the setting sun.
🧡【Tips】: It is 80 kilometers from downtown Athens, a 1 hour and 20 minutes drive.
Temple of Poseidon at Sunset
Amazing experience! I booked an excursion to visit the Temple Of Poseidon at sunset! I was blown away by how magical watching the sunset was right from the temple!
There are quite long queues to get your ticket to enter but once you do there is lots of space for people to take their photographs with the sunset backdrop!
Last entry in spring is 7:15pm so ensure that you have your tickets at the ready before the but off time so that you don’t miss out!
There is a bar/restaurant and also a souvenir shop at the entrance to the temple.
I would 100% recommend visiting this attraction! If you can, at sunset!
